“THE DRAGON” TOPS UFC FIGHT NIGHT

December 18th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

LYOTO MACHIDA ON FOX SPORTS 1 SATURDAY

Lyoto Machida

Lyoto Machida

Los Angeles, CA- Everybody agrees that Brazilain middleweight (185 lb.) contender Lyoto Machida gave champion Chris Weidman (12-0) the toughest fight of his career so far. The UD loss after 5 rounds of action may have been a setback for the veteran striker, but Machida can earn his way back to another crack at the belt.  The road to redemption starts Saturday, December 20 versus C.B. Dollaway (15-5).  Dollaway looks like the kind of fighter Lyoto normally eats for breakfast, so expect a highlight-reel finish here from the Jose Correa Arena in Bareuri, Sao Paolo, Brazil.

BARAO CAN MAKE 135 IN BRAZIL?

Renan Barao (32-2, 1 NC), recently considered one of the best fighters in the world, is on his own road to redemption after losing his title in embarrassing fashion to T.J. Dillashaw (11-2) this May, and then failing to make weight for a schedule rematch in August.  Mitch Gagnon (12-2) does not look like much of a threat to Barao on paper, but it is difficult to determine which version of Renan will show up.  If the version that was brutally beaten by Dillashaw en route to a 5th round TKO loss shows up, Barao may be in trouble.

CORMIER’S RAGDOLL CUMMINS RETURNS

Patrick Cummins (6-1) was thrown around the octagon effortlessly and TKO’d in just 1:19 by Daniel Cormier in his fight UFC fight, but the light heavyweight (205) has rebounded by winning two straight, including a UD 3 over Kyle Kingsbury (11-6, 1 NC).  Antonio Carlos, Jr. (4-0) should taste defeat for the first time on Saturday, courtesy of Kingsbury.  Preceding this bout will be a matchup between lightweights (155) Rashid Magomedov (17-1) and Elias Silverio (11-0) that seems to favor the Russian.

UFC ON FOX 13 RESULTS

December 14th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

JDS (17-3) Wins, But Looks Lackluster

JDS (17-3) Wins, But Looks Lackluster

DOS SANTOS WINS UGLY

Los Angeles, CA- Junior Dos Santos, who held the UFC heavyweight (265 lb. limit) for one fight back in 2012, handed Stipe Miocic (12-2) the second loss of his career in the main event of UFC on Fox 13 from the US Airways Center in Phoenix, AZ.  Dos Santos was bloodied and rocked throughout the fight, but overcame a stiff test and escaped with another addition to his win column.  Now let’s just hope he stays far away from another whooping at the hands of champ Cain Velasquez (13-1).

DOS ANJOS DOMINATES DIAZ

Lightweight (155) Rafael dos Anjos (23-7) thoroughly outclassed Nate Diaz (17-10) in the fight before the headliner.  Dos Anjos caused serious damage to Diaz lead leg with vicious kicks, and took the Stockton, CA native down repeatedly to make a statement tonight.  He has earned a shot (poor guy) at Anthony “Showtime” Pettis’ (18-2) belt.

TONIGHT UFC ON FOX WITH DOS SANTOS

December 13th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

BIG FOX NETWORK FEATURES EX-UFC CHAMP

 Junior Dos Santos

Junior Dos Santos

Los Angeles, CA- Although ex-UFC titleholder (heavyweight- 265 lb. limit) Junior Dos Santos is coming off two horrendous beatings at the hands of champion Cain Velaquez (13-1), he should still have enough left to beat the limited Stipe Miocic (12-1) in the main event of UFC on Fox 13 from the US Airways Center in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, December 13.  If he does not, do not be surprised if Dos Santos is cut by the UFC for his own good.

YOUNGER DIAZ RETURNS

Lightweight (155) Nate Diaz (17-9), the brother of the infamous Nick Diaz (26-9, 1 NC), returns to fight Rafael dos Anjos (22-7).  Nate may be able to win with his high volume, but he will need to be careful of the dos Anjos counters that stopped  former champ Ben Henderson (21-4).

STEROID CHEAT IN DANGER OF BEING CUT

Heavyweight Alistair Overeem (37-14), once thought to be a threat to Cain, is now fighting for his job.  He is 2-3 in the UFC, with all three losses coming by knockout and the last two coming in the first round.  Luckily for him, he will be facing Stefan Struve (25-6), who is pretty good at getting knocked out himself.  Five of Struve’s six losses have been knockouts.

MORE HEAVYWEIGHTS ROUND OUR MAIN CARD

Matt Mitrione (8-3) and Gabriel Gonzaga (16-8) will open up the four-fight Big Fox card at 8PM/5PM ETPT by facing each other.  Mitrione is a slight favorite here, but Gonzaga is a very live dog.  As usual, the UFC has put up a good card for Big Fox in the hopes of drawing greater interest in the sport of MMA.  Tune in for a solid event.

ULTIMATE FIGHTER FINALE RESULTS

December 13th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

FEMALE STRAWWEIGHTS TAKE CENTERSTAGE

Carla Esparza First UFC Strawweight (115 lb.) Champion

Carla Esparza First UFC Strawweight (115 lb.) Champion

Los Angeles, CA- Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza was crowned The Ultimate Fighter tonight at the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, NV, as she defeated Rose Namajunas (2-2) with a rear-naked choke at 1:26 of round number three.  With several strawweights featured on this card, Esparza will have her hands full defending this new belt.

OLVEIRA TOPS STEVENS IN CO-FEATURE

Featherweight (145) Charles Oliveira (19-4, 1 NC) won a unanimous decision after 3 rounds over Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stevens (23-11) in an uneventful scrap.  A lightweight (155) bout between K.J. Noons (13-7, 1 NC) and Daron Cruickshank (16-5, 1 NC) ended in a no-contest after Noons’ repeated eye pokes left Cruickshank unable to continue.  Lightweight Yancy Medeiros (11-2, 1 NC) took just 4:37 to submit Joe Proctor (10-3) with a guillotine in round 1.  Jessica Penne (12-2) defeated Randa Markos (4-2) by split decision in the opening bout of the main card.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER FINALE TONIGHT!

December 12th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

UFC ON FOX SPORTS TONIGHT WITH TUF FINALE

Jessica Penne

Jessica Penne

Los Angeles, CA- The latest incarnation of The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC‘s flagship television series, will conclude this evening from the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, NV.  The main event on the card will be the coronation of the female 115 lb. strawweight division.  Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza (9-2) will square off with Rose Namajunas (2-1) in a fight that seems to favor the far greater experience level of Esparza.

KNOCKOUT ARTIST STEVENS (23-10) RETURNS IN CO-FEATURE

Featherweight Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stevens will take on Charles Oliveira (18-4, 1 NC) in a decent scrap.  Other than that, this card looks devoid of real entertainment value.  K.J. Noons (13-7) will meet Daron Cruickshank (16-5) in a lightweight (155) battle, lightweights Yancy Medeiros (10-2, 1 NC) and Joe Proctor (10-2) will mix it up, and rounding out the main card is a strawweight bout between Jessica Penne (11-2) and Randa Markos (4-1). A lot of up and comers both male and female on this card.

ROBBIE LAWLER WIN TOPS UFC 181

December 8th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

LAWLER BEATS HENDRICKS BY SPLIT DUKE IN REMATCH

Robbie Lawler

Robbie Lawler

Robbie Lawler (24-10, 1 NC) scored a win over Johny Hendricks (16-3) on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.  Their first fight back in March was a close decision that went in favor of Hendricks, and the second was more of the same, with many observers feeling Hendricks did enough to keep his belt.  The bout could have gone either way, as the  48-47 cards in favor of each man showed.   What was inexcuseable was the 49-46 card for Lawler turned in by Glen Trowbridge.  Giving Hendricks only one round is inexcusable.

TRILOGY IN ORDER?

With the score tied 1-1 in fights, it seems a third fight is inevitable.  I think Rory MacDonald will likely be next for the new champ, with Carlos Condit (29-8) and Tyron Woodley (14-3) looming large in the background.  If Hendricks keeps winning, he will get another crack at the strap in the near future.

LIGHTWEIGHT (155) CHAMP PETTIS AMAZING

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis choked out Gilbert Melendez (22-4) in the second round of their championship battle.  Time was 1:53.  After a competitive first round that saw Melendez pursue effectively and saw Pettis land some solid strikes, the champion took over in the second and finished Melendez with a Guillotine choke.  Pettis continues to prove he is a great athlete and a mixed martial arts star.

TWO HEAVYWEIGHT KNOCKOUTS UNDERNEATH

Travis Browne (17-2-1) knocked out Brendan Schaub (10-5) with just ten seconds left in the very first round. It was a fairly competitive round, but the superior striking and chin of Browne was too lethal a combination for Schaub in the end.  Rounding out the main card was a Todd Duffee (9-2) knockout of Anthony Hamilton (13-4) in just 33 seconds and a lightweight SUB2 (4:19) by Tony Ferguson (18-3) of Abel Trujillo (12-6, 1 NC).

FRANKIE EDGAR WIN TOPS UFC FIGHT NIGHT

November 23rd, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

EDGAR SUBMITS SWANSON IN UFC FIGHT NIGHT 57 MAIN EVENT

Frankie Edgar-Cub Swanson

Frankie Edgar-Cub Swanson

Los Angeles, CA- Former UFC lightweight (155) champion and current featherweight (145) contender Frankie Edgar dominated Cub Swanson.  Edgar should change his nickname to “Bear” after the way he made Cub his son in the octagon.  It was nowhere near close by the time Edgar submitted Swanson with a neck crank with just 4 seconds left in the 5th and final round.  Swanson was nearing a title shot against Jose Aldo (25-1), and Edgar may just get his second shot at Aldo’s belt.  Their first fight was competitive, and Edgar may be able to pull off the W in a rematch.

BARBOZA DECISIONS GREEN IN CO-HEADLINER

Lightweight (155) contender Edson Barboza (15-2) out-struck Bobby Green (23-6)  and earned a unanimous decision nod.  Green employed a poor game plan of hanging around the outside against an excellent striker who prefers space.  It was a recipe for disaster, and Barboza inches closer to a title shot against Anthony Pettis (17-2) with the win.

HO-HUM UNDERCARD FOR THIS FIGHT NIGHT

Bantamweight (135) Chico Camus (15-5) took a split decision over Brad Pickett (24-10).  Joseph Benavidez (21-4) continued his solid career with a unanimous decision win over Dustin Ortiz (14-4) at flyweight (125). Lightweight Matt Wiman (16-7) was a UD3 winner versus Isaac Valle-Flagg (14-6-1).  The main highlight of the undercard was heavyweight (265 limit) Alexey “The Boa Constrictor” Oleinik (50-9-1), who knocked out Jared Rosholt (11-2) in just 3:21.

JOSE ALDO & UFC 179 RESULTS

October 31st, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

UFC 179 MAIN EVENT A THRILLER

Jose "Scarface" Aldo

Jose “Scarface” Aldo

Los Angeles, CA- The rematch between UFC featherweight (145) champ Jose Aldo and Chad “Money” Mendez (16-2) was much more competitive the first, which ended in a first round knee-to-the-face knockout of Mendez by Aldo.  This one went the full five rounds.  Mendez managed to drop Jose in the first round, but was also dropped twice himself in the same stanza.  The second knockdown Mendez suffered was just after the bell, which is a bit of a gray area.  Still, it looked as though Aldo won the first round, the next two, and maybe gave up the last two to Mendez.  In the end, it was the 18th straight win for the Brazilian.  I personally scored it 49-46 for Aldo, which was the same as all three judges.

CO-MAIN EVENT MORE OF A SNOOZER

The co-main was essentially a wrestling exhibition for light heavyweight contender Phil Davis (13-2, 1 NC), who repeatedly took down Glover Teixeira (22-4) en route to a unanimous decision win.  It was far from entertaining, and I give Phil Davis absolutely no chance of beating champion Jon Jones (20-1).  He deserves a title shot, but he would be thoroughly outclassed in every aspect of fighting by Jones.

THE NIGHT “ALI THE FIGHTER” DIED IN VEGAS

October 2nd, 2014 By Pedro Fernandez

10/2/1980 FIGHT A RING DEATH TO MANY

Ali Training For Larry Holmes

Muhammad Ali Training For Larry Holmes

San Francisco, CA- The overweight man you see with a mustache here is Muhammad Ali in the late summer of 1980. After a two year hiatus from boxing, this after besting Leon Spinks in a 1978 rematch, promoter Don King (only eight years into promoting) convinced Muhammad to come back and fight unbeaten World heavyweight champion Larry Holmes on October 2, 1980, 34 years ago today. Actually, Ali didn’t need much convincing as DK was offering him $8 million reasons to fight again.

CHAMPION WAS SECOND FIDDLE HERE

A former sparring partner of Ali, Larry can be seen beating Ali up in a Deer Lake, PA training session in the movie, “Ali: Brains, Skill, & Guts,” taped in 1974 as Ali prepped for his “Rumble in The Jungle” with George Foreman. Holmes, AKA “The Easton Assassin” was 31 years young and 35-0, 26 KOs.

TJ DILLASHAW WINS UFC CROWN STOPPING RENAN BARAO

May 25th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

ANOTHER BRAZILIAN MMA LEGEND SLAIN BY YANKEE

TJ Dillashaw Sets Tone Early

TJ Dillashaw Sets Tone Early

Las Vegas, NV- In a shocking upset, a vastly improved T.J. Dillashaw (11-2) put a beating on bantamweight (135) champion Renan Barao (32-2) before dropping him and finishing him off in the 5th round. The new champ set the tone for the evening when he drilled the Brazilian into the canvas with a single right hand.

BOXING KEY TO VICTORY

Although the Team Alpha Male member fighting out of Sacramento, CA mixed in some takedowns here and there, it was Dillashaw’s superior boxing and footwork that allowed him to pull off a bigger upset than Chris Weidman did in beating Anderson Silva the first time last year. Barao was heavily favored going in but was thoroughly dominated by the new titleholder who was ranked #9.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT SEES BROWN BEST SILVA

May 11th, 2014 By Zak "Attack" Young

UFC FIGHT NIGHT ON FOX WAS SOLID!

UFC Czar Dana White

UFC Czar Dana White

Los Angeles, CA- In the main event of UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva from the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, OH, welterweight (170 lbs.) Matt Brown (19-11) continued his recent string of knockouts with a TKO over Erick Silva (16-5-0-1) at 2:11 of round three. It was a pretty dominant performance from Brown, who was able to stifle the offense of the explosive Silva throughout. This win moves Brown closer to the crack at the title in a very loaded welterweight division. Silva, who is now 4-4 in the UFC, may be forced to continue his career in another organization.

SEMI-MAIN EVENT ENDS EARLY AS WELL!

In the co-feature, middleweight (185) Costas Phillippou (13-4-1) knocked out Lorenz Larkin (14-3-1) just 3:37 seconds into the very first round. Both men landed some nice shots, but in the end, Phillippou was able to drop Larkin with a hard left hook that sealed the deal. I thought Larkin might just be good enough to best Costas who appeared to be on the way down, but Phillippou proved he has fight left in him.
