A.B.C. WANTS FEDERAL PROBE OF AL HAYMON

AL HAYMON IN CROSSHAIRS OF “ESTABLISHMENT”

Al "Big Al" Haymon

Al “Big Al” Haymon

San Francisco, CA– It was announced today, as parts of Baltimore still smolder and the new US Attorney General Loretta Lynch doesn’t have enough on her plate, the Dept. of Justice has been asked by Assn. of Boxing Commissions President Tim Lueckenhoff to look into boxing’s premier powerbroker Al Haymon.

A.B.C. ADMITS AGENCY IMPOTENTCY?

Quoting from the letter, Lueckenhoff states, “The ABC has no resources or authority to investigate further or to take action with respect to this. However, we can and do request that there is “reasonable cause to believe” that PBC/Heymon “engaged in a violation of this chapter” [15 U.S.C. 6301 et. seq.] and that 15 U.S.C. 6309 gives express authority to the United States Attorney General’s Office to investigate and to take action. We ask that you do so.”

ABC SAYS HAYMON “FLAUNTING ALI ACT”

Leuckenhoff continues, “Haymon and related companies make no attempt to hide that they operate in the dual capacities of promoter and manager. It was the Vice President of Operations “Haymon Boxing” which sat on the dais and participated in the announcement of the PBC series on NBC. No other promoter was present. Frankly Haymon seems to be flouting this breach of the Firewall provision of the Muhammad Ali Act.”

HECTOR CAMACHO STORY PART 3

Hector Camacho-Oscar De La Hoya

LIFE & DEATH OF THE “MACHO MAN”

San Francisco, CA– Looking back at the career of Hector Camacho, you can see that he fought of a lot of fringe contenders. Guys like Freddie Roach, Sal Lopez, Pat Lawlor, names such as that make up the majority of Hector’s prizefighting resume.

TABLOID TV AND THE RAGS ALL OVER HECTOR

With more critics then Carter has pills, Camacho although admired for his skill, was also a favorite of tabloid news outlets. When Camacho showed up the post fight press conference, Hector was in a zone. And I don’t mean a drug zone. The kid from Spanish Harlem had just went 12 rounds without taking a serious punch from Jose Luis Ramirez, who had previously knocked out Puerto Rican rival Edwin Rosario.

MADISON SQUARE GARDEN HAD SPLIT HOUSE

It was fitting that the fight take place in the Mecca of boxing Madison Square Garden and in front of a nearly all Puerto Rican crowd that was split down the middle. The younger Puerto Ricans, many of those born here in the United States were for the “Macho Man.” Old-school Puerto Ricans and those living on the island were backing Rosario.

THE HECTOR CAMACHO STORY PART I

Hector “Macho” Camacho

“MACHO MAN” SHOT TO DEATH

San Francisco, CA– Having been hit with a number of deaths of people close to me in 2012, I all but shutdown when Emanuel Steward took the count as Cancer snatched him that October. Now it’s November 25, 2012 and Hector Camacho was declared dead after being shot a few days prior in his native Puerto Rico.

GOLDEN GLOVE WIN NOTED NATIONALLY

With this being a 3 part piece, we will get into the murder of Camacho later. Instead I’ll go into my own memories of the man I first named, “The Harlem Heckler,” a moniker Hector thought was ultra cool. My first glimpse was of Camacho the amateur as he won the New York Golden Gloves championship in impressive fashion. A pure boxer with fast hands and feet with an incredible gift for gab unseen since Muhammad Ali.

VOTE: WILL FLOYD-PAC BE GREAT?

FIGHT WEEK IS HERE!

How good will Floyd-Pac be?

Floyd-Pac A Classic?

Las Vegas, NV– It’s just five days away. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will finally meet. All the hoopla about ticket prices, Mayweather’s convictions of Domestic Violence, all this outside of the ring stuff is getting more attention than the event. For the exorbitant ticket prices and $100 dollar PPV, it can’t just be good, it needs to be great. So that begs the question you are asked to vote on. Read more

JOHNNY BOS DEATH TWO YEARS LATER

REMEMBERING NOT FORGOTTEN “ALL NIGHT” BOS

Johnny "Fashion Plate" Bos

Johnny “Fashion Plate” Bos

San Francisco, CA– It’s been three years since legendary insomniac (and matchmaker) Johnny Bos checked out of the hotel of life. A natural demise due to heart issues in his Florida home in May 2013, Bos, like Elvis, Madonna & Cher, rarely was he called anything but Bos.

BOS’ ABILITY TO KEEP SECRET ALMOST NILL

Shortly after his death I mused on how Bos might have faked his demise for he was the ultimate joker. The answer to that was also very clear. Unless it had anything to do with jail or taxes, Johnny Bos couldn’t keep a secret if his life depended on it.

Most people, at least since the advent of the Internet by email, social media, etc. But pre Internet, Bos had long distance bills that exceeded $4,000 a month. His diet for five straight years consisted of hamburgers and Cokes. That was it!

GONZALEZ-INOUE BEST FIGHT IN BOXING!

TWO BEST FLYS LIKELY AT YEARS END

Roman "El Chocolatito" Gonzalez

Roman “El Chocolatito” Gonzalez

Los Angeles, CA– Undefeated WBC world flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (41-0, 35 KOs) has flown under the radar of many boxing scribes.  The Nicaragua native has won belts at fly (112 lbs), light flyweight (108), and minimumweight (105).  You will find him on mythical pound-for-pound lists, but not on major networks in the United States.  The reason for this is partly nationality, but partly a general lack of interest in the lighter weight classes.  One opponent that should generate interest is rising Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue (8-0, 7 KOs).

INOUE ACCOMPLISHED A LOT IN BLINK OF EYE

In only his 4th pro fight, Inoue captured the Japanese light flyweight title.  After his 8th ring appearance, Inoue held both the WBC world light flyweight title and the WBO world super flyweight (115) title.  Inoue captured his title at 115 by demolishing the sturdy Omar Narvaez (43-2-2, 23 KOs) of Argentina, whose only loss going in was a lopsided decision to the then highly-regarded Nonito Donaire (33-3, 21 KOs) Read more

BACKLASH OF NO MAYWEATHER-PACQUIAO

FIGHTERS RUNNING OUT OF VIABLE OPTIONS

Las Vegas, NV– This horse has been beaten over and over in boxing’s niche media as well as in major media outlets. For someone not all that familiar with the Sweet Science, they would be led to believe that Floyd Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao  (57-5-2, 38 KOs) are the only two fighters of merit in the sport of boxing. Floyd will be 38 years old in three weeks, while Manny is 36. Both at the end of their careers, however both hold three of four major belts at 147 lbs. Mayweather carries the WBC and WBA diadems. Pacquiao is in posession of the WBO trinket.

Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. the scapegoat?

Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. the scapegoat?

The recognized World welterweight crown is at stake. The February 1st SuperBowl had a record number of viewers. The current “Over and Under” according to Bovada.lv for boxing’s Superbowl type of matchup is 3.15 million PPV buys which is equivalent to at least 150 million. Of the ten best welterweights rated at Boxrec.com, Mayweather and Pacquiao have fought four combined. The other four, Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter are viable, but they are not fighters that the general public is familiar with. Brook and Thurman already have fights scheduled in the coming months.

HBO AND SHOWTIME REALLY TO BLAME?

It appears that both camps want to make the fight, and a lot of blame is going around. People are quick to blame Floyd because as a person he is hard to like. He comes off as being arrogant or worse and has had trouble in and with the press. His reckless personal life has been on display for all on Twitter and Instagram as well as his legal matters. However people dislike Floyd and believe he has blinded them from trying to see what the real obstacle is here.

MUHAMMAD ALI DEATH REPORTS UNTRUE

REPORTS SAY CHAMP “UNRESPONSIVE” IN AM

Ali, Ray Robinson, Joe Louis

Ali, Ray Robinson, Joe Louis

San Francisco, CA– Walking through Chinatown today, the TVs in a store were displaying a montage of Muhammad Ali pictures on screen. Seeing Ali’s 73rd birthday is tomorrow, the TV coverage is expected. Standing in line at the Post Office with a copy of the I Am Ali movie being sent to friend Lenny Williams, a lady abruptly says, “You know Ali is dead. It’s on the news, he was unresponsive when they tried to wake him up.”

RICHARD PRYOR TOLD ME THAT ONCE

Flashback to 1981-82 and comedian Richard Pryor working the Circle Star Theater in nearby San Carlos. When I asked Richard about Ali he said, “Ali is dead. That *****’s dead.” Pryor was referring to Ali the fighter after Larry Holmes, while this female was talking about Muhammad Ali the person!

TERENCE CRAWFORD TOPS BIG FIGHT WEEK

Will Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KO) Elevate His Star Status?

Will Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KO) Elevate His Star Status?

“SIBERIAN ROCKY” KICKS IT OFF FRIDAY IN MOSCOW

Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KOs) will attempt to bounce back after losing his belt to recent Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) heavy bag Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KO).  Provo dropped a controversial Split Decision 12 to Algieri and lost his WBO light welterweight (140 lb.) belt in the process.  Luckily for the fan favorite who fights with his face a lot, Ruslan is matched extremely soft, as the ancient Stone Age creature known as Jose Luis Castillo (66-12-1, 57 KOs) will crawl into the ring yet again to face the Russian.

CASTILLO LONGER IN TOOTH THAN SABER-TOOTH TIGER

Castillo has been stopped 7 times in his pro career and I would bet on the 8th occurring on Friday night.  It is a perplexing fight for Ruslan to take, as he has absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose.  Still, fans of the hyper-aggressive Freddy Roach-trained brawler should tune in for the one-sided savagery that awaits in Moscow.

HEAVYWEIGHT REMATCH ACROSS THE POND

England’s Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KOs) will mix it up with his countryman Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KOs) for a second time.  Fury took Chisora’s 0 in their 2011 clash by winning a unanimous decision.  Since their initial meeting, Chisora is 6-3 with 4 KOs.  Fury is 7-0 with 6 KOs.  In Chisora’s defense, he has certainly fought the tougher opposition, but I expect Fury to again prove he is the better heavyweight (200+).

IBF TITLE AT STAKE IN HBO CO-MAIN

In Omaha, NE, Evgeny “The Mexican Russian” Gradovich (19-0, 9 KOs) will make the 5th defense of his IBF featherweight (126) title versus Jayson Velez (22-0, 16 KOs) of Puerto Rico as part of an HBO World Championship Boxing doubleheader.  Gradovich should keep his belt, as he has the much better resume and has proven his talent over the last few years.

PACQUAIO DOMINATES ALGIERI

AMERICAN FAILED TO WIN A ROUND

LAS VEGAS, NV– Undefeated Chris Algieri’s (20-1, 8 KOs) strategy backfired from the first round on versus WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs). Pacquaio, a multi-division champion, used feints and effective aggression to score six knockdowns, the most significant was a straight left in round 9. The Filipino star didn’t get the stoppage but won a one-sided 12 round decision.

UNSUCCESSFUL STRATEGY FROM THE YANKEE

pacman-mayweather

Pacquaio vs Mayweather 2015

Based on what Chris Algieri stated in the post fight interview, he was hoping to coast early and take it to Manny in the later rounds. Unfortunately with only 8 KOs on his ledger that outlook was ill-advised. The American appeared more intent on defense early in the fight, and as rounds went on he was in a hole on the scorecards. When he decided to open up after a clear deficit, thats when he began to get caught with punches. While some of the knockdowns weren’t severe, they scored. As the rounds pursued it was somewhat anti-climatic. Algieri possessed heart making to the final bell, but not much else.

BANGING THE DRUMS FOR FLOYD VS MANNY

So the real question here is will Floyd Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOS) and Manny Pacquaio finally engage in 2015? This bout is long overdue, but till this day there are obstacles to overcome. Read more
