NBC HAS P.B.C. BOXING – ANTHONY JOSHUA IN UK

NBC CARD TOPPED BY OMAR FIGUEROA

Future Heavyweight King Anthony Joshua

Future Heavyweight King Anthony Joshua

San Francisco, CA– The stunning upset of Peter Quillin last Saturday by Danny Jacobs was “good” for both the boxing game and promoter Al Heyman’s Premier Boxing Champions. Boxing fans that have watched PBC evolve in 2015 on various Networks, Spike, ESPN, Fox, et al, have witnessed only two notable upsets. Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) turning out “trick” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and the aforementioned Quillin chillin’ by Mr. Jacobs.

LACK OF SUSPENSE & REAL FIGHTING DESIRED

Although I feel boxing is an entertaining, the “fight” and “suspense” in boxing is what folks want to see. That is hard to bring to play when the “favorites” are winning time and again and in less than Marvin Hagler-Tommy Hearns like form. If unbeaten jr. welterweight (140 lb.) Omar Figueroa wants to separate himself from the “pedestrian” performances of others, the Texan has a willing foe in Antonio DeMarco (31-5-1, 23 KOs) from South of The Border.

SAN ANTONIO IS A REAL FIGHT TOWN

Fighting at home in San Antonio, Figueroa (25-0-1, 18 KOs) a 25-year old with considerable skills with entertaining contests and will need to “smoke” former 135 lb. titleholder DeMarco like a New York blunt if he wants to get “over” big on TV. PBC needs a barnburner to get people to think about boxing over the holidays in expectation of PBC, et al boxing 2016. DeMarco, the 14-5 underdog looks a tad slower than Omar.

ARREOLA “LAST CHANCE” TO MAKE STATEMENT

Heavyweight “fringe” contender Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) of Southern California will meet once beaten Travis Kaufman (30-1, 22 KOs) of Reading, PN under Figueroa-DeMarco. Should the Mexican mauler fail, he will be a journeyman/name opponent from now on! PBC Boxing on NBC LIVE at 8:30 PM ET – 5:30 PM PT.

HOLLY HOLM CELEBRATES! RONDA ROUSEY NEEDING DENTURES?

Holm KO 2 Rousey

Holm KO 2 Rousey

San Francisco, CA– A day after Albuquerque, NM turned out in the thousands for hometown hero and UFC bantamweight (135 lb.) champ Holly Holm, honoring the native for her destruction of Ronda Rousey, the loser told ESPN Magazine that the kick “heard round” the world did a lot more than knock her unconscious.

ROUSEY MIGHT NEED MOST OF 2015 OFF!

“It might be three to six months before I can eat an apple, let alone take an impact,” Rousey said. If medical professionals are telling her it’ll be many months until her teeth are ready to bite hard into something, it might be that the air that we heard coming out of the Rousey balloon, (I maybe out on a limb here) but this looks to me like a balloon that cannot be re-inflated.

PETER QUILLIN-DANNY JACOBS NOTES AND ODDS

TV BOXING & “RING TALK” GUESTS THIS WEEKEND

Jacobs-Quillin "Black v. Black" in Black & White

Jacobs-Quillin “Black vs. Black” in Black & White

San Francisco, CAPremier Boxing Champions, also known as Al Haymon Boxing, presents the “Battle of Brooklyn” as middleweight (160 lb.) residents Peter Quillin and Danny Jacobs do battle in a “Loser Leaves Town” match emanating from the City’s Barclays Center. The real “drama” here that trumps any other promotion is that Jacobs is an unlikely participant seeing he was diagnosed with a deadly form of Bone Cancer in 2011.

CANCER SURVIVOR SEEN AS “EASY MARK?”

The 30-1 (27 KOs) Jacobs is a great story. As if the resumption of a boxing career after beating the “Big C” wasn’t enough, his going 8-0 over sometimes pedestrian opposition since the 2012 return put him in the crosshairs of the unbeaten Quillin (32-0-1, 26 KOs) who think Danny, holder of a WBA title belt is an “easy” mark, a speed bump on the way to greatness.

LEE “TOOK THE AIR” OUT OF QUILLIN’S TIRES

When last seen in “prime” time, Quillin flopped in a 12-round draw with Andy Lee, a WBO title fight where he failed to make (try?) the weight (160). Although some are overly impressed with Quillin, I’m not. And while others like Jacobs here, it’s hard to really like “either” guy a lot. While most rate Peter a notch better than Jacobs, Danny is really an unknown commodity. We will know a lot more come Sunday morning. Current betting odds favor Quillin 12-5. As for unbeaten Gennady Golovkin, don’t expect the winner to challenge “Triple G.”

KLITSCHKO WANTS M AY”REMATCH”

Wladimir Klitschko (63-4, 53 KOs) is not taking the loss of the World heavyweight championship to Tyson Fury (25-0, 17 KOs) well. And while going 12 and losing to Fury certainly didn’t have the “smack” that his prior three losses, all KOs before March 2004, losing the title, it hurts.

Steph Curry

Steph Curry

San Francisco, CA- Having watched Tom Brady take the Patriots to another Superbowl, forget Deflate-gate, the dominance of New England is obvious. Those Golden State Warriors, they beat up Labron James, this before going on a tear and breaking the most games won at the start (16-0) of a season. The World Series romp by Kansas City, clearly proved the Royals are the best team in baseball.

$64,000 QUESTION TO FIGHT FANS

Mayweather-Pacquiao Did Not Deliver

Mayweather-Pacquiao Did Not Deliver

That being said boxing fans, what was the “high” point of the 2015 boxing season. Where was the “orgasmic” moment in 2015 boxing? Truth be told, it didn’t exist. Floyd Mayweather pushed his log to 49-0 with points wins over Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto. If a Martian or somebody from another planet that had never seen a fight, sneaked into see the Mayweather-Pacquiao event, he probably would not have came back for the Berto affair.

POWER BROKERS & EGOS “HOLDING” BOXING BACK

There are enough exciting boxers today to put forth a successful program consisting of boxing’s many ethnic groups that could catch on mainstream to an extent. But fans, that means warring factions must come together to make the best fights. Right now, Premier Boxing Champions czar Al Heyman has a good number of fighters under contract. But will his upcoming battles in court with promoters Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya, will that “short circuit” Heyman’s power grab?

AL HAYMON HAS BRONER IN SHOWTIME MAIN EVENT

Adrian "The Problem" Broner

Adrian “The Problem” Broner

San Francisco, CA- According to people in close, ex-lightweight (135 lb.) & welterweight (147) belt-bearer Adrian Broner is matched “tough” with southpaw Хабиб Мевлидинович Аллахвердиев, also known as Khabib Allakhverdiev (19-1, 9 KOs) in a Showtime televised WBA 140 lb. title tilt.

IS THIS WATERLOO FOR CINCINNATI’S BRONER?

Fighting at home in Cincinnati, OH, Broner (30-2, 22 KOs) is probably fighting at his best weight of 140 lbs., this after success at 130, 135 & 147, is coming off a 12 round loss to Sean Porter (26-1-1, 17 KOs) in which Broner dropped the ex-IBF 147 lb. guy in round 12. Should Broner lose a second fight in succession, he might fall out of favor with Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions.

KHABIB COMING OFF LOSS TO VARGAS

Coming into Broner-ville to face the hometown guy, Allakhverdiev is good at a number of things, but not great at any one thing in particular. Good hands, pop on his punches, well conditioned and a good chin means he isn’t coming to lose. With Adrian losing to Porter and Khabib dropping a 12 round close nod to Jessie Vargas (26-1, 19 KOs) last time out in April 2014, both men have something to prove.

SOUTHPAW KHABIB HAS HEIGHT & REACH, BRONER SPEED & POWER

While Khabib Allakhverdiev is the bigger man, “speed kills” in boxing and Adrian is by far the faster of the pair. The problem with “The Problem” Broner is that he has mental lapses and doesn’t fight enough of a round, preferring to try and imitate Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs). Going with Broner here, a slight lean because of Khabib’s 17 months of inactivity and having had but four fights in five years is daunting.

SHOWTIME CO-FEATURE PITS VETERAN VS. “GREEN” GUY

Edner Cherry (34-6-2, 19 KOs) will meet IBF 130 lb. king Jose Pedraza (20-0, 12 KOs). Cherry’s tree has been picked clean, expect unbeaten Pedraza to prevail.

AL HAYMON BOXING “HOT” TONIGHT ON FOX SPORTS

TUESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS CONCEPT EXCELLENT & PROVEN

Javier Fortuna

Javier Fortuna

San Francisco, CA– The Tuesday Night Fights on Fox Sports 1 put together by Al Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions, this production might be the hidden jewell of Al’s Cable TV takeover. People are at home, they’re not having to fork out money, it’s a live show starting at 6 in El Lay and 9 PM in the Big Apple. In the old days of USA’s Tuesday Night Fights, California got the fights on a three hour delay, but in 2015 the Internet takes the luster off that option.

HAYMON PITTING “ONE ISLAND COUNTRY VS. ANOTHER”

Unbeaten Dominican Javier Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KOs) and Puerto Rican Carlos Velasquez (19-1, 13 KOs) will go for 12 rounds or less at 130 lbs. I stress “less” here as the Velasquez on paper appears to be no match for Fortuna, who is held in “high” regards by those who are supposed to know. That being said, the last time the Dominican Republic had a solid fighter was when Joan Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs) looked like the next “Sugar Ray” Leonard until MONEY brought about a lack of discipline that grounded the then streaking rocket. That being said, Fortuna is a 6-1 favorite in this WBA title tiff.

1975 SOUTH CITY CLASS REUNITES 483 MONTHS LATER

483 MONTHS FROM JUNE 1975 GRADUATION DATE

Anthony Peligrino (2014)

Anthony Peligrino (2014)

San Francisco, CA– The 40th reunion of the 1975 South San Francisco High School class was truly a jaunt down memory lane in a number of ways. First off, few people look like they did in high school. One guy whom I photographed for the 1974 yearbook in just his underwear, I didn’t put his face and that snapshot together until late in the evening when I saw the picture on the way out.

MR. PELIGRINO AND MR. ZUEBLER AT THE ELK’S

Twas’ a return to the Elk’s Club, a place I hadn’t been since I was honored by the Northern California Retired Boxers Assn. On that November 2001 evening, my late mother was present and our guest list included South City teachers Mr. Peligrino and Mr. Zuebler. When I took the dais, the first thing I did was ask everybody to, “Please give my mom, Mr. P & Mr. Z a big round of applause.”

PELIGRINO CONVINCED ME I COULD WRITE

Of the near dozen or so awards for my writing, be it a cover story of Essence Magazine or penning for Scotland’s #1 Sunday periodical, the Oakland Trib, the old Examiner, as well as the San Francisco Progress under a pen name while a member of the San Francisco Police Dept., I should have shared the awards and free trips to Japan, Spain, the UK and Hawaii with Anthony Peligrino, because sans Mr. P they would have never happened.

MR. P SAID “WRITE THE STORY” & MR. Z “DIDN’T WANT TO KNOW”

Ali & Pedro Fernandez (1994 China)

Ali & Pedro Fernandez (1994 China)

It was Mr. P who told me that I had a “duty” to expose the SSFHS administrator who was reportedly stopped four times and popped twice within 180 days for Drunk Driving. This was the guy chasing people around campus and disciplining them with impunity. The story begins with me being the Editor of The Warrior and we’re having lunch with Mr. Z in his typing class. Obvious to me, Mr. Zuebler didn’t want anything to do with this and probably wished he wasn’t there when I brought in the police reports.

ENDED UP TELLING MRS. WISNEWSKI OF “E WING”

It was one of the few times in my life where I had to keep a secret, and yet write about it. “Tease the story,” leaking out one drip per issue of the school papers. After two months and people asking, the bomb was dropped and this “Mr. Thirsty” ended up being driven to and from work (SSFHS campus) for a while.

WITH ADMINISTRATOR’S FACE ON FIRE, I THOUGHT “NOTHING OF IT”

There were a number of teachers who supported me, Mr. Jacobs for one. But talk about naive, seeing it was all true, I didn’t think for a second there would be “retaliation” from the “Thirsty” administrator or faculty. E wing’s Mrs. Wisnewski who supported me, I confided in her and she told me to talk to Mr. Peligrino.

REMEMBERING MR. COHEN “EXPECTORATING” IN MY FACE

The one teacher that did lash out at me was Science teacher Mr. Cohen. He gave me additional homework, sent me to Mr. Zaro, made my life hell because we both knew I needed the 5 Science credits to graduate in 12 weeks. Cohen got in my face, spitting as he talked and I shoved him away from my seated position which led to him ousting me.

BILL HUNTER “HAUNTED” BY CLASSES AFTER 1975

For better or worse, I got an extra period off and Bill Hunter, a gem of a counselor who was run off campus (harassed for his perceived sexuality) some years after our graduation, set me up with a Science correspondence course, thus my graduation was a guarantee.

“TOP SHELF” HERB & SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE

Some things change, some don’t. As the jocks sucked down a cocktail or two, the stoners were well represented at the Elk’s, albeit without the participation of the guy (he was there) who first brought Colombian Red to South City. In closing, the last time I saw Frank Verducci and Paul Bachtold, they were hamming it up for the camera at our graduation dance some 483 months ago. Saturday night, there they were, Frank & Paul together again shooting “gag” photographs wearing funny hats. Just like the mighty Stylistics tune of 1975, “Some Things Never Change.” Not the class of ’75. Truly a great evening!

ODDS ON FLOYD MAYWEATHER BOXING AGAIN!

WHEN WILL MAYWEATHER ANNOUNCE THE UN-RETIREMENT?

Floyd "Money" Mayweather

Floyd “Money” Mayweather

San Francisco, CA– While some felt that the retirement speel of Floyd Mayweather was “sincere.” Others were of the opinion that Floyd after making a fortune many times over, enough cash for tens of Mayweather generations to live incredibly well into the 23rd century, that, “enough is enough” and that Floyd will walk away.

FLOYD “USED” THE MEDIA AS A TOOL

The majority of pundits, most of us, including myself, some unwittingly, some not, have been used by Mayweather, because whether you like him or not, Floyd is the “ultimate” shot caller in the fight game. Having used Muhammad Ali-like antics at times, Floyd has done a few Mike Tyson impressions as well during his 18 year tenure in the professional fight game.

FLOYD PROMISED TO QUIT AFTER #49…BUT…

Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao

San Francisco, CA– If Saturday actually was to be the end of the Floyd Mayweather era, it might be worth watching and or celebrating. Fresh off a record payday and his 12-round May spanking of Manny Pacquiao, the 48-0 champion has for the longest said he was getting out after #49. That appears not to be the case as Mayweather is looking at complete “free agency” as the Showtime/CBS deal comes to an end.

MADE SHOWTIME/CBS LOTSA’ MONEY

Initially, Mayweather’s boxing might have been a “loss leader” for the Showtime PPV folks. But the money made on the Mayweather-Pacquiao mismatch was beyond profound, so they are looking at the Mayweather time with them as plus and would love to resign him. HBO PPV, they too, if Floyd is a free agent would probably be interested. And there is the possibility that Floyd going all by himself (Mayweather Promotions) with advisor Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.

BERTO “BIGGER UNDERDOG” THAN BUSTER DOUGLAS

When this match was first announced, the Las Vegas MGM Grand, site of Floyd’s last 12 fights, put Mayweather up at 40-1 over Berto. That means, you bet $4,000 in order to win $100. In the biggest upset in the history of boxing, Mike Tyson was a 38-1 favorite of James “Buster” Douglas. Currently, the Floyd number has dropped to 30-1 and if you want to go with Berto, I’ve seen odds anywhere between 15 & 19-1.

AZ PROMOTER SCOTT MALING SAYS HE IS NO “FLEA”

ARIZONA BOXING PEOPLE “FEELING” HEAT?

Scott Maling

Scott Maling

San Francisco, CA– Today I received a letter from Arizona promoter Scott Maling’s attorney claiming that Maling has “never” fronted for Bob Arum’s Top Rank. In 2005, with promoter/Felon Peter McKinn on a path that would lead to jail, I was told then that Mr. Maling reportedly “filled the void.” He denies this.

PEOPLE ARE JUDGED BY THEIR COMPANY

Mr. Maling was also irked at my calling him, John Montano and McKinn “fleas.” Maybe that was an obvious conclusion to some seeing he attended an Arizona Boxing Commission with Peter McKinn, a Felon convicted of theft, forgery, fraud, filing false police reports, suborning perjury, all the result of McKinn stealing money from a boxer in Arizona.

MCKINN ASKED BOXER TO “BURN DOWN” ACCUSER’S GYM

Ex-Top Rank Felon Peter McKinn

Ex-Top Rank Felon Peter McKinn In Jail

After listening to conversations that were picked up on a police wire, there’s no way you can walk away NOT thinking McKinn is the lowest form of human life. According to ex-boxer Daniel Lerma, (who once boxed for McKinn) he told Phoenix Police that McKinn wanted to hire his brother, “To knock out Joe Diaz. You know, burn his house down, his truck down.” Lerma said he was aware of the $5,000 check that Diaz tried to cash. Lerma says McKinn, “Voided the check and Diaz did not get paid.”

JOE DIAZ’ CAR SHOT UP & GYM WAS BURNED

Trainer Joe Diaz’ joint, the shuttered Top Level Gym in Phoenix was shot up one night, set on fire another, and his vehicle was filled with bullet holes as well. Is that just a coincidence Mr. Maling, sir? You know, McKinn looking to hire people to harm and or possibly kill a feeble old man, torch his place, and then that’s exactly what happened!!! And I’m not saying this flippantly, it is part of the Phoenix Police investigation.
