HOWARD DAVIS JR. DEATH NOT SANS FIGHT

THE HOWARD DAVIS I REMEMBER

Howard Davis Jr.

Howard Davis Jr.

San Francisco, CA– When I learned that 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist Howard Davis passed a few days ago from Lung Cancer, I was relieved….for both Howard and his family. Suffice to say there are a lot of ways to check out of this Hotel we call Life. But dying of Lung disorders, I’ve witnessed many, it is a painfully, incredibly horrific way to die.

TALKED VIA FACEBOOK AS GENARO “FACTOR” LOOMED

We clicked a little back and forth since the diagnosis, but I couldn’t push myself to ask for any of his limited time to talk or do radio. This had a lot to do with my interviewing Genaro Hernandez 36 hours or so prior to his being KO’d by guess who, yeah Cancer. I was in tears as Genaro acknowledged death was imminent. Like Howard Davis, Genaro didn’t smoke or drink.

DEATH WAS GONNA BE QUICK

While it was clear that the Grim Reaper had reserved a room for the 56 year old as the Stage 4 Diagnosis meant weeks and then on his last legs just a fortnight ago, I just couldn’t push myself to contact Howard. And much like Genaro and SHO Box announcer Nick Charles, Howard fought Cancer like the greatest of champions, something I’m not so sure this writer is man enough to do.

SANDERS DID NOT “PASS TEST” IN TITLE WIN

Billy Joe Sanders

Billy Joe Sanders

Houston, TX– A fortnight ago, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight (160 lb.) title clash between champion Andy Lee and challenger Billy Joe Saunders made me realize how far our beloved sport has declined in quality over the past three decades. Saunders captured the WBO honors in a 12 round sleepwalk at the Manchester Arena in a contest that was “sub par” as far as major fights involving world class competition.

WBO TITLE FIGHT NOT ONE FOR “TIME CAPSULE”

The WBO has historically has recognized some outstanding champions including: Erik Morales, Wladimir Klitschko ,Marco Antonio Barrera, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and many others. And while I’m the first to realize that you can’t blame the sanctioning body. Still, this match was not one the WBO could call one of 2015’s best.

WEIGHTS, HONESTY, BOXING 2015, AL HAYMON

DECLINE IN PPV BOXING GOOD OR BAD?

Roy Jones Again KO'd Brutally

Roy Jones Again KO’d Brutally

San Francisco, CA– Throughout the decades of prizefighting since the the Marquess of Queensbury rules were applied, because of the various weight limits, boxing was obviously one of the fairest of competitions. But when the “house” fighter shows up 11 lbs., yes Omar Figueroa was 11 lbs. over at the weigh in for Antonio DeMarco, you knew this could only be boxing in Texas, where there really are no rules.

ALL THREE 2015 BOXING PPV BROADCASTS….SUCKED..

The three big Pay Per Vier offerings of the year were the anti-climactic Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao encounter, that Mayweather-Andre Berto yawn and the pedestrian Canelo Alvarez-Miguel Cotto match. There were no knockdowns, nobody got staggered, these 36 stanzas were so lacking that not one round could be used as a “Trailer” to entice people/boxing fans in the same manner movies are introduced.

“KEEPIN’ IT REAL” WITH HAYMON

In his first full year, Al Haymon has put PBC cards on NBC, CBS, ESPN, FOX, BOUNCE TV, TRU TV, el al, and never once asked the fan to pay cash money to view boxing. If you watched the Haymon productions thus far, you could see he’s trying to get boxing back on the minds and in the mouths of Americans queer to the game. But it appears that Al has instead of cultivating new backers, he’s brought boxing fans (who hadn’t watched boxing in years) BACK into the fold by giving them TV on Network and various Cable Networks.

GONNA SINGLE OUT PBC “MATCHMAKING”

There were only two upsets of note in But thus far, it has been “Quantity over Quality” and his matchmaking, that is Al’s most glaring deficiency. I’m not implying he’s matching his “A” guys vs. “B” guys, but whomever is making the matches can’t seem to make “exciting” fights. Most of the time the records are close and rarely does an A fighter meet C- or D class opposition. But the excitement, where is the excitement?

NBC HAS P.B.C. BOXING – ANTHONY JOSHUA IN UK

NBC CARD TOPPED BY OMAR FIGUEROA

Future Heavyweight King Anthony Joshua

Future Heavyweight King Anthony Joshua

San Francisco, CA– The stunning upset of Peter Quillin last Saturday by Danny Jacobs was “good” for both the boxing game and promoter Al Heyman’s Premier Boxing Champions. Boxing fans that have watched PBC evolve in 2015 on various Networks, Spike, ESPN, Fox, et al, have witnessed only two notable upsets. Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) turning out “trick” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and the aforementioned Quillin chillin’ by Mr. Jacobs.

LACK OF SUSPENSE & REAL FIGHTING DESIRED

Although I feel boxing is an entertaining, the “fight” and “suspense” in boxing is what folks want to see. That is hard to bring to play when the “favorites” are winning time and again and in less than Marvin Hagler-Tommy Hearns like form. If unbeaten jr. welterweight (140 lb.) Omar Figueroa wants to separate himself from the “pedestrian” performances of others, the Texan has a willing foe in Antonio DeMarco (31-5-1, 23 KOs) from South of The Border.

SAN ANTONIO IS A REAL FIGHT TOWN

Fighting at home in San Antonio, Figueroa (25-0-1, 18 KOs) a 25-year old with considerable skills with entertaining contests and will need to “smoke” former 135 lb. titleholder DeMarco like a New York blunt if he wants to get “over” big on TV. PBC needs a barnburner to get people to think about boxing over the holidays in expectation of PBC, et al boxing 2016. DeMarco, the 14-5 underdog looks a tad slower than Omar.

ARREOLA “LAST CHANCE” TO MAKE STATEMENT

Heavyweight “fringe” contender Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) of Southern California will meet once beaten Travis Kaufman (30-1, 22 KOs) of Reading, PN under Figueroa-DeMarco. Should the Mexican mauler fail, he will be a journeyman/name opponent from now on! PBC Boxing on NBC LIVE at 8:30 PM ET – 5:30 PM PT.

UFC 194 BETTER VALUE THAN FREE NBC BOXING?

TO PPV OR NOT THAT IS THE QUESTION?

(L-R) Opponents Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor staring each other down

(L-R) Opponents Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor staring each other down

San Francisco, CA– This Saturday’s UFC 194 is going straight up against free NBC boxing and Premier Boxing Champions presents champion Omar Figueroa on top. That being said, the UFC is putting forth their best two co-main events of the year, Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor & Chris Weidman-Luke Rockhold. Two unbeaten* champions and a pair of challengers that are not only coming to win, they have the ability to do so.

“SCARFACE” ALDO CURRENT BEST IN MMA

When it comes to Jose Aldo, the Brazilian is undefeated at 145 lbs. (MMA featherweight)
in 25 scraps. At 25-1, his lone loss was at ten lbs. heavier (155) at lightweight. The former WEC and reigning UFC champ is the ‘pound for pound’ best fighter in MMA period! That being said, Conor, the betting favorite is said to be Jo-say’s toughest foe in a decade of fighting.

CONOR BEATEN BY LESSER BUT BIGGER GUYS

His worthy adversary, the Irishman Conor McGregor has lost twice, both by submissions. But he has improved his game by becoming an even better Striker. His boxing skills and size, when you break it down, are his advantages here.

Holm KO 2 Rousey

San Francisco, CA– A day after Albuquerque, NM turned out in the thousands for hometown hero and UFC bantamweight (135 lb.) champ Holly Holm, honoring the native for her destruction of Ronda Rousey, the loser told ESPN Magazine that the kick “heard round” the world did a lot more than knock her unconscious.

ROUSEY MIGHT NEED MOST OF 2015 OFF!

“It might be three to six months before I can eat an apple, let alone take an impact,” Rousey said. If medical professionals are telling her it’ll be many months until her teeth are ready to bite hard into something, it might be that the air that we heard coming out of the Rousey balloon, (I maybe out on a limb here) but this looks to me like a balloon that cannot be re-inflated.

AFTER BEATING DEATH, HUMANS NOT THAT IMPOSING

Danny "KO" Jacobs

Danny “KO” Jacobs

San Francisco, CA– Although knocking out previously unbeaten Peter Quillin was quite an accomplishment, it only added to the real story that had Danny Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOS) not KO’d the champion of evil, Cancer, there would have been no Quillin fight!

CANCER KILLER LEFT “NO DOUBT” IN MY MIND

Jacobs, a product of Brownsville now residing in Brooklyn, needed just 85 seconds to take the 12-5 betting favorite out. And while some will “squawk” about the referee’s stoppage, you didn’t hear a peep from Quillin. Never ultra-impressive, I felt Peter (32-1-1, 23 KOs) was smothered with undeserved accolades since day one. Larry Merchant had a “problem” with him not attempting to make weight vs. Andy Lee (Draw 12) two fights back. “The real Kid Chocolate is rolling over,” said Larry.

LEE-SAUNDERS VICTOR & BLACKS DISS GOLOVKIN

Jacobs has indicated he will seek the winner of the December 19th Andy Lee-Billy Joe Sanders WBO 160 lb. tilt in Manchester, UK. Interestingly enough, I didn’t see Jacobs calling out the people’s champion Gennady Golovkin. An overwhelming majority of boxing fans think “GGG” is the man. Another tidbit of interest, Black fans, a good number of them they are not yet sold on Golovkin.

PETER QUILLIN-DANNY JACOBS NOTES AND ODDS

TV BOXING & “RING TALK” GUESTS THIS WEEKEND

Jacobs-Quillin "Black v. Black" in Black & White

Jacobs-Quillin “Black vs. Black” in Black & White

San Francisco, CAPremier Boxing Champions, also known as Al Haymon Boxing, presents the “Battle of Brooklyn” as middleweight (160 lb.) residents Peter Quillin and Danny Jacobs do battle in a “Loser Leaves Town” match emanating from the City’s Barclays Center. The real “drama” here that trumps any other promotion is that Jacobs is an unlikely participant seeing he was diagnosed with a deadly form of Bone Cancer in 2011.

CANCER SURVIVOR SEEN AS “EASY MARK?”

The 30-1 (27 KOs) Jacobs is a great story. As if the resumption of a boxing career after beating the “Big C” wasn’t enough, his going 8-0 over sometimes pedestrian opposition since the 2012 return put him in the crosshairs of the unbeaten Quillin (32-0-1, 26 KOs) who think Danny, holder of a WBA title belt is an “easy” mark, a speed bump on the way to greatness.

LEE “TOOK THE AIR” OUT OF QUILLIN’S TIRES

When last seen in “prime” time, Quillin flopped in a 12-round draw with Andy Lee, a WBO title fight where he failed to make (try?) the weight (160). Although some are overly impressed with Quillin, I’m not. And while others like Jacobs here, it’s hard to really like “either” guy a lot. While most rate Peter a notch better than Jacobs, Danny is really an unknown commodity. We will know a lot more come Sunday morning. Current betting odds favor Quillin 12-5. As for unbeaten Gennady Golovkin, don’t expect the winner to challenge “Triple G.”

KLITSCHKO WANTS M AY”REMATCH”

Wladimir Klitschko (63-4, 53 KOs) is not taking the loss of the World heavyweight championship to Tyson Fury (25-0, 17 KOs) well. And while going 12 and losing to Fury certainly didn’t have the “smack” that his prior three losses, all KOs before March 2004, losing the title, it hurts.

HARD HITTING BOXING NOTES LEAVE BRUISE

DID I EVER TELL YOU ABOUT THE TIME…

Don King

Don King

San Francisco, CA– Promoter Don King fell off a stage ten feet onto a concrete floor in Espana? I’ll finish with that story, but first….COTTO IGNORES HIMSELF TO FIGHT ON
154 & 160 lb. king Canelo Alvarez

154 & 160 lb. king Canelo Alvarez

Fresh off a 12 round spanking by Canelo Alvarez, multi-division champ Miguel Cotto is implying he’ll be boxing again in mid-2016. If you are related, or are a truly a fan of the classy Puerto Rican, this is not good news. When it comes to the residual damage from fighting, no one knows what you’ll be like in five or ten years. So like Global Warming, I prefer to side with caution and being financially set for two lifetime’s, Cotto should take another hard look at his lovely wife and kids.

“GGG’ TO GOAD COTTO IN YANKEE STADIUM?

While I do think there will be pressure on Canelo Alvarez to face Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in 2016, I think he will balk and that Cotto would likely instead face “GGG” in a sold out Yankee Stadium in 2016. Somehow Miguel detached himself from our conversation circa 2010 in Colombia, a chat in which he said, “family and health mean more than money.” NOT in 2015!

PACQUIAO GOING OUT AGAINST CRAWFORD

And while it is not “breaking news,” Manny Pacquiao’s swan song will be against Terence Crawford, the unbeaten Nebraska native and current WBO 140 lb. titleholder. This is probably NOT a fight Pacquiao can win. DID YOU ever think you’d see Manny Pacquiao being used as an “opponent?” Unless you’re dictating like recent retiree Joe Calzaghe or 50’s champ Rocky Marciano, the end is not so pretty.

MEN, YES MALE BOXERS NEED “STEP IT UP”

When you lace up gloves for money, pride or both, then you need to realize you are representing the entire sport each time you step into battle. Women, be it in boxing and MMA, they really prepare and fight their hearts out solely because they feel that as femVale fighters they have something to prove. (How many fat, outa’ shape chicks you see fighting?) Today’s male competitors should take note, as some are squandering opportunities at greatness and fortune by not going all out when the opportunity presents itself, especially seeing there is currently NO dearth of television exposure.

IMITATING FLOYD MAYWEATHER “NOT WISE”

Some fighters are thinking that seeing Floyd Mayweather can pitch a virtual “no-hitter” and make zillions, are under the impression they can as well. Mr. Mayweather is NOT THE RULE, he is THE EXCEPTION. If we had a dozen Floyd Mayweather type boxers dominating each division, boxing would need to be renamed “Gloved Fencing,” which is not nearly as entertaining as the art of true “Prize Fighting.”

TYSON FURY NEW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION

LONGEST WBO CHAMP IN HISTORY BEATEN BY FURY

Fury Bigger Than Klitschko

Fury Bigger Than Klitschko

San Francisco, CA– In one of the last major cards of the year, Tyson Fury (25-0) has taken the WBO and assorted title belts away from longtime World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. And while it cannot be confused with the Larry Holmes-Ken Norton fight of 1978 for intensity, like Holmes at the end of 15 rounds, one knew when the 12th round was over, Tyson Fury deserved to be the victor.

EXCUSES NOT NEEDED, YADA, YADA, YADA!

People will say being 39, the many injuries, the increased mileage on the Klitschko boxing odometer, that these all came home to roost on Wlad in one fight. That’s not the case. Wladimir Klitschko has for years gotten by because he was “the bigger” guy. The one time that is not the case and Wlad looks like an amateur who can’t pull the trigger or get proper range. The difference in size was just something Wlad had never had to face in “real time,” as physically imposing brother Vitali was never looking to behead Wlad in sparring.

FURY NOT LARRY HOLMES ON HIS FEET…BUT…

There were also cries of Fury being another Nikolai Valeuv, a lummox (I’m being kind) who at 7’1 and 300+ lbs. held a belt a decade ago. But Fury, whom I’ve interviewed on “Ring Talk,” while he’s not quite a category #4 lummox like Valeuv, nor is he Cassius Clay afoot. That being said, there was the near 6’10 Fury, an Irish born Gypsy Fury doing what he ever could to win the fight. Wladimir on the other hand found out one thing. Father Time eventually beats everybody and fighting bigger guys is NO FUN!

WEMBLEY STADIUM REMATCH IN MAY?

While there is a “rematch” clause that mandates Fury defend against Wladimir, but only should the money be right and Wlad want it. That being said, I always think guys should go out with as much pride and dignity as one can muster. Truth be told, Wladimir Klitschko is a credit to the human race. The younger of the Klitschko bros. resurrected his “drain circling” career when late trainer Emanuel Steward took him over in 2004 after his last loss to Lamon (Don’t call him Lamont) Brewster.

NEITHER KLITSCHKO EVER S*IT ON BOXING

Embarking on a 11 year unbeaten run that came to an end Saturday, Wlad has been a positive element of the not always positive fight game. In closing, we salute both Klitschko’s for their dedication to not only the game of boxing, but as classy human beings who have never brought any blight to boxing. An exceptional, if not ultra entertaining duo, historians have to give them their deserved accolades.

LATER IN THE WEEK..

We will explore Tyson Fury’s options, etc.
