Denzel Bentley Vacates WBO Middleweight Title to Join Zuffa Boxing Days After Purse Bid

Days after Warriors Boxing won the purse bid for his mandatory defence against Yoenli Hernandez, Denzel Bentley signed with Zuffa Boxing and is giving up the WBO middleweight title he never defended.

Denzel Bentley held the WBO middleweight title for less than three months and never defended it. Days after a purse bid set up a mandatory defence against unbeaten Cuban Yoenli Hernandez, the London fighter signed a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing and is giving up the belt, The Ring and Fightmag reported this week.

A Purse Bid That Went Unanswered

The WBO had ordered Bentley (22-3-1, 18 KOs) to face his No. 1 contender, Hernandez (11-0, 9 KOs). With no agreement reached, the fight went to a purse bid, and Warriors Boxing won it with the minimum offer of $200,000. The Ring reported that nobody else bid. British Boxing News added that Bentley's long-time promoter, Queensberry, did not take part.

The reports disagree on some details. The Ring said the bid took place on Tuesday, 29 September, and that the money would be split 75-25 in the champion's favour, which would have meant $150,000 for Bentley and $50,000 for Hernandez. Fightmag put the bid on Monday and described the split as 80-20. Either way, the money was modest for a world title defence. The proposed dates were 12 or 19 December, with Phoenix, Orlando and Las Vegas named as possible venues.

The fight in America did not last long as a plan. Within days, The Ring and Fightmag both reported that Bentley had signed with Zuffa Boxing and would vacate the title.

From York Hall to a World Title

Bentley, 31, built most of his career on London's small-hall circuit. He turned professional in October 2017 with a first-round knockout at York Hall in Bethnal Green. He went on to win the British middleweight title three times and added the European title in December 2024 with a unanimous decision over Brad Pauls at Wembley Arena.

After 16 months out of the ring, he returned at The O2 in London on 4 April 2026 and stopped Endry Saavedra in the seventh round to win the interim WBO title. In July the WBO promoted him to full champion after Janibek Alimkhanuly gave up the belt. Alimkhanuly had beaten Bentley in Las Vegas in November 2022, and British Boxing News noted that this was the only time Bentley had boxed in America.

He was elevated without winning the full title in the ring, and now he leaves it without a single defence.

The McKenna Factor and a November Return

Before the purse bid, The Ring reported that Bentley wanted a unification fight with IBF champion Aaron McKenna rather than the mandatory against Hernandez. The magazine raised the possibility that he could drop the WBO belt and pursue the McKenna fight under the Zuffa banner. A few days later he signed with Zuffa, although no McKenna fight has been announced.

His first Zuffa appearance is set for 7 November, in the co-feature to the cruiserweight bout between former world champion Chris Billam-Smith and Cheavon Clarke. Fightmag reported that Bentley's opponent for that night has not been confirmed.

What Happens to the Vacant Belt

With the title vacant, Hernandez is still in line to fight for it. He last fought on 22 August in Las Vegas, where he beat Francisco Veron by majority decision. The WBO now has to find him an opponent from further down its rankings.

Tim Tszyu is ranked No. 2, but The Ring reported that he is negotiating with WBA champion Erislandy Lara, so a fight with Hernandez looks unlikely. That points to No. 3 Vito Mielnicki Jr., who beat Austin "Ammo" Williams clearly on 4 September. The WBO had not announced a pairing for the vacant title when these reports were published.

For Warriors Boxing, which won the right to stage a world title fight, the deal is effectively void. For Hernandez, it means another delay before his first world title shot, with the champion he was meant to face leaving to fight somewhere else.
