DOES AMIR KHAN DESERVE FLOYD MAYWEATHER?

KHAN BEAT ALGIERI…AS EXPECTED

Air Khan

Amir Khan

Los Angeles, CA- Last Friday on SPIKE TV, English boxing star Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KO) scored a unanimous decision win over Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KO) in the main event of the latest installment of Premier Boxing Champions on.  The fans at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY and those watching at home witnessed a decent fight between these two welterweights (147 lb.).  Khan won a close but clear 115-113 decision on my card, but did not look overly impressive.  In fact, he did not look nearly as good as I expected him too against the determined but light-punching Algieri.

JOHN DAVID JACKSON MAKES ALGIERI BETTER

The credit for Algieri’s solid performance should at least partly go to John David Jackson (36-4, 20 KO), a former super welterweight (154) and middleweight (160) champion who also trains current light heavyweight titlist (175) Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KO).  Algieri did a decent job as a pressure fighter, and was able to land some solid blows on Khan. Considering it was their first fight together, Algieri’s performance was quite impressive.  It appears Algieri  will be a tough guy to look good against for anyone in the future.  Unfortunately for the New York native, the quick hands and combination punching of the Brit proved to be too much to overcome. BOB FOSTER THE BEST AT 175 LBS. “UNPLUGGED”

BOB FOSTER THE GREATEST LIGHT HEAVY PERIOD!
Bob-Foster
Canastota, NY– When it comes to rating the greats who have fought at light heavyweight, you cannot omit the name of former World champion Bob Foster. There are boxing fans and historians alike who say Bob Foster was the best 175-pounder of all time.

EPIC KNOCKOUTS OF TIGER & QUARRY

The highlight of the Foster reign, in my view, was his chilling one-punch knockout of Mike Quarry in 1972. There was an almost deadly hush as the prone Quarry lay lifeless for more than five minutes. Others say the zenith of the “Albuquerque Thin Man’s” career was the left hook that defanged Dick Tiger in May 1968 and capturing the world light heavyweight championship in the process.

COULD NOT BEAT THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT ERA

As a heavyweight, Foster proved too frail and failed to match the strength to match the behemoths like Ali, Frazier, etc., losing six times to bigger foes. Overall, Foster posted a log of 56-8, with 46 KOs including 14 title defenses with 11 challengers failing to go the 15-round distance. Standing close to 6’4 and wearing his age well, Foster still had the aura of a man brimming with self-confidence when I conducted this interview.

KELL BROOK TOPS WEEKEND BOXING RESULTS

BROOK TAKES GLAVIN OUT IN SIX

Brook Drills Glavin

Brook Drills Glavin

San Francisco, CA– It was a great weekend of boxing as Kell Brook, the IBF titleholder eliminated 16-1 underdog Frankie Glavin inside of six rounds. After mastering the once beaten Glavin through five, Brook landed a right hand near the end of the sixth round that was followed by two uppercuts, prompting the referee to halt the beat down and save Gavin from further punishment.

BROOK BEST WELTERWEIGHT IN 2015?

Not a lot to write about in Brook-Gavin, but should any other 147 lb. fighter want to “walk the walk” with Brook, it might be off a plank as he looks to be the best in the weight division that features none other than Floyd Mayweather.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN NOT IMINENT

Promoter Eddie Hearn said that the proposed “Battle of Britain,” Kell Brook vs. Amir Khan doesn’t look likely as Khan seems intent on milking the PPV cash cow that only a Mayweather bout would provide. Funny, even though Brook has the title and the unbeaten record, it seems to the Pakistani-Brit, Khan who is in the drivers seat here.

KHAN HAS “WORK” FIGHT ON SPIKE TV FRIDAY

Amir won a 12 round unanimous nod over the always “game” Chris Algieri on Spike TV for Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions on Friday in Brooklyn, NY. No drama here, just Khan pitching a lot and Algieri catching.

2015 MOST CRITICAL TIME IN BOXING HISTORY

CHANGE IS THE ENEMY OF “BOXING ESTABLISHMENT”

San Francisco, CAPremier Boxing Champions and their leader Al Haymon continue to change boxing as we’ve known it since the Mafia lost it’s stranglehold with the jailing of Blinky Palermo and Frankie Carbo in the 60s. Within a few years boxing went from Mob control to that of a former United States Attorney and Harvard grad in promoter Bob Arum.

SINCE 1965 ARUM #1, 2 OR 3!

Bob Arum and his Top Rank firm promoted epic events, too many to list. With no real competition until the promotional birth of Don King in 1974, Arum and King have both worked together, sued one another, even had a physical altercation at Ray Leonard-Marvin

Smug Face of Boxing Establishment Bob Arum

Face of Boxing Establishment Bob Arum

Hagler as I witnessed Bob deny Don access to the ring prior to the decision being announced.

AFTER 50 YEARS BOXING NEEDS “FACE LIFT”

Sans going into a screed on the pros and cons of Mr. Arum who has: 1) Admitted to Felonies, including Conspiracy, Bribery, Money Laundering. 2) Told Media, “Yesterday I was lying, today I’m telling the truth.” 3) In the biggest fight in history, co-promioter Arum was aware of the fact that an MRI taken a fortnight before Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao REVEALED that his guy Pacquiao had a “SEVERELY torn right rotator cuff muscle.” Suffice to say these actions are indicative of the need to change the smug face of the Boxing Establishment.

BOXING REBIRTH ON FREE TV THREATENED

“BOXING ESTABLISHMENT” PICKED YOUR POCKET

Al Haymon

Al Haymon

San Francisco, CA– The sport of boxing has been missing from the TV Guide of the American masses for almost a quarter century. While there are a plethora of reasons why boxing could not get on Network TV, the bottom line is the “Boxing Establishment,” which can easily be described as the games’s top 2% greatly flourished in a time when it’s audience was significantly shrinking.

NO NETWORK TV “INTENTIONAL” BY ARUM, ET AL?

Stop scratching your head and I’ll take you down the road of greed that kept the sport from Network TV and why people like promoters Bob Arum, Don King, et al, really didn’t care whether they had Network TV or not because they were pocketing millions on Pay Per View.

ARUM DIDN’T GET BOXING BACK ON FREE TV

Again, if you’re making hundreds of millions of dollars serving a minuscule percentage of the US population, why would Arum and company need to reach out to the masses? They didn’t need to and apparently didn’t want to put boxing on Network TV because “the boxing establishment” was getting fatter than the late Cedric Kushner in the 1980s sans any Network or free TV.

HAYMON & ARUM HAVE BITTER DIFFERENCES

Al Haymon and Bob Arum are Harvard graduates. That is where the comparisons stop. Haymon is a Black entrepreneur who made money promoting musical acts. Arum is a White ex-US Attorney General and admitted Felon who made his money in boxing and wedlock.

BOXER ERIC MARTIN TAKES ON SICILIAN MAFIA

ERIC MARTIN STORY FROM THE ARCHIVES!

Engels Pedroza-Carlos Padilla-Eric Martin

Engels Pedroza-Carlos Padilla-Eric Martin

South San Francisco, CA– While jogging weeks before his death, I literally ran into Eric “The Prince” Martin for the last time. Running through the streets of this little city, a community a few miles south of The City by The Bay, Eric turned the corner at Grand & Maple. He was leaving the Physique Magnifique boxing gym where he was the “House” trainer. We talked, nothing major, exchanged wishes and the next thing I know “The Prince” is dead.

“SUPER SIZE ME” DIET KILLED “THE PRINCE”

One of the worst eaters I ever knew, especially from an athletic point of view, Eric preferred McDonald’s hands down over a filet, and in the end that would lead to his death. A type 2 Diabetic, that and complications from a tooth extraction brought Eric’s life to an end December 23, 2007 at the age of 48.

CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF GREAT BOXER SANS CONNECTIONS

Uncrowned Champ Eric Martin

Uncrowned Champ Eric Martin

Eric’s record is less than impressive. At the same time, he fought seven world champions, none of whom could stop or drop the former San Francisco Police Dept. recruit who left the academy to fight professionally. On any given night, he could be and or beat the best “boxer” in the world. The problem with Eric was two-fold. 1. He was a great boxer who lacked the ability (punch or mean spirit) to finish guys. 2. That being said, Eric couldn’t sell tickets and his manager, the late Bill Mateo was about as straight as San Francisco’s Lombard St.

ERIC WAS PIMPED BY THEN MANAGER

Loyal to an ignorant fault, Martin wouldn’t listen to those of us that knew the game and cared, thus he stayed with Mateo and instantly became an underpaid opponent who would go anywhere and fight.

DIDN’T CRY WHEN BILL DIED

I mentioned Martin had fought seven guys who claimed world titles. Eric made the boxing world take note when he all but bi*ch slapped future World champ Lupe Aquino (22-1, 16 KOs) on the Larry Holmes-Marvis Frazier card in 1983, resulting in an absurd draw. Not impressive physically, but always in shape, Eric needed four rounds to make the “house” judges realize he was in the fight, let alone winning it! Mateo, who died in 2005 from a heart attack really had little regard for Eric, and like a guy in love with a crack addict, Martin put up with Mateo to a point where I might have wanted to end the manager’s role, if not his life.

UNSOLVED MURDER OF ARTURO GATTI 2015

MORAL OF STORY? DON’T MARRY “SKANK” STRIPPER

Arturo Gatti Death Scene

Arturo Gatti Death Scene

San Francisco, CA– When I presented evidence of a murder case against the then 23-year old ex-stripper that retired boxing legend Arturo Gatti married, Amanda Rodrigues Gatti, the case was about as solid, clear and simple as anyone could imagine in 2009.

WIFE LIED FROM THE START!

Amanda Gatti first claimed that somebody broke into the villa they were staying at near Recifee, Brazil. Then the hotel released the “electronic key” records to the hotel room that proved her to be a liar. Secondly, Gatti was dead at least 10-12 hours before any authorities were notified or called. I mean, this wasn’t TV’s The Addams Family mansion of 75 rooms, it was a hotel suite and incredibly Amanda said she was in the room with the dead Gatti and didn’t know it.

Can a 180 lb. man hang himself with this?

After a wild night of partying, drinking, and arguing, it was the opinion of this former San Francisco Policeman and Licensed Private Investigator, that Gatti did indeed die by way of the purse strap, but from what I pulled from Brazilian authorities and news agencies it looked to me that Arturo had NOT hung himself.

DIEGO CORRALES DEATH 8 YEARS LATER

Diego "Chico" Corrales

FROM THE “RING TALK” ARCHIVES”

San Francisco, CA– I always have a tough time associating the word anniversary with the loss of life, but it’s been eight years since an inebriated Diego Corrales was killed driving his motorcycle in Las Vegas in May 2007. Although he had a great mother, Olga who was always there when he would let her be, “Chico” as he was known to friends like a lot of people had great pluses and destructive minuses. When it came to boxing, a career that started outside of California, even though his family was then living in Sacramento, CA, Corrales was at one point #1 at 130 lbs. and was even in the top ten “pound for pound” lists of some pundits.

HAD HIGH IQ THAT FEW PUGILISTS POSSESS

Although alcohol precipitated his death, Diego was a complex guy who while realizing his boxing career was over, and that he had little money left to live on was very depressed on this day according to promoter Gary Shaw, which is eight turns of the Roman calendar ago, May 7, 2007. Involved in another marriage that was according to Shaw was failing, again his boxing days were over, even though he was only three months or so shy of his 30th birthday. Said to be a “mean drunk” when he got boozed up, there were Felony Domestic Violence charges that landed him a stint in a California Prison Work Farm in 2001.
