Cotto-Canelo

Cotto-Canelo

Las Vegas, NV– (HBO PPV) World linear middleweight (160 lb.) Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs) vs Saul Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) Catchweight @ 155 lbs. Odds/Prediction: Canelo 9-5. Favorite las LEAD feet. Unless he can pin Cotto on the ropes and keep him there, it’s a good fight, one that Cotto could win. That being said, “PASS” on pick.

Champion Takashi Miura (29-2-2, 22KOs) vs Francisco Vargas (22-0-1, 16KOs) (WBC 130 lb. title) Odds/Prediction: Vargas 13-5. Miura can fight, but they (promoters) aren’t bringing him to Vegas to win.

Champion Lee Haskins (32-3, 14KOs) vs Randy Caballero (22-0, 3KOs) (IBF 118 lb. title) Odds/Prediction: Randy 9-5. California kid (house fighter) poised to grab title from gritty Brit.

Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs) vs Drian Francisco (28-3-1, 22KOs) (122 lbs.) Odds/Prediction: Rigondeaux 3-1. Cuban National needs “work” fight to make 126 lb. clash with WBO 126 lb. guy Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1) in a clash of Olympic champions.

Lancashire, UKAnthony Crolla (29-4-3, 11KOs) vs Darleys Perez (32-1-1, 20KOs) (WBA 135 lb. title)

Niedersachsen, Germany– Champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29KOs) vs Martin Murray (31-2, 1D 14KOs) (WBO 168 lb. title) Odds/Prediction: AA 12-5. Murray is NO BUM and this is a toss up with AA getting home court advantage and size.

CAUSE OF BOXING NEAR DEATH NO NETWORK TV

“WAKE UP EVERYBODY NO MORE SLEEPIN’ IN BED”

Teddy Pendergrass Addresses "Boxing Establishment"

Teddy Pendergrass Addresses “Boxing Establishment”

San Francisco, CA“Wake up everybody no more sleepin’ in bed. No more backward thinkin’ time for thinkin’ ahead. The (boxing) world has changed so very much from what it used to be, but there’s still so much hatred, war an’ poverty.”

BEFORE NEAR MAINSTREAM DEATH OF BOXING

When the late Teddy Pendergrass laid those lyrics to vinyl in 1975, boxing was enjoying the last run of Muhammad Ali, fights were on Network TV (ABC, CBS, NBC) and even the most avid and diehard boxing fan might only pay once or twice a year to watch boxing via Closed Circuit TV on big screens in theaters and sports bars.

PPV MEANS TAX FREE MONEY FOR PROMOTERS

Then for some inexplicable reason, the “Boxing Establishment” seemingly allowed Network TV to get away. Why? As it turned out, the “Establishment” saw that with even small Pay Per View productions, there were piles of incoming cash and in this world, the boxing world, money seemingly trumps all. For example, a minuscule 20,000 PPV buys at $50 per means $1,000,000 for the promotion to split with the TV provider.

RAY LEONARD-TOMMY HEARNS I “FIRST” HOME PPV

By 1990, or nine years after Ray Leonard-Tommy Hearns topped the first ever residential Pay Per View, the “Boxing Establishment,” after having ridiculed the late PPV pioneer Dan Duva by saying, “PPV would kill the boxing business,” these same entities did a 180′ degree turn and have since made millions of shekels forcing sometimes multiple monthly PPV cards on fans.

TV KO STARTED MONTHLY MONEY THEFT FROM FIGHT FANS

Now 25 years after the incarnation of a then monthly Pay Per View series known as TV KO (now HBO PPV) kicked the series off I believe with middleweight king Michael Nunn being throttled by James Toney in what was more than a “mild” upset that went for $19.95. While this form of boxing marketing was profitable, little by little, the average sports fan lost “touch” (outa’ sight, outa’ mind) with boxing sans any free exposure on Network TV.

AL HAYMON BOXING IS “ELEPHANT” IN THE ROOM

Al Haymon

Al Haymon

Now in 2015 the “Boxing Establishment” watches as an “Elephant” that’s actually not in their room, is bringing boxing to various Networks, some major, some start ups. But having had eight TV dates in September on Network & non-paying Cable TV channels, how can this be construed as nothing but

WBO Prez Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel

a God send for both the fans and fighters?

HAYMON & WBO SHOULD TRY TO “WORK IT OUT”

The only transparent sanctioning body in boxing is the World Boxing Organization. Outgoing Assn. of Boxing Commissions chieftain Tim Lueckenhoff stated just that anytime the subject was broached. I think Premier Boxing Champions’ czar Al Haymon should realize such and recognize that he needs to surround himself with an organization led by a man with the stellar stature of Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel.

AT THE END OF THE DAY FIGHT FANS…

No Network TV Meant Zaillions for Bob Arum

No Network TV Meant Zillions for Bob Arum

The bottom line is the once brilliant minds that encompass the “Boxing Establishment,” milked fans dry for decades and in the minds of many are only getting their comeuppance. And instead of these multi-millionaires bitching and moaning about the “Elephant” Al Haymon squeezing them out, Bob Arum, et al, should instead take parts of the “Elephant” methodology and work equally hard to air their boxing on Network/Cable TV and not Pay Per View.

CAUSE OF BOXING NEAR DEATH NO NETWORK TV

BRONER-PORTER ON NBC SATURDAY NIGHT

PEACOCK NETWORK AIRS PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS
jkit82
San Francisco, CAAl Haymon and his Premier Boxing Champions have fueled a renaissance of boxing here in the United States, something the “Boxing Establishment” is aghast over. But at the end of the day, did any of the elite promoters, outside of Kathy Duva, try and place professional boxing back on Network TV? No, there were instead making zillions on PPV. Case closed, out with the old and in with the new and that means NBC boxing Saturday prime time with a five star main event.

GREAT MATCHUP LIVE NBC SATURDAY NIGHT

Adrien Broner ( 30-1, 22 KOs) of Cincinnati, OH is considered one of the game’s better technicians and was headed for a mega pay day with Floyd Mayweather before Marcos Maidana canceled his ticket by upsetting Broner. Standing across and looking to get a piece of Broner is also once beaten (25-1-1, 16 KOs) Sean Porter, who dropped his “0” and the IBF 147 lb. diadem to Kell Brook (34-0, 24 KOs) on points in 2014.

HAYMON MATCHES HIS GUYS VS. ONE ANOTHER

Both Broner and Porter are clients of advisor Al Haymon, the Harvard guy that put together $400 million with the sole intent of making boxing more mainstream, a feat he has accomplished by putting a number of cards on NBC, CBS, Tru TV, Spike TV and soon ESPN. Haymon purchases airtime from the networks and hopes to become chummy with the Nielsen ratings, and in time have networks and advertisers giving him airtime and advertising dollars.

BOLD MOVE TOOK BRAINS, GUTS AND $400 MILLION

Main Event’s Kathy Duva tried buying some NBC airtime years ago. Unfortunately her stable was a little light when it came to pugilistic thoroughbreds, thus she couldn’t make a go of it. Why the “Boxing Establishment” put a “Hit” out on “Big Al” and his Premier Boxing Champions in the form of the Assn. of Boxing Commissions asking the Justice Dept. to look under Big Al’s skirt.

BOXING ESTABLISHMENT MAD AS AL PAYS FIGHTERS MORE!

They claim that he is violation of the Muhammad Ali Act in that he is acting both as a promote and a manager, something the law that was watered down by Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, says this is not allowed. There must be two different parties in the roles of “promoter and manager.” Haymon says he is an advisor, and yet Premier Boxing Champions walks, talks and operates like a promoter. The ABC is asking the “G” to go along with their assertions and dismantle PBC for violating Federal law.

CONGRESS HEARING IS HAYMON’S “VICTORY” PARTY

When the ABC brings Haymon to trial or before Congress for a hearing, Al will have every fighter he’s got testify that they are making more money with Al, way more, than they could have elsewhere. Haymon can call Bob Arum of Top Rank as a “hostile” character witness and Arum will be asked, “Did you say that Haymon is paying his fighter’s ridiculous purses,” or something to that effect. Arum would squirm and twist, but eventually he’s have to say that he did!

ARUM COULD BE “BIG AL’S” BEST WITNESS

Haymon takes a flat 10% from his clients as an “advisor.” If you were with Arum, you might be giving up 33% to a manager and have the promoter taking his cut, all the while still having to pay your trainer and taxes. If this gets to Congress, all of these fighters that Haymon is appeasing with fat purses, the boxers and people like Arum will illustrate that the fistic Laborers are happier and getting paid more with Haymon. Case closed, again.

BACK TO THE BRONER-PORTER SKIRMISH

Although Porter has fought as a jr. middle (154), Broner was “chubby” previously at welterweight (147). Cross state rival Porter, who hails from Cleveland can be exploited by speed and combination punching as Brook illustrated, Broner will look to (and need to) stay off of the ropes as Shawn will be looking to “work both hands” up and down vs. a stationary target. And instead of admiring his flashy fists, Broner needs to make this all about his left jab. If he can’t, decision Porter.

SPENCE IN “TOUGH ON PAPER” UNDERNEATH

Errol Spence Jr. is a slick southpaw who most fighters would like to avoid. At 16-0, 13 whacks, Spence is supposed to be tested Saturday by the far more experienced Roberto Garcia (37-3, 23 stops). As was Broner-Porter, Spence-Garcia is a Texas rivalry pitting Dallas vs. Houston. Garcia matches up well in every department except age (35 to 25) and speed. And as we know the vast majority of the time, “Speed” kills in boxing and I’m going with the speed and the pedigree of Spence to prevail.

DOES AMIR KHAN DESERVE FLOYD MAYWEATHER?

KHAN BEAT ALGIERI…AS EXPECTED

Air Khan

Amir Khan

Los Angeles, CA- Last Friday on SPIKE TV, English boxing star Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KO) scored a unanimous decision win over Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KO) in the main event of the latest installment of Premier Boxing Champions on.  The fans at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY and those watching at home witnessed a decent fight between these two welterweights (147 lb.).  Khan won a close but clear 115-113 decision on my card, but did not look overly impressive.  In fact, he did not look nearly as good as I expected him too against the determined but light-punching Algieri.

JOHN DAVID JACKSON MAKES ALGIERI BETTER

The credit for Algieri’s solid performance should at least partly go to John David Jackson (36-4, 20 KO), a former super welterweight (154) and middleweight (160) champion who also trains current light heavyweight titlist (175) Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KO).  Algieri did a decent job as a pressure fighter, and was able to land some solid blows on Khan. Considering it was their first fight together, Algieri’s performance was quite impressive.  It appears Algieri  will be a tough guy to look good against for anyone in the future.  Unfortunately for the New York native, the quick hands and combination punching of the Brit proved to be too much to overcome. MAYWEATHER-PACQUIAO JUST LIKE ALI FRAZIER

FIGHTS OF 20TH & 21ST CENTURIES MIRROR ONE ANOTHER

Manny Pacquiao- v. Floyd Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao- v. Floyd Mayweather

San Francisco, CA– If you want to picture the Manny PacquiaoFloyd Mayweather, look at the “Fight of The Century” between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali on March 8, 1971. The reason I make this comparison is that unless Pacquiao can duplicate “Smokin’ Joe’s” work rate, there’s little chance of him winning Saturday night.
Pacquiao Smacks Floyd

Pacquiao Smacks Floyd

ALI BLUFFED BY FRAZIER’S FOLKS

When the Frazier-Ali I bout was proposed, Yank Durham, Joe Frazier’s shot caller, bluffed Ali’s manager Herbert Muhammad and told him that unless Ali agreed to a March 1971 fight, Joe was going to make him wait until 1973. Wanting again to be undisputed, the still WBC and Ring Magazine champ, Ali didn’t dislike Joe per se, but Frazier had what Ali felt was taken from him.

38 YEARS IS “ELDERLY” FOR RING GREATS

Floyd Connects From Long Range

Floyd Connects From Long Range

Seeing that was Frazier-Ali 1 went 15 rounds and this is 12, Pacquiao needs to open up a can of ass whip and test the conditioning and wherewithal of the now 38-year old Mayweather right away. Speaking of Ali, he was 38 like Floyd when Larry Holmes all but destroyed him. Another great Joe Louis, he too was slain at 38 by Rocky Marciano. That being said, Mayweather doesn’t look or box like any 38-year old before him.

THE WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO ERA

Wladomr Klitschko

Wladomr Klitschko

KLITSCHKO BEING DISSED BY AMERICANS?

San Francisco, CA– Whether or not you want to admit it or not, the era of Wladimir Klitschko, albeit in it’s final stages and after a somewhat shaky start, has been a run of dominance for a decade now. That’s right, World heavyweight champion Wladimir hasn’t lost a fight since March 2004.

UNEXPECTED LOSSES MADE KLITSCHKO SEARCH FOR REMEDY

When he started his ascent to the heavyweight throne there were lots of naysayers. Wlad had a bad chin, his endurance wasn’t good, he was uncoordinated. An Olympic champ in 1996, people were saying he fought sometimes like an amateur. After three inside the distance losses, running out of gas vs. the pedestrian Ross Purity, this before being hammered by the late Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster,

EMANUEL STEWARD MADE THE DIFFERENCE

The late Kronk Gym Goldfather Emanuel Steward is the sole reason Wladmir did not end up in the scrap heap. Steward told me one day, “There’s really no reason Wladimir Klitschko should ever lose a fight.” When I talked with Hall of Fame Larry Merchant hours after the Klitschko-Pulov fight in which Wlad dropped the Bulgarian four times in five rounds, Merchant had this to say. “Look, you’re not giving him his due. When he was coming up he fought like a welterweight because he had the ability to do so. That’s why he ran out of gas, not pacing himself. After getting cracked twice, Klitschko changed his style similar to brother Vitali.”

BOXING NOTES HAVE FLOYD IN REAR VIEW

FORGET FLOYD, JUST REMOVE HIM FROM THOUGHTS

Gennady Golovkin "Body & Fender" Work

Gennady Golovkin “Body & Fender” Work

San Francisco, CA– There was no need to get “nasty” over my appraisal of Floyd Mayweather through 47 professional outings. The Mayweather posse was rabid in responding to my feelings that Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran and Ray Leonard, all super champions of the 80’s, would have licked Floyd like a postage stamp.

GOLOVKIN TO “RUB OUT” RUBIO ON HBO

So with another Mayweather “outing” in the rear view mirror, there is time to look at the other fighters from whom Mayweather’s taking press from. WBA middleweight (160 lb.) champ Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) faces Marco Antonio Rubio (59=6-1, 51 KOs) October 18 on HBO from Carson, CA. The old Don King adage applies here. “His (Rubio’s) chances are slim and none and slim just left town.” The big fight at 160 in 2015 will be GGG vs. the winner of the PPV gold mine that is the Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez WBC & Ring Magazine middleweight title tiff.

“FILIPINO FLASH” IN WBA BOUT AT 126 UNDER GGG

Multi-division champion Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) duels Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) of Jamaica is the main support and the HBO co-feature. Last time out in May in Macau, Walters destroyed what was left of Vic Darchinyan (39-6-1, 28 KOs). Donaire was wisely steered away from a Guillermo Rigondeaux rematch at 122

Jhonny “KO” Gonzalez

ABNER MARES GETS SMOKED!

Carson, CAWBC 126 lb. (featherweight) champion Abner Mares (26-1-1, 15 KOs) suffered a shocking first round knockout loss at the hands of Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KOs). Gonzalez landed a left hook and Mares was dropped hard. A former member of that mythical ‘pound for pound’ top ten list, Mares got up on wobbly legs, only to be dropped even harder just seconds later. Mares did not make it up a second time, and a new WBC champion was crowned. The heavy-handed Gonzalez proved again why he is always a dangerous opponent. Time was 2:55 when referee Jack Reiss.

SANTA CRUZ WINS ACCORDING TO SCRIPT

In the co-feature, Leo Santa Cruz (25-0-1, 15 KOs) made short work of titleholder Victor Terrazas (37-3-1, 21 KOs) to become the new WBC super bantamweight (122) champion. Santa Cruz dropped the now ex-champion twice in the third round and the contest was halted at the 2:11 mark. The highly touted Santa Cruz put the pressure on the champion and did not let up. With his fan-friendly style, the sky is the limit for the now two-division champion Santa Cruz.
