THE HOWARD DAVIS I REMEMBER
San Francisco, CA
Howard Davis Jr.
– When I learned that 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist Howard Davis
passed a few days ago from Lung Cancer, I was relieved….for both Howard and his family. Suffice to say there are a lot of ways to check out of this Hotel we call Life. But dying of Lung disorders, I’ve witnessed many, it is a painfully, incredibly horrific way to die.
TALKED VIA FACEBOOK AS GENARO “FACTOR” LOOMED
We clicked a little back and forth since the diagnosis, but I couldn’t push myself to ask for any of his limited time to talk or do radio. This had a lot to do with my interviewing Genaro Hernandez 36 hours or so prior to his being KO’d by guess who, yeah Cancer. I was in tears as Genaro acknowledged death was imminent. Like Howard Davis, Genaro didn’t smoke or drink.
DEATH WAS GONNA BE QUICK
While it was clear that the Grim Reaper had reserved a room for the 56 year old as the Stage 4 Diagnosis meant weeks and then on his last legs just a fortnight ago, I just couldn’t push myself to contact Howard. And much like Genaro and SHO Box announcer Nick Charles, Howard fought Cancer like the greatest of champions, something I’m not so sure this writer is man enough to do.

DAVIS TRULY A GREAT FIGHTER & GREAT MAN!
San Francisco, CA
Happy Birthday Howard!
– Having known Howard Davis
, the 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist & the Boxing Team MVP
for better than three decades, Howard is a shining example of a great man, his world class boxing skills aside. Davis who turns 56 today, was burned in a 1984 WBC
lightweight (135 lbs) title fight with Edwin Rosario
, with the judges using a 12th round knockdown to steal the decision from him. Prior to that, Howard went 15 in 1980 rounds with then WBC champ Jim Watt
in the UK, and lost a 15 round decision over the dirty fighter that is infamous for spearing (not just head butting, spearing) Sean O’Grady
. Never in the Police blotters, no news clippings about his being anything less than that of a great man, it is with great pleasure that I wish Howard Davis a very Happy Birthday! Currently living in Florida, Howard is working with and training MMA fighters. A man who brought class to a new and higher level, Davis (36-6-1, 14 KOs) was the greatest amateur boxer never to win a professional world title!
