“KING” ANTHONY PETTIS DEFENDS AT UFC 185

BEST “POUND-FOR-POUND”(?) FIGHTS SATURDAY

Anthony "Showtime" Pettis

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis

Los Angeles, CA- Grab a seat and enjoy “Showtime” on Saturday night, as Anthony “Showtime” Pettis (18-2) defends his UFC lightweight belt against Rafael dos Anjos (23-7) in the main event of UFC 185.  Pettis, the UFC lightweight (155 lb.) champion is one of the best all-around fighters out there, and he will continue to prove that on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX with what I believe will be a decisive win over dos Anjos.  The Brazilian will give his all, but he appears to be no match for the amazing Pettis.

STRAWWEIGHT (115) TITLE ON THE LINE IN CO-MAIN

Carla "Cookie Monster" Esparza

Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza

Strawweight champion Carla Esparza (10-2) will defend her title against tough striker Joanna Jedrzejczyk (8-0).  Poland’s Jedrzejczyk could easily take the belt, but I see the versatility of Esparza winning the day.  This bout will be interesting from start to finish, so make sure you tune in.

HENDRICKS ON THE REBOUND

Former welterweight (170) champ Johny Hendricks (16-3) will try to bounce back from losing his title by securing a win over Matt Brown (19-12).  This will be a fun fight for the fans, and one I see Hendricks winning.  Brown is very tough and has improved drastically the last few years, but Hendricks is simply better. RONDA ROUSEY AMAZING AT UFC 184

UFC’S BIGGEST STAR SHINES BRIGHT AT STAPLES CENTER

Double R

Double R

Los Angeles, CA- UFC star “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (11-0) retained her bantamweight (135) belt and took “Alpha” Cat Zingano’s (9-1) zero in the process in the main event of UFC 184.  In just 14 seconds, Rousey submitted Zingano with on of her famous armbars.  Going in, many picked Zingano to win, but here at Ring Talk, we knew she was no match for the Rowdy one.  Rousey and Zingano become the first females to headline a UFC pay-per-view show.  With all of the extra eyes on her, Ronda put on perhaps her most impressive performance to date.

ROUSEY IS MUST-SEE TV

You may not realize it, but you are witnessing a special talent.  Enjoy Rousey while she is here, as I cannot see her remaining in the fight game for too long.  The Olympic judoka has charisma that transcends the appeal of mixed martial arts, and has undoubtedly brought new demographics to the Ultimate Fighting Championships. BRIT TAKES BELLATOR TITLE ON SPIKE TV

NEW BRITISH BELLATOR CHAMP

Bellator British Invasion

Los Angeles, CA- At Bellator 143-British Invasion, British light heavyweight (205) Liam McGeary (10-0) became the new champion by defeating Emmanuel Newton (26-7-1) by unanimous decision.  McGeary was in control throughout, al;though Newton had his moments.  The giant 6’6″ fighter will be an interesting champion in the coming months.

KONGO FIGHT GOES THE DISTANCE

Cheick Kongo (22-10-2) of France lost a debatable split decision to Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal (15-4, 1 NC) of the United States in Mo’s heavyweight (265 limit) debut.  It was a close fight, but one that could end up leading to Kongo’s retirement.  At 39, I am really not sure what else he has to offer.  He has had a solid career, but losing to a guy who was not even that great fighting 60 pounds below seems like a bad sign for the veteran heavyweight. RONDA ROUSEY-CAT ZINGANO TOP UFC 184

PAIR OF FEMALE BOUTS TOP UFC 184

San Francisco, CA- In a battle of two unbeaten stars, the “Queen of MMA” aka Rhonda Rousey (9-0) will defend her UFC bantamweight (135 lbs) against the top rated Cat Zingano (also 9-0) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA as UFC 184 goes live on Pay Per View at 7 PM PT.

Cris "Look Like A Man" Santos

Cris “Look Like A Man” Santos

CYBORG SANTOS TRULY A “CYBORG”

Last night in El Lay, Cris “Cyborg” Santos, who has underwent a name change probably to escape her record of being a Steroid cheat (a cyborg is a fictional being with both organic and biomechatronic parts) who was popped by the California Commission a while back for Steroids. A chick in need of a shave by 5 PM, Cyborg waisted a girl named Charmaine Tweet in a Tweet that lasted just 46 seconds in defense of the Envicta FC 145 lb. (featherweight) title.

DANA WHITE WITNESSED CARNAGE

This is another example of the UFC being on top from a marketing point of view as Rousey-Cyborg is the biggest fight out there in women’s MMA, and it might be in all of MMA as I anticpate incredible if NOT record MMA/UFC Pay Per View numbers for Rousey-Cyborg, but only if Rhonda can get by a quite talented Zingano tonight. Although favored, anything can happen in MMA and Cat appears to be the best fighter Rousey has yet to face.

San Francisco, CA- On the longest running fight show in history, 30+ years, “Ring Talk Worldwide, host Pedro Fernandez “broke bread” with retired UFC fighter Kyle Kingsbury. The many failed Drug Tests (Steroids) were a big part of the conversation as well as the upcoming UFC schedule.

EX-UFC KING FRANK MIR KO’S GIANT SILVA

FRANCISCO SANTOS MIR, III IS BACK

Farnk Mir Returnith!

Farnk Mir Returnith!

San Francisco, CA- When it comes to former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, it’s quite obvious after his one-punch knockout of Giant Silva, Sunday night that you, “Can teach an old dog new tricks.”

MIR IS A BLAST TO BE AROUND!

One of the great personalities in sports, Mir, a Las Vegas resident put himself back in the UFC top ten by halting the 3-1 favorite Silva in 1:43 before a sold out crowd of Brazilians who were so quiet after the TKO that you would have thought I hit my TV’s mute button.

SINK OR SWIM FIGHT & FRANK SWAM

Having lost four straight, the consensus among people was that Silva was going to steamroll Mir in this battle of 45-year olds seeing he has looked less than stellar before coming back tonight after a year layoff.

UFC P.E.D. SCANDAL SPIRALS OUT OF CONTROL

Ultimate Steroid Championships?

Ultimate Steroid Championships?

Los Angeles, CA- When news broke last week that the beloved “Greatest of All Time,” former UFC middleweight (185) champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva (34-6) tested positive for two performance-enhancing drugs in pre-fight tests for his January 31 bout with former Strikeforce welterweight (170) champion Nick Diaz (26-10, 1 NC), the mixed martial arts world was turned upside down.  Silva had developed an unbeatable aura before his back-to-back TKO2 losses to Chris Weidman (12-0).  A young man from Brazil who beat all odds and become possibly the best fighter in MMA history.  He rose from obscurity to do things in the cage no one had ever done before.  All of Silva’s accomplishments are now sadly accompanied by an asterisk.

SILVA ONLY THE BEGINNING

Since Anderson’s positive test last week, two more big names in mixed martial arts have popped for steroids.  Current World Series of Fighting contender Jon Fitch (26-7-1, 1 NC) failed a drug test because of elevated testosterone levels prior to his December 13 loss to Rousimar Palhares (17-6).  Palhares failed a drug test for elevated testosterone levels at UFC on FOX 6 back in 2012.  Fitch was always a strong opponent of performance-enhancing drugs, which made his positive test a shock to many.  UFC welterweight contender Hector “Showeather” Lombard’s (35-4-1, 1 NC) drug test failure, which was announced this week was not surprising to me. UFC FIGHT NIGHT: HENDERSON MOVES UP

BENDO TESTS THE WATERS AT 170

Benson "Split Decision" Henderson

Benson “Split Decision” Henderson

Los Angeles, CA- Former WEC and UFC lightweight (155) champion Benson “Smooth” Henderson (21-5) is moving up to welterweight (170) on Saturday night in the main event of UFC Fight Night:  Henderson vs. Thatch.  “Bendo” has been a huge lightweight for years, and will fight in a division that is likely closer to his natural weight.  Brandon “Rukus” Thatch (11-1) will be looking to derail Henderson’s welterweight debut.

WILL BEN SUCCEED AT WELTER?

Henderson has only beaten one out of twelve UFC foes within the scheduled distance, and I do not think he will be able to finish Thatch.  In fact, I think he loses to Thatch.  I just do not feel Ben has the fire or the power to do anything substantial at welterweight.  He is a “point fighter” whose bread and butter is winning decisions over people smaller than him.  This time, he won’t have a size advantage. SHOULD CONTACT SPORTS BE BANNED?

Arturo Gatti "Post Fight(s)

LIKE MUHAMMAD ALI ISN’T DAMAGED

San Francisco, CA-There have been many studies on the head trauma caused by boxing, as well as other “contact” sports in general. Bottom line is that if you get hit in the head “”right”” and often, unless you’re a freak of nature, you will indeed suffer from the residual effects of being struck. Every time I bring up the two-world ranked Quarry brothers, Jerry and Mike, both of whom were diagnosed with Pugilistic Dementia, of which Jerry died from, people in the business try and counter with ”Carmen Basilio and George Chuvalo took a lot of punches, and they’re fine today.” But, much like George Foreman winning the heavyweight championship at 45, they are the exception to the rule.

RECENT STUDY SAYS THREE STRIKES AND…..

An National Football League study says, ”Our research shows that three concussions may be the threshold for lasting damage.” Most high school gridiron participants are thought to have suffered three concussions before even graduating. I only had one concussion (I believe) in 19 years of off and on boxing. I can recall acting somewhat bizarre, if not outright foolish after a National Golden Gloves bout at the Showboat in Las Vegas.

ANDERSON SILVA ON STEROIDS FOR UFC 183

“THE SPIDER” WAS ON STEROIDS SATURDAY!

Anderson "I Take Steroids" Silva

Anderson “I Take Steroids” Silva

San Francisco, CA- If you (like myself) were marveled at the physical torso of 39-year old Anderson Silva last Saturday for UFC 183, there’s a reason. Mr. Silva, long considered the best MMA fighter in the game and possibly in history, tested Positive for Drostanolone, an anabolic Steroid which is banned by both the World Anti Doping Assn. and the governing Nevada Athletic Commission.

PEOPLE THINK ALL MMA FIGHTERS ON STEROIDS?

Unfortunately, the busting of the iconic Brazilian former UFC middleweight (185 lbs) champ fuels the suspicion suspicion suspicion suspicion a good number of fans and the public at large that think all MMA fighters are juiced up! Is there any real merit to that claim? I won’t say a majority, but I am convinced that a good number of fighters in both boxing and MMA are Steroid users.

GUYS LIKE VICTOR CONTE MADE CHEATING SCIENTIFIC!

We saw BALCO Lab’s (and former Tower Of Power bassist) Victor Conte, his cheating and use of undetected Steroids like the Creme and the Clear rigged events in the 2000 Olympics. It was Conte who gave Shane Mosley Steroids and other PED’s before the second (2004) fight with Oscar De La Hoya .

ANDERSON SILVA IN CHOREOGRAPHED RETURN

Anderson Silva Celebrates!

Anderson Silva Celebrates!

San Francisco, CA- If you did a Google search for MMA fighter Nick Diaz you’d find a troubled young man. Once a champion with the now defunct Strikeforce MMA brand at 170 lbs., Diaz has had a fight (win) taken off his record because he had more THC (Marijuana) in his system than anybody ever tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Last night against Anderson Silva (34-6 MMA, 17-2 UFC), the Stockton, CA resident Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) looked beyond pathetic.

NICK HAD EVERYTHING GOING AGAINST HIM

Yes, Nick was outsized. Yes, Nick was brought in to lose. Yes, Nick did just enough to make it appear Silva is back at 39, this after a KO loss to current middleweight (185) king Chris Weidman and Weidman breaking Silva’s leg in a rematch. Offensively, Nick Diaz was null and void. He had nothing and while he was in against a much bigger foe, the Nick Diaz that started a riot on CBS TV which canceled Strikeforce on the network because of the melee a few years ago, the Nick Diaz with fire in his belly is deceased!

SILVA LOOKED “STELLAR” THROUGHOUT

With Silva fighting a “Dead Man Walking” in Diaz, the Spider looked like he was 25 and not 39. Credit President Dana White and UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for “getting the right” opponent for the come-backing Brazilian icon. Scores were 50-45 twice & 49-46 all for Silva who will have a meeting with family members before deciding as to whether or not he will fight on at 39. Beating Chris Weidman appears to a longshot, thus Siva would best be served to walk away now.

UFC ON FOX 14 SATURDAY

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT (205 LBS.) TITLE ELIMINATOR MAIN EVENT

"The Mauler" Returns

“The Mauler” Returns

Los Angeles, CA- Number one contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson (16-2) takes on number three contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (18-4) in the main event of 2015’s first Big Fox UFC card on Saturday night.  The card will take place in Gus’ home country at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.  The Mauler may just need that home-field advantage, as he is sharing the octagon with one of his toughest opponents to date.  Rumble is on an 8-fight winning streak, including going 2-0 since his return to the UFC last year.   In the end, I think Gustafsson might be the best light heavyweight on the planet, so I think he carries the day here.  I recently re-watched Gustafsson’s fight with champion Jon Jones (21-1) for the fourth time and still had the Swede winning, despite the judges scoring the fight in favor of Jones.  A rematch between the two is one of the biggest fights out there, and I think we will see it by the end of the year.

“HENDO” MAY THINK ABOUT RETIREMENT AFTER CO-MAIN

Middleweight (185) Dan Henderson (30-12) is 44 years old and 1-4 in his last five fights.  The legend has nothing more to prove in mixed martial arts, and I do not think he gets past Gegard Mousasi (32-5-2) on Saturday.  Mousasi had a poor showing against rising contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (21-3, 1 NC) in his last fight, but I still think the former Strikeforce champion has more than enough to beat the faded veteran.  If he does, I think Henderson may retire from competition altogether or be cut by the UFC at the very least.
