MMA is safer because the participants are lesser athletes and are just street fighters or wrestlers masquerading as athletes who claim to know how to fight when in reality they don't. Boxing should never take cues from a spectacle that allows and even encourages the likes of WWE wrestlers, bodybuilders, unproven internet bums, and street fighters to compete and even thrive after being marketed to the low brow end of the viewing public.

I think smaller gloves is a good idea...instead of guys getting beaten like drums round after round maybe these guys might get knocked out early. As sad as it may sound it is better to get knocked out than to take a pounding for 12 rounds in a fight you have no chance of winning. It would also add to the entertainment value. One of reasons MMA is safer than boxing is because these guys wear the smaller gloves and get knocked out early and don't take repeated blows. look at Ali. He had one of the best Chins of all time and now he's paying for it from all of those 15 rounders and the repeated blows he took by laying on the ropes and taking all those punches to the head. Shorter club fights? Doesn't sound so bad either...some of these guys have no business fighting 12 for some regional belt and many of them don't have the experience or stamina to go 12 rounds so what you get after 9 rounds many times is a hugging match...not very appealing and will not genetae new fans. Good article Lou. Just because you don't write about pac or Floyd every chance you get doesn't mean people don't enjoy your writing. Keep it up.

I wouldn't change the rules Because of what UFC is doing UFC is UFC. Smallers gloves no, Boxing is called Boxing not Knock out. Ko's is something that happends. Liking fights in Hockey or Dunks in Basketball. That's not what defines the sport.

You don't change to fit in. Boxing surived before fairweather fan and will survive without them.

The fact that boxing requires so much from an athlete is what makes it so appealing. Part of this appeal comes because a longer fight requires that an athlete try and remain focused while suffering from fatigue which adds to the drama especially when the fighters are evenly matched. This is a sport where it is understood that you will be pushed to compete for every possible minute of every possible round and when those rounds accumulate it is extremely exciting.

For those of you who are suggesting to sacrifice this and are willing to site the ufc, show that you are just like the ufc fans; low brow and looking for instant gratification. I for one would prefer for the days when championships were 15 rounds. I also agree that to many less significant fights are being scheduled for twelve rounds.

However, I can follow the sport and I understand that not every fight is between to exceptional fighters but these kinds of fights do occur on a regular basis in boxing and I'm willing to follow the careers of these greatest of athletes and enjoy twelve round fights because I a have taken the time to learn about and enjoy boxing. Again, for those who like to site ufc and think that boxing should follow there lead in certain areas just to appease those people out there who haven't taken the time to earn their entertainment but are just ignorant fans, I would rather boxing remain where it is rather than devolve into something likening the lowbrow ufc.

After all, boxing is not for everyone just like not everyone reads Dostoevsky. You wouldn't change Crime and Punishment just so it can appeal to those who prefer to read the National Enquirer.

I think that smaller gloves need to be used in boxing. This will make a significant decrease in head trauma because fighters won't be taking repeated blows to the head for 12 rounds. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all or most brain injuries from an accumulation of punches? Smaller gloves would also provide more KO's which would be fan friendly, and TV friendly (highlight reel KO's).

I never did like the 10 point "must" scoring system. Most of the points are not really used. How about a 5 point scoring system? 1 point to each fighter if the round is a draw (or the loser of the round), 2 points to the winner of the round, 3 points to the winner of the round if there's a knockdown, 4 points for 2 knockdowns, and 5 points for 3 knockdowns. This way all of the available points are utilized.

Bottom line on how to improve boxing on TV: more competitive fights.

Take care.
