Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli Rebooked for October 31 in Riyadh
Canelo Alvarez will challenge unbeaten WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli on October 31 in Riyadh after their September date was postponed. It is Alvarez's first fight since losing to Terence Crawford in 2025.
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has a new date. The Mexican star will challenge unbeaten Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in Riyadh, after a September 12 booking fell through. It will be Alvarez's first fight in more than a year and Mbilli's first defence as full champion.
From September 12 to Halloween night
The fight was first set for September 12 in the Saudi capital. The Ring reported that a family matter kept Alvarez from starting his training camp on time, so the date was pushed back. In the last days of September, The Ring, SB Nation (via Yahoo Sports) and the WBC itself all confirmed the new date: October 31 in Riyadh, with the green-and-gold WBC belt on the line over 12 rounds.
The card is being billed as "Mexico vs. The World." According to The Ring, it will headline a Ring card on DAZN pay-per-view and will also be available to DAZN Ultimate subscribers. SB Nation named Kingdom Arena as the venue. Yardbarker's report on the Riyadh Season announcement named "The Venue" instead. The Ring and the WBC said only that the fight will be in Riyadh, so the arena has not been firmly settled in the reporting yet.
Mbilli's road to the green-and-gold belt

Mbilli is 31 and 29-0-1 with 24 knockouts. He was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, boxed for France at the 2016 Rio Olympics and turned professional in 2017. He now trains in Montreal. In August 2024 he beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko by unanimous decision. In June 2025 he won the interim WBC title by stopping Poland's Maciej Sulecki in the first round.
His only interim defence came in September 2025 against Guatemala's Lester Martinez, on the undercard of Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. It ended in a split draw. The Ring described it as a back-and-forth 10-round fight, and the WBC later named it the sanctioning body's 2025 Fight of the Year. Crawford retired in December. Wikipedia's record of the division says Mbilli was elevated to full WBC champion on January 27, 2026, and the WBC's own announcement puts the move in January.
Alvarez after Crawford

Alvarez is 36 and from Guadalajara, Jalisco. His record stands at 63-3-2 with 39 knockouts. The Ring notes that he has won world titles in four weight classes and has twice been undisputed champion at 168 pounds. The last of those reigns ended on the same Las Vegas night in September 2025, when Crawford beat him by unanimous decision. The WBC says Alvarez had elbow surgery in early 2026. On Halloween he will have been out of the ring for more than 13 months.
He brushed off talk of decline. "I have nothing to prove to anybody," Alvarez said, as quoted by SB Nation. He also said he still has more he wants to achieve in the sport.
Youth against experience
Mbilli has been just as open about what he sees in the matchup. He told reporters he thinks Alvarez's power has dropped compared with five years ago but that the Mexican is still dangerous. "I'm hungrier than him," Mbilli said, in remarks carried by SB Nation. In its announcement, the WBC framed the fight as Mbilli's pressure and punch volume against Alvarez's experience and ability to adjust during a fight.
The stakes are different for each man. A win would give Mbilli the biggest name on his record and settle any doubt about a title he picked up partly through Crawford's retirement. For Alvarez, it is a chance to win back a WBC belt he has held before and to show that the Crawford loss and the surgery have not ended his time at the top.
Open questions before fight week

With four weeks to go, much of the card was still unannounced. SB Nation said more "Mexico vs. The World" bouts were expected in the coming days. Yardbarker reported that Lindolfo Delgado and Rafael Espinoza had been linked to the undercard but had not yet received contracts. It also said that VADA had not been contacted about drug testing, and it pointed to U.S. State Department security warnings covering Saudi Arabia. None of the other outlets consulted for this report mentioned those points, so they are attributed to Yardbarker alone.
The title fight itself is not in doubt. The champion, the challenger and the WBC all have the same date: October 31 in Riyadh.
