SECOND AND FINAL INSTALLMENT
San Francisco, CA- In Part I, I took you through the maze of bull s*it that led up to the October 2, 1980 match between unbeaten heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and Muhammad Ali. The morning of the fight, the Godfather of all boxing writers, Jack Fiske is milling about the lobby of Caesars Palace. Also working the circular bar in the lobby (fight headquarters in those days) was press legend Dick Young when Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis (and two very unassuming bodyguards) approached the Big Apple columnist.
CAESARS PALACE LOBBY BAR WAS PLACE TO BE
Although the bar was open to the public, the ambiance was such that it made like a private setting. For some reason, only the most fanatical of fans would unknowingly breach the invisible circle of privacy that surrounds celebrities. Joe Frazier was there, as was Ken Norton, Joe Louis in a wheelchair, (all three have now passed) this less than six months away from the April 1981 death of the “Brown Bomber.”

KAUFMAN CAME PREPARED & YET RONDA ROUSEY LIT HER UP!
San Francisco, CA- When you have a fight that goes less than one minute, there really isn’t much to write about it. That being said, there people now calling Ronda Rousey, “the Mike Tyson of MMA,” this after she blitzed Sarah Kaufman (15-2) in the blink of an eye. While there are skeptics, if you look at her amateur judo pedigree, one can see that this is not something that happened overnight. While she’s 6-0, 6 first round submissions, all elbow wrenching arm-bars, “Triple R” (“Rowdy Ronda” Rousey) began competing at the age of 11, captured three Pan Am Games Gold Medals, an Olympic Bronze in 2008, she’s been competing since the age of 11 (14+ years now) in Judo.
RONDA VS. SANTOS IS WHAT THE FANS WANT!
The fight that people want to see is Rousey vs. Cris “Steroids” Santos. Suspended for one year for the use of Stanazol, a muscle building anabolic steroid that is tough to hide, whether you use “masking agents” or not. Santos won’t be able to fight until December 2012, so says the California State Athletic Commission. Having already beaten MMA champ turned Hollywood starlet Gina Carano, many thought the difference there was Performance Enhancing Drugs. If you look at pictures of Santos, you might think you were viewing the torso of a well-built male athlete.
SANTOS WILL HAVE TO MAKE 135 LBS. FOR “TRIPLE R”
That being said, Santos will have to make 135 lbs. in order to get a title fight with the Strikeforce bantamweight (135) champion. The fact that she will be closely monitored be it the California Commission who suspended her, but more likely the Nevada Commission means Santos won’t be able to use “juice” for the fight. I would think that while Santos is talented on the ground, at 135 and against the “Queen of Submissions” Rousey, the chick that looks like she might need to shave her face will get outworked and end up being nothing more than a fighter on the Rousey resume.

“ROWDY RONDA” ROUSEY IS NO JOKE FOLKS!
San Francisco, CA- There is little that Ronda Rousey will not talk about. Not only does she talk smack about her opponents, “Rowdy Ronda” took Kim Kardashian apart on the show and revealed what a phony piece of work Michael Phelps, the man that has won more Olympic medals than anyone in history, Ronda took him to task based on her being a 2008 Olympic team mate with Phelps. She all but verbally decapitated Cris “Cyborg” Santos, the woman who I say needs to shave at 4 PM each day, this from her use of Steroids! TO LISTEN NOW click on the black arrow READ MORE…

“RING TALK BOXING AND MMA” HAS LOTS OF BOXING AND MMA NEWS!
San Francisco, CA- Although Robert Guerrero’s win over Selcuk Aydin Saturday night was the “most talked about” boxing match of the week, there were other fights and news from the world of boxing. In addition, the MMA world, primarily the UFC & Strikeforce were in the news with upcoming cards, shifting fighters from the UFC to Strikeforce, and of course the MMA highlight of the Summer in my mind will be the August 18 Strikeforce card on Showtime featuring the phenomenal “Rowdy & Beautiful” Ronda Rousey. San Francisco, CA- In a one-sided fight that going in was supposed to be competitive, the Luke Rockhold-Tim Kennedy match for the Strikeforce middleweight (185 lbs) championship was just that, at least during the referee’s instructions. From the start of the fight and throughout all five-five minute rounds, Rockhold, who in the minds of the Strikeforce suits is their “male” face, had very little difficulty with Tim Kennedy and won going away with 49-46 (4-1 in rounds) in Portland, OR on a Showtime televised event. Kennedy’s forte was his wrestling ability, but Rockhold beat him at every facet of the game.
LONG LAYOFF DIDN’T AFFECT NATE!
Nate Marquardt fended off a great punch at the start of round one from Tyron Woodley, but from that point forward it was Marquardt who was throwing and landing on Woodley. After winning the first two frames, “Nate The Great” lost the third and he knew it going back to his corner. Coming out for round four, Nate put Woodley against the cage and started kicking the s*it out of him. A helacious uppercut ended matters and with the win “Nate The Great” takes the vacant Strikeforce welterweight (170) title.

San Francisco, CA- The most prolific writer in the history of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, Dave Meltzer, AKA the “MMA genius,” who publishes the weekly Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a 40,000 word publication which is essentially the trade paper of the UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator Fighting Championships, in other words the world of MMA, discussed UFC 148 & UFC 149, the problems the UFC has in showing their fights on the “limited” Fuel TV Network, in addition to a myriad of other subjects relating to Mixed Martial Arts. Meltzer is the real deal and we feel “blessed” when Dave can find the time to appear on the “Ring Talk MMA Hour.” TO LISTEN NOW READ MORE…

San Francisco, CA- Having written about and worked with some MMA stars over the years, the “hits” on UFC & Strikeforce stories greatly increased when the names of Brock Lesnar and Gina Carano were in the subject line. With Gina having done the movie Haywire that was released early this year, and about to start filming, In The Blood, this all before a rumored remake of Wonder Woman, Gina’s fighting days are probably done. Lesnar has left the UFC and returned to his professional wrestling roots. That being said, the hottest rising star in the world of MMA is Ronda Rousey.
FEMALE MMA VERSION OF ALI & FOREMAN WITH YOUNG BO DEREK LOOKS!
Like both Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, Ronda won an Olympic medal in 2008, this after winning the Pan American Gold in 2004 & 2005. She’s a great talker with the gift of gab, can fight, refuses to be pushed around, and like George Foreman in his post boxing “Grill Machine” era, she’s nice, easily approachable and very fan-friendly, this is addition to being beautiful. As for her record, “Double R” is 5-0 with all five wins coming via submission. Her last fight was against Miesha Tate, who Ronda forced to submit to an arm bar at 4:57 of round one. All of Ronda’s four prior fights combined did not last 4:57 in total. Tate, although her arm was not broken, it might have been better for her if it were as she is on the shelf until her ligaments and tendons heal.
