WBC & SAUL ALVAREZ “FEAR” ERISLANDY LARA

July 2nd, 2012 By Pedro Fernandez

ERISLANDY LARA BEING ABUSED LIKE A $10 TRICK!

Erislandy Lara

San Francisco, CA- Some of you might be thinking, “has Pedro lured us in with a bold headline?” No, that is not the case. The abuse put forth by the World Boxing Council, AKA the World of Bunko & Chicanery, World Boxing Circus, or their latest nickname, We Be Crooks, on Cuban born Erislandy Lara has abused the premier 154 lb. fighter in the world emotionally, financially and professionally. Some background for those of you that don’t know, the WBC was sued a decade ago for almost $30 million by Graciano Rocchigiani, a light heavyweight from whom the WBC just took away his title and simply gave it to Roy Jones.

THE WBC HAVE NUMEROUS SETS OF RULES

Saul Alvarez

Right now the hottest fighter in Mexico is probably Saul Alvarez, a Mexican citizen who was handed the vacant WBC 154 lb. title after defeating Matthew Hatton, who had never in his life fought above 147 lbs. in a meaningful contest. Then after Hatton, we had the #1 contender (cough, cough) Ryan Rhodes, who was beaten by Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KOs) in June 2011. If this were Major League Baseball, putting Hatton, even more so than Rhodes in with Alvarez is akin to putting a near-last place Major League Baseball team, say the Oakland A’s in the World Series. Neither Hatton, nor Rhodes, in my opinion, were worthy of such opportunities.

CUBAN RISES TO THE #1 CONTENDER SLOT!

For the past six months or so, Erislandy Lara, the 17-1*-1, 11 KOs Cuban national was ranked #1 by the WBC, an organization headed by Mr. Jose Sulaiman. Boxing insiders and the real fan base are aware of the Cuban’s talents. This past Saturday, he pitched a near-shutout over tough as nails Freddy Hernandez (30-3). But that really wasn’t the big news regarding Lara last week. No, his demotion from that of mandatory (#1) contender to #3 was skipped over by most of the boxing media, as if they don’t have a press release to work from, it usually doesn’t get printed.

JUDGES WHO GAVE LARA ONLY LOSS ARE “NO MAS” (NO MORE)

You might recall that Lara’s only loss was to *Paul Williams (40-2), a fight in 2011 that Lara controlled from bell to bell. All three judges were suspended “indefinitely” by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board and haven’t worked a boxing match since. This was an historical precedent for I can never remember a State Commission dealing out such punishment and within a week. Still, after going through P.D.T.D. (Post Decision Traumatic Disorder) Lara would take nine months off before drilling Ronald Hearns (26-3) in the blink of an eye in April. That was followed up by his dismantlement of Hernandez this past Saturday.

HAS SULAIMAN LOST HIS MIND?

Jose Sulaiman

The ratings change that occurred recently now has at 1. Miguel Cotto, 2. James Kirkland, 3. Erislandy Lara. Cotto was drubbed on points over 12 rounds in May by Floyd Mayweather. Kirkland was KO’d in one round a couple of fights ago, and most recently turned down a fight with Alvarez for either more money or he had a shoulder injury. These ratings came out a fortnight ago, stripping Lara of the #1 slot for no apparent reason, except, in my opinion, Lara right now would lick Alvarez like a stamp and it seems like boxing’s power brokers concur.

WORLD OF BUNKO & CHICANERY FOR REAL!

First it was going to be James Kirkland, then they were expecting welterweight (147) Victor Ortiz to lay out undersized jr. welter (140) Josesito Lopez, but Lopez broke Victor’s jaw in two spots and that is apparently when the WBC changed their ratings, moving pay per view star Miguel Cotto into the top spot. Granted, that is a “super fight,” but Cotto just lost to Floyd decisively, was weight drained and drilled by Manny Pacquiao, the best guys he’s beat in recent times was a worn-out Antonio Margarito and a hapless then champion Yuri Foreman.

VICTOR ORTIZ WAS SUPPOSED TO THE LAMB FOR ALVAREZ IN SEPTEMBER

So with Kirkland on ice, Ortiz busted up, it appears the WBC decided to change the rankings in order to protect the Mexican “franchise” fighter Saul Alvarez. After watching Lara burn rubber right over Hernandez, I am even more convinced that Lara, 29, a former World amateur champion, would beat the stuffing of Alvarez. One Hall of Fame promoter recently told me what’s wrong with the boxing game is that promoters sign fighters and then to recoup their investments, they are put in “easy” or “showcase” fights. That same promoter has a piece of Alvarez, who at 21 is a good fighter with nice skills and reflexes, but he is no match right now for Lara.

WHERE IS LUIS DE CUBAS IN ALL OF THIS?

Luis De Cubas

Luis De Cubas is a Miami, FL based manager/promoter who has signed virtually every Cuban star that has defected from the land of Fidel Castro. Referred to by some as “The Cube,” what is he doing for Lara? Are they getting $500,000 to step aside and take the demotion in ratings, because if Lara isn’t getting paid big money for the ratings drop, then he should sue three entities, those being manager Luis De Cubas, Golden Boy Promotions, which have him under contract, and last but not least, the World of Bunko & Chicanery.

SOMEBODY IS SCREWING LARA HERE: IS IT ONE OR ALL THREE?

Having been around the block with these guys more than once, De Cubas and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, it is they that should be taking legal action against the WBC as they have a fiduciary obligation to represent and protect Lara’s status. If they don’t, Lara should go with Emanuel Steward, or somebody of that ilk to train him, and get a lawyer to go after De Cubas, Golden Boy and the WBC. In closing, Luis De Cubas is not a “silent” guy. His mouth can roar when he wants it to. Thus, the $1 million question has to be, why is he mute and at the same time not performing his fiduciary obligations to Erislandy Lara?

COMMENTS

  1. Lara should sue. What is being done to him is a travesty. Only way to clean up boxing is to hurt the powers that be financially. Lara is the best at 154 lbs.

  3. Just when you think Jose (I sully the ground I walk on) Sulaiman and the WBC (World of Bullspit and Corruption)cannot get any lower, they pull this crap and delve deeper into their own pile of crud. Incredible. And yes Pedro, where is Mr.DeCuba in all of this in not looking out for his charge? Sounds to me like this ‘CUBE’ may not be all that square. Peace.

  5. I never follow what the sanctioning bodies say, because I judge a boxer on what I see. I guess that the thing that really matters is the contender ranking status because of its direct bearing on matchups. Sneaky buggers!

  9. Aye Pedro i love boxing and ur articles are very stimulating. when i argue with co-workers and friends i jus simply post ur condo and opinions. What you speak and type keeps me a true fan of the sport for as long as i live. keep up da good work. plus i think pac and brad fight would and could of gone either way so a draw i think was my last decision as that opinion may silence most. GBP and TRP are jus as bad except GBP go out of their way to hide it moe so it seems and i believe journalist such as you and commentators such as teddy atlas can pave the way for a better tomorrow long live boxing. -Vito
