The bottom line is that the one-year suspension wasn’t enough and it now appears Massa’ Bob Arum, he of the Top Rank plantation, has worked out a deal for Margarito and his trainer Javier Capitello with the California State Athletic Commission. This is all transpiring as Arum wants Margarito to fight underneath Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey in Dallas, TX in late March.

As a boxing fan, I am aghast at the reports that you are about to re-license both Antonio Margarito and Javier Capitello, this after their heinous acts that could have cost Shane Mosley his life. Take a good look at what would have happened had Nazeem Richardson, Shane Mosley’s trainer, not forced a re-wrap of the hand containing the cement-like pad.
Having been a police officer myself, I cannot believe that these men were not charged with Felonies. That alone smacks of a cover up and or a payoff somewhere. California needs to do the right thing and never re-license Antonio Margarito or Javier Capitello.

Definably, Antonio Margarito should be ban for life as the violators before him. Boxing should show NO tolerance for fighter who assault other fighters, risking lives for fame and money. Margarito should never step in a ring again as an example of other cheaters. One year is a slap on the risk and an insult to Boxing and his victims.

So Pacquaio’s under suspicion, rightly or wrongly, and this douche nozzle puts a known cheater on the undercard. Great for the image of everyone involved.
Antonio Margarito should no longer be allowed to box within the United States for his attempt to cheat the system and possibly cause more serious damanage than he already could have caused. This was an egregious act and one deserving of a prison sentence if what he did was indeed true which it was found to be.
Request Antonio Margarito never be allowed to step foot in a sanctioned boxing match ever again. Either as a boxer, or as a trainer.
This man has no business setting foot in a boxing ring ever again. he should be banned for life.

Antonio Margacheato is a disgrace to the sport of boxing. He is definitely guilty of using plaster and knowing about it even if he denies it. I am certain it was not the only time he tried to use it he used it against Miguel Angel Cotto even if there is no proof we fans know the truth. The Clottey-Pacquiao fight is being dubbed “The Event.” It should appropriately be dubbed “The Event of cheaters.” if they allow margarito to ever enter a boxing ring again. If any commission re-licenses him, they pretty much are just saying “Hey everybody, go ahead and cheat because if you do get caught, all you are going to have to do is sit out a year before you can return to work.” “So go ahead Pacquaio, go severely injure Floyd Mayweather and give him brain damage and then if we catch you with PED’s or HGH or EPO in your system after the damage has been done, we’ll just give you a year suspension…” Glamorous!
When you take a close look at the Margarito situation, it just doesnt add up. This fighter never fought like a dirty fighter. Certainly, Margarito is no Luis Resto. Give this guy a chance, just like a chance was given to Trinidad, Mosley, etc, etc.
They need to let him come back so that the world can see how effective he can be without plaster. His come back fights will go a long way into proving that he was cheating.
The evidence around Margacheato is less than convincing. Soft pads 2×2 inches doesn’t equate bricks to me. Ever read the commission’s staements? Not the same thing…Resto had the horsehair padding removed from his gloves and was hitting Collins with his bare fists. Seems to me that both Trinidad and Margacheato were concerned with protecting their knuckles than cheating.
Out of all sports, boxing has one of the highest risk of fatality and boxers know this. When you intentionally load your gloves, it’s no longer just about winning, but about killing. Ban Margarito for life.
amazing that to simply voice your intention to assault someone on the phone is literally deemed assault, but wrapping your hands in plaster and concealing it, only to have it avoided by chance/a careful trainer doesn’t qualify as the same intent. how anyone can stomach the thought of antonio making money off this sport again is beyond me.
He got caught, he served his time, I’m all for second chances. He’s under the microscope, he won’t cheat again. Let’s see if he can still bang. I think they should put Margarito vs Cotto on that card. Let’s see Cotto get some payback.

I just read that Antonio Margarito would be licensed to fight in your State soon. Are you kidding? The man committed a crime. A CRIME and you’re about to license him to fight? How much was he fined? Anyone know any info on this? I am not sure if they should let him fight again…criminal charges should have been in order here. I am not sure if a one year suspension is sufficient punishment. Maybe if he had to pay a heavy fine then maybe(a big Maybe) if he should be allowed to be reinstated. When you consider Lewis was banned for life as well as Resto then one might conclude Margarito deserves a similar fate. Fortunately for both parties in this case Nazim caught the pads before the fight…it doesn’t change the issue of intent, but if you murdered somebody the penalty would be more severe than attempted murder and I feel that is the case here. Not saying he shouldn’t receive further punishment, but that’s his only real defense.

Margacrisco should never fight again. Those who entertain the idea that the plaster was the work of his trainer alone, think twice, use your head. Impossible not to notice that in your fists.
Furthermore, if the trainer was the only criminal in this act (and this is not the case), Margacrisco would have filed a demand against him asking for damages. Under that scenario, Margacrisco would have been deprived of his way of living, his job, by the negligence of his trainer. Of course, Margacrisco never sued his trainer, nor did Arum. Does it ring a bell for you?
What f*cked up timing way to put an undercard with Cheato in it. I’m with somebody above…I’d love to see Cotto get his hands on that fool with no funny business, but after that beating from Pac, it’s hard to say how much he has left in the tank at this point…If Cheato can bust up Cotto to the same effect in a rematch, then maybe in weird twisted sense, he can prove a point? Taking out the padding like in the Resto/Collins fight IMO seems to be beyond what Cheato and his trainer did.
Margarito was caught intending to commit a crime, so technically speaking, he didnt actually commit a crime. we can speculate all we want about his previous fights, the truth of the matter is, there is no proof.
I think 1 year suspenssion fits the intention of a crime. give the guy a chance to redeem him self. If he fights again and is uncapable of knocking out opponents and receives a beating in the procces, let that be his true punisment.

Marg isn’t required to go to CA to get his license back. He can apply in another state–in this case, TX. Bob Arum told Ricardo Lois in an interview that that’s what Marg was going to do. I agree that his cheating ass should be banned for life, but efforts should be concentrated on TX, not CA.

I think they all cheat one way or another margarito without a doubt is a great boxer. he deserves a second chance i remenber when fernando vargas used steroid for the de la hoya fight dint seem to be that big of a deal. mosley also used steroids. pacquiao is being accused does it mean hes done it NO. margarito is one of the few fighters that come to fight and not run like those other ppv fighter do. in the end he will continue to fight and for all those that dont want him to, just dont watch his fights.

Antonio Margarito and his trainer Javier Capitello should be banned from the sport of boxing for LIFE by every commission in the United States. Any respectful promoter should avoid any relationship with Margarito or his trainer. Remorse for being caught, and the inability to admit transgressions is the basis for my position. If Margarito did not know what was going onto his hands then he is guilty by ignorance and complicit in the crime. It is HIS responsibility to follow the rules, not the responsibility of a commission or apposing fighters camp to catch him. Although it is unlikely Margarito would ever repeat his mistake, he should not be given that opportunity.

I don’t wish to hand Antonio Margarito a gift wrapped civil lawsuit victory in response to such a penalty.
I think that this whole motion is being perused purely by emotion and very little by way of critical thought.
Like it or not… Margarito never so much as hit an opponent with an illegally wrapped hand… So far as can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Mike Tyson bit of a human being’s ear in front of the entire world and was convicted of said event… Tyson received a one year suspension and a monetary fine… You ban Margarito from ever fighting again, you may as well open the doors to Fort Knox and give him a duffle bag because that is what Margarito will win in a civil lawsuit.

I believe that both Margarito and Capitello should have been arrested following the Mosley contest. After the casting had been positively identified and that both should have been charged with Felonies.
Beside he was caught before the fight, is no proof that he ever use loaded gloves before.
Jack: CA and TX aren’t Nevada (where Tyson/Holy took place) or D.C. or TN (the other places he fought after that fiasco–let me know if I’m missing an American city here). Should have no impact on what CA or TX decides to do. Fact (not speculation) is that Marg would’ve gone in to the ring with the loaded gloves had Richardson not caught him. And this wasn’t a wrap dispute (“take some tape off…”). Those have happened many times–including with Arguello (v. Costello).
Margaputo should be banned for life! cheating in a sport like boxing is the worst possible thing you can do to the other guy. He tried it and got caught against Mosley and got under the radar against Cotto. Ban the cheater for life and demote him to being Salvadoran!

You know he was going to go into the ring with them, I know it too… But the facts are that he didn’t.
Margarito was the guy with the loaded weapon that everyone knows he was going to use… He got caught before he ‘pulled the trigger’ so it is a different thing. You can charge him with INTENT all day long but you aren’t going to make anything beyond INTENT stick and based upon past precedent… INTENT isn’t going to get this guy more than the slap on the wrist… AKA the suspension he has since served.
And don’t expect other states to find some other higher ground on this issue. They won’t.

Margarito should not be allowed to fight ever again. I was a huge fan of the man, but if your suspicious of an illegal act you should give in to proper tests (ie Manny Pacquiao) or if you’re guilty of an illegal act, you should be banned for life. Magarito should never lace them up as a pro again. He ended the career of Miguel Cotto. Cotto was never the same after that fight.

A) Margarito SHOULD be banned for life. He knowingly put plaster in his gloves and fully intended on using them to destroy Shane Mosley’s body
B) For those, like Jack Dunne, who are completely missing the point of the ban, I have one question: If you get caught trying to cheat at your job, you might not get arrested, but will not get fired? They are not going to give you a suspension for a year and then let you come back.
Say Margarito worked at a bank, and one night on his way to the vault the security guard catches his ass red-handed with a drill, a couple of bags, and whatever the hell else you use to break into a vault, you think that bank is going to let him come back to work there?

Good point AJ, ban all those guilty of an illegal act. They should ban Rito and all those caught using performance enhancing drugs as well. Also get rid of the commission inspectors who approved Rito’s hand wraps. Like little Floyd said he shouldn’t have to risk his life against other fighters on PEDs.

Margarito does not work at a bank. He is a professional prize fighter. He is a professional prize fighter who was caught with Plaster of Paris in his hand wraps. Something that unfortunately HAS happened before and truly unfortunately, came at the peril of brave young men being beaten to a pulp with said substance in their wrappings… Something, thankfully Shane Mosley was not subjected to that night.
However there are established guidelines for punishment among state commissions for this “type” of situation… None of which has involved a lifetime ban… Unless I am mistaken and someone can show me otherwise.
And unlike ME getting caught “cheating” at my job… You are missing the point and don’t understand the situation…
If I overstay a break, that is “cheating at my job”. If while I’m on the job, I step away from my duties and try to pistol whip or hit you over the head with a glass bottle you only to be stopped by… Nazim Richardson… Before I get to you… That is called Assault with a Deadly Weapon and is clearly covered in California under Penal Code 254(a)(1)… And I would be charged just as sure as you are reading this.

between the proven instance with Shane, and the pretty damning photo evidence of his hand taken after the Cotto fight….he should be banned. the attempt to cheat, the attempt to maim is a legitimate crime in a court of law. it should suffice to ban him here. I will not pay for nor support ANY PPV with Margarito on it. As fans, in the absence of a ban, if you love the sport, you must use your power as a consumer/buyer to boycott Margarito.
as for not banning him….last time I checked, Resto and Panama were banned. Hell Panama got in trouble for a “suspicious” bottle he mixed….we’re talking about attempting, doing everything in your power to enter in a prizefight with loaded gloves.
I’m not a fan of Margarito especially now, but I will still give hime the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t know. Everytime I’ve ever seen a fighter get their hands wrapped they are never paying attention. I think its a given his trainer knew and should be banned, but their is a chance however small it is that Margarito did not know. As long as theres even a glimmer of a chance that he didn’t know then he deserves to still make a living fighting. Any other mess ups, he should be done. Either way, I think he’s done. What elite fighter will fight him? Mosley won’t ever fight him again he already beat him, Cotto had gone on record multiple times saying he won’t fight him, Mayweather would never, Berto would never,so who else is there. It doesn’t matter if he gets reinstated or not, I don’t think he will ever get a big payday or meaning ful fight again.

Margarito has brought shame to the fight game. He and his trainer know exactly what is involved wrapping hands before a fight. This is done 100 times while sparring and fighting. After the Luis Resto tragedy, any fighter or trainer that comes close to intentionally inflicting severe damage on an opponent with a hidden substance is like someone hitting you in the face with brass knuckles. He should be banned permanently. All the crooked folks like his trainer and Panama Lewis should find other jobs that are decent and require hard labor. And, the butt kicking he recieved by Shane Mosley only proves Margarito cannot fight at the elite level. He is journeyman fighter.
I wish he never fights again, but he will. A crime was about to occur but was stop before it happened. Because the intent was there, they were banned. I believe with all my heart that his hands were loaded when he beat down Cotto. A criminal commits a crime, serves his time and is able to get on with his life!!! At best, his failure to supervise his corner either put boxer on mortal danger or could have(Mosley). At worst he put his own personal gain against the life of a fellow athlete by cheating by loading the gloves – an unforgivable act on boxing.

Margarito should never be allowed fight again. It was a disgraceful act, and even though Cotto had his face torn up it was nowhere near as bad as Billy Collins’ after the Resto fight. I enjoyed seeing Sugar Shane rip the cheating rat apart but really don’t think he should ever be let fight professionally again, though the prospect of seeing him get pummelled again is a nice thought. He is a bigger cheat than Thierry Henry and a disgrace to the sport.
