San Francisco, CA- This was essentially a title eliminator for the WBC 147 lb. (welterweight) title, Roberto Duran, the recognized lightweight (135) champion for years, vs former WBC titleholder Carlos Palamino at Madison Square Garden under World heavyweight champion Larry Holmes‘ TKO 12 Mike Weaver on June 22, 1979.

Palamino retired and came back in 1997 & 1998, almost 20 years later and went 4-1 before losing to Wilfredo Rivera. Duran would have three more wins before defeating Leonard in one of the greatest battles of pugilistic will ever via Unanimous Decision 15 on June 20, 1980.


Palamino lost the WBC belt to Wilfredo Benitez in 1978 who dropped the title to Leonard (TKO 15) in November 1979.
