TOBY GIBSON LAST VEGAS REFEREE TO KILL SELF!
TOBY GIBSON THIRD SUICIDAL REFEREE
Las Vegas, NV– Toby Gibson, a veteran Nevada boxing referee was found dead on November 24, 2008 in the garage of his home in Las Vegas by his wife. And while nobody is saying just how the 61-year old Gibson met a self induced demise, being an ex-S.F. Policeman, garage suicides usually mean hanging or carbon monoxide from a car. This was sad to see yet another Vegas referee go the suicide route. First there was Richard Green in 1983 and most recently Mitch Halpern in August2000. Both Mitch and Green shot themselves in the head. Always quiet around me, muted would be a better definition as Green did not talk much. Having reffed Larry Holmes-Ali, Green never got over his involvement with the Ray Mancini-Deuk-Koo Kim fight less than a year prior to his death, a tragic event that ended Kim’s life.
GIBSON WAS VEGAS TRIPLE AAA GUY
Gibson has been refereeing fights in Nevada since 1985. He had been the third man in 45 fights in 2008 alone, his last being Matthew Hatton’s win over Ben Tackie Saturday at the MGM Grand a last weekend. The last big fight Toby worked was the Christian Mijares-Chatchai Sasakul 115 lb. title fight August 30 in Mexico.
CANNOT FORGET TOBY’S TIME WITH PEARL
Having known Toby for as long as hes been a Nevada ref, he never took things too seriously. When late referee Davey Pearl was on the downside health wise, it was Toby who spent a lot of time as Pearl worsened. Mr. Toby Gibson will be missed. One day I will write about how Mitch Halpern took me to school one night after a fight at Arizona Charlie’s Casino.
WAY I REMEMBER GIBSON, GREEN & HALPERN
Mitch Halpern, whose death was ruled an accident, was a deep dude. He wasn’t afraid to tell you (or me) where to go. Brilliant analysis of boxing is what I recall about Mitch. Richard Green whom I met just a few times, always seemed overly worried about sticking his foot in his mouth while talking. Toby was a nice humble guy that always gave it his all, a true team player who unlike Mitch, was never curt with me. Nevada lost something when Gibson and Halpern took the early ten count.
