MORRISON PASSING WAS A BLESSING!
San Francisco, CA- When news broke early today that Tommy Morrison, ex-WBO heavyweight champion and star of one of Sylvester Stalone’s “Rocky 5″ movie, had died, to me it was not as sad as it was tragic because Tommy probably did not have to die as he did in an Arkansas hospital at the age of 44.
TOMMY & “ACT UP” MINDSET ON HIV
While working in the San Francisco community in the late 1990s, there was a group of HIV patients running a cannabis dispensary. Like Tommy, the ACT Up people believed that HIV doesn’t cause AIDS and that the medicines before afforded those infected was nothing more than pharmaceutical poison. One by one, HIV+ staff members died and eventually the cooperative shut down.
MORRISON’S WBO WIN OVER FOREMAN HIS ZENITH!
Having had the opportunity to broadcast Morrison’s stoppage win in Kansas City over Razor Ruddock, his last big win, I spent time with Morrison during a pre-fight meet and greet where the late and dampened Bert “The Hat” Sugar stole the show. In a fight in which both men hit the deck, Morrison got a litle busted up.
DR. WORKED ON TOMMY WITH NEEDLE & THREAD
The last time I talked to Tommy was while he was laying on a hotel room bed getting his cut stitched up. Reached down, congratulated him and left. Never did I think that Tommy “The Duke” Morrison, a man whom some thought might be the first “billion dollar athlete,” would be out of boxing six months later and dead from Aids Related Condition (ARC) some 17 years later.
WHY WAS TOMMY’S PASSING A BLESSING?
Unless you’ve ever been with or known somebody who died from an Aids Related Condition, you know the dying process is lengthy and ugly. Having known people who have lived productive with HIV for 20+ years, this because theyu took the AIDS “cocktails” of medicines that have been available for yearts. Funeral services are pending.
