UFC 194 BETTER VALUE THAN FREE NBC BOXING?

TO PPV OR NOT THAT IS THE QUESTION?

(L-R) Opponents Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor staring each other down

(L-R) Opponents Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor staring each other down

San Francisco, CA– This Saturday’s UFC 194 is going straight up against free NBC boxing and Premier Boxing Champions presents champion Omar Figueroa on top. That being said, the UFC is putting forth their best two co-main events of the year, Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor & Chris Weidman-Luke Rockhold. Two unbeaten* champions and a pair of challengers that are not only coming to win, they have the ability to do so.

“SCARFACE” ALDO CURRENT BEST IN MMA

When it comes to Jose Aldo, the Brazilian is undefeated at 145 lbs. (MMA featherweight)
in 25 scraps. At 25-1, his lone loss was at ten lbs. heavier (155) at lightweight. The former WEC and reigning UFC champ is the ‘pound for pound’ best fighter in MMA period! That being said, Conor, the betting favorite is said to be Jo-say’s toughest foe in a decade of fighting.

CONOR BEATEN BY LESSER BUT BIGGER GUYS

His worthy adversary, the Irishman Conor McGregor has lost twice, both by submissions. But he has improved his game by becoming an even better Striker. His boxing skills and size, when you break it down, are his advantages here.

CONOR MIGHT BE 157 LBS. TODAY! Read more

DC NIPS GUS IN FIERY UFC 192 MAIN EVENT

205 LB. TITLE BOUT MAYBE “FIGHT OF THE YEAR”

Gus Eats DC Right

Gus Eats DC Right

Los Angeles, CA– It was a brutal fight from start to finish.  In the end, UFC champion Daniel Cormier (17-1) walked away with a narrow Split Decision 5 win after a fight that could have gone either way as Alexander Gustafsson (16-4) had a strong showing where he landed several solid kicks to the body, punches to the face, and a knee to the head that dropped the champ.  Gus even managed to take Cormier down, but he too was taken down once.

CHAMP WORKED WELL IN CLOSE

Cormier landed several uppercuts from the clinch throughout the fight, and held Gustafsson down on the mat for a large chunk of round one. It was the kind of fight where neither guy proved to be better than the other and a rematch seems highly likely in the near future. Score s were 48-47 DC, 48-47 Gus, and 49-46 DC.  With the win, Cormier will continue to keep the real* light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ (21-1) strap warm till mid 2016.

UFC FIGHT WEEK 2015 NOTEBOOK

DID CONOR MCGREGOR PROVE HIMSELF?

McGregor Finishes Off Game Mendes

McGregor Finishes Off Game Mendes

Los Angeles, CA-The much-discussed Conor McGregor (18-2) got the biggest win of his career against Chad Mendes (17-3) on Saturday night, but just how much did it mean?  Mendes took the fight on about two weeks notice and seemed to gas out after about a round, but Conor was able to capitalize on the situation and defeat his opponent by TKO 2 at 4:57 of round two.

MENDES OWNED CONOR WHILE GRAPPLING

Mendes is one of the best wrestlers in the featherweight (145 lb.) division and was able to take McGregor down 3 times on 4 attempts.  He was unable to avoid the thunderous left hand of the Irishman, which connected and dropped him before McGregor landed a few more to bring a swift end to the contest.

DID MENDES PEN BLUEPRINT ON BEATING CONOR?

McGregor did not look so great on the ground, but was able to weather the storm and landed several hard body kicks to wear down the tough Mendes.  Frankie Edgar (19-4-1) may be a fighter who can exploit Conor’s grappling deficiencies.

WERDUM DESTROYS UFC CHAMP VELASQUEZ

COCKY CAIN “PUNKED” BY WERDUM IN UFC 188

Cain "Taco Truck Owner" Velasquez

Cain “Taco Truck Owner” Velasquez

San Francisco, CA– What a stunner! Cain Velasquez, thought to be the “best cardio” guy in MMA, was sucking air early on before submitting to Fabrice Werdum with a guillotine choke in round three. As indicated by the photo here, Velasquez stopped visiting the Taco truck and instead bought a fleet of them from which he gorged himself during the latest Re Hab stint for the fighter out of the American Kickboxing Academyy in Silicon Valley, USA. Recovering from an injured knee, Cain had to weigh 300 lbs. when this photo was taken around four months ago.

WERDUM RESPECTED MMA & MEXICAN PEOPLE

Newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion Fabrice Werdum, a Brazilian who resides in Los Angeles, realized that the nearly 8,000 foot altitude of Mexico City was as much an opponent as Velasquez himself. So Werdum spent nearly two months in the altitude in order to become acclimated to the “thin” air. Velasquez, in addition to taking off 60 lbs., arrived a little less than two weeks ago. When Werdum brought this up a few weeks ago, most people scoffed thinking nothing the Brazilian could do to derail the now two-time champion. As it turns out, Velasquez wasn’t in the fight until it was over!

WERDUM, CAIN, ARVLOSKI & DOS SANTOS TOP WEAK FIELD

There are a lot of UFC heavyweights, but quantity doesn’t equal quality. Ex-champ Junior Dos Santos who was mangled twice in succession by Velasquez after scoring a quick KO in their first encounter, in all likelihood will get the first shot at the new champion. It was Dos Santos who last beat Werdum in 2010, thus the rematch for the title makes both dollars and sense. Andrei Arvloski, another ex-titleholder is on an impressive win streak as well, thus he could be #1 for Werdum. Regardless, whether it is “AA” or Dos Santos, Werdum would be a significant favorite to beat both men.

UFC ON FOX 14 SATURDAY

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT (205 LBS.) TITLE ELIMINATOR MAIN EVENT

"The Mauler" Returns

“The Mauler” Returns

Los Angeles, CA– Number one contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson (16-2) takes on number three contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (18-4) in the main event of 2015’s first Big Fox UFC card on Saturday night.  The card will take place in Gus’ home country at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.  The Mauler may just need that home-field advantage, as he is sharing the octagon with one of his toughest opponents to date.  Rumble is on an 8-fight winning streak, including going 2-0 since his return to the UFC last year.   In the end, I think Gustafsson might be the best light heavyweight on the planet, so I think he carries the day here.  I recently re-watched Gustafsson’s fight with champion Jon Jones (21-1) for the fourth time and still had the Swede winning, despite the judges scoring the fight in favor of Jones.  A rematch between the two is one of the biggest fights out there, and I think we will see it by the end of the year.

“HENDO” MAY THINK ABOUT RETIREMENT AFTER CO-MAIN

Middleweight (185) Dan Henderson (30-12) is 44 years old and 1-4 in his last five fights.  The legend has nothing more to prove in mixed martial arts, and I do not think he gets past Gegard Mousasi (32-5-2) on Saturday.  Mousasi had a poor showing against rising contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (21-3, 1 NC) in his last fight, but I still think the former Strikeforce champion has more than enough to beat the faded veteran.  If he does, I think Henderson may retire from competition altogether or be cut by the UFC at the very least. JOSE ALDO & UFC 179 RESULTS

UFC 179 MAIN EVENT A THRILLER

Jose "Scarface" Aldo

Jose “Scarface” Aldo

Los Angeles, CA– The rematch between UFC featherweight (145) champ Jose Aldo and Chad “Money” Mendez (16-2) was much more competitive the first, which ended in a first round knee-to-the-face knockout of Mendez by Aldo.  This one went the full five rounds.  Mendez managed to drop Jose in the first round, but was also dropped twice himself in the same stanza.  The second knockdown Mendez suffered was just after the bell, which is a bit of a gray area.  Still, it looked as though Aldo won the first round, the next two, and maybe gave up the last two to Mendez.  In the end, it was the 18th straight win for the Brazilian.  I personally scored it 49-46 for Aldo, which was the same as all three judges.

CO-MAIN EVENT MORE OF A SNOOZER

The co-main was essentially a wrestling exhibition for light heavyweight contender Phil Davis (13-2, 1 NC), who repeatedly took down Glover Teixeira (22-4) en route to a unanimous decision win.  It was far from entertaining, and I give Phil Davis absolutely no chance of beating champion Jon Jones (20-1).  He deserves a title shot, but he would be thoroughly outclassed in every aspect of fighting by Jones.
