UFC 109 RESULTS FROM LAS VEGAS

February 8th, 2010 By Matthew Grizzle

COUTURE WINS BATTLE OF THE ANCIENT

Las Vegas, NV- Randy Couture, 205, Corvallis, OR SUB 2 Mark Coleman, 205, Columbus, OH. For a guy who is 46 years old, Couture (18-10, 7 KOs, 3 SUBs) showed he is still an accomplished striker. The former UFC light heavyweight (205 lbs) and heavyweight (over 205 lbs) Randy exhibited excellent traditional boxing and dirty boxing in the clinch. Coleman (16-10, 4 KOs, 8 SUBs) had no answer for Couture’s superior striking. After dazing Coleman in the second, Couture took him down and pounded on him until Coleman gave him his back which allowed “The Natural” to secure the choke which put his 45 year old opponent to sleep.

MILD UPSET IN SEMI MAIN EVENT

Chael Sonnen, 185, Portland OR UD 3 Nate Marquardt, 186, Aurora, CO. Sonnen (24-10-1, 7 KOs, 3 SUBs) pulled out another unexpected win in besting Marquardt (29-8-2, 7 KOs, 15 SUBs) by dominating throughout much of the fight. Sonnen, a relentless wrestler, utilized effective an ground and pound attack throughout the majority of the three-five minute rounds. Marquardt was able to bust up Sonnen in the second with an elbow and had a very tight guillotine choke hold in place in the third, but was unable to finish as Sonnen somehow willed his way out of the submission. Sonnen is now in line to face UFC middleweight (185 lbs) champion Anderson Silva in Dubai on April 17.

DRAWN SWICK GETS LICKED!

Paulo Thiago, 170, Brasilia, Brazil SUB 2 Mike Swick, 171, San Jose, CA. After a rather lackluster opening round that saw both men feeling each other out, Thiago (13-1, 2 KOs, 8 SUBs) was able to drop Swick (14-4, 7 KOs, 2 SUBs) with a counter left hook and follow up with a Brabo choke hold that put Swick to sleep. Thiago gains another impressive underdog victory while Swick drops his second in a row. I still think Swick should go back up to middleweight (185) as he looks very weak and drawn at welterweight (170).

Demian Maia, 186, Sao Paulo, Brazil UD 3 Dan Miller, 185, Sparta, NJ. Maia (12-1, 2 KOs, 8 SUBs) was able to take a rather lackluster decision over fellow submission fighter Miller (11-2, 1 KOs, 7 SUBs). The bout was stale throughout, but Maia was more active and was able to maintain better position on several occasions. This fight won’t win Maia many fans, but it will at least help erase the memory of his KO loss to Nate Marquardt in his previous fight.

TRIGG HAS NO FUTURE IN MMA

Matt Serra, 169, Long Island, NY TKO 1 Frank Trigg, 171, Rochester, NY. Serra (9-6, 2 KOs, 4 SUBs) was able to make quick work of the fading Trigg (19-8, 8 KOs, 6 SUBs). Serra was able to catch Trigg with a counter right sending him to the mat where Serra followed up with punches until referee Josh Rosenthal called a halt to the action. For the second fight in a row Trigg protests the stoppage better than he fights! Frank should go back to TNA pro wrestling.
