RDA STOPS CERRONE IN 66 SECONDS
BRAZILIAN BEATS THE BUDWEISER OUT OF “COWBOY”
Los Angeles, CA- UFC lightweight (155) champion Rafael Dos Anjos (25-7) continued his impressive streak with a 66 second demolition of Donald Cerrone (28-7) and the challenger’s 8-fight win streak. Dos Anjos hurt Cerrone to the body early and piled on the attack. Cerrone continued his habit of choking in the biggest fights, as he let the rematch slip away from him easily. It will be a long road back to the title for Donald. RDA may have a date with featherweight (145) king Conor McGregor (19-2) in the near future.
HOW DOES RDA FAIR AGAINST CONOR?
The main vulnerability Conor McGregor has shown thus far is his grappling. He has lost twice, and both Ls came by submission. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the strengths of the lightweight champion. I am not so sure the UFC risks their biggest star against a guy with very little marketablity. Conor always has a puncher’s chance, but RDA is a tough out for anyone in or around that division right now.
ROIDLESS REEM STOPS DOS SANTOS
Alistair Overeem (40-14, 1 NC) displayed some much-needed patience versus former heavyweight (265) champ Junior Dos Santos (17-4). After a timid first round, Overeem dropped Junior with a hook and followed up with some hammer fists to his chrome dome. Time was 4:43 of round2. Still do not think Reem has the chin to bang with the elite heavies, but he is speeding closer to a crack at the belt.
NATE DIAZ MAKES SUCCESSFUL RETURN
Lightweight Nate Diaz (18-10) of Stockton, CA won a unanimous nod over three against Michael Johnson (16-10) in what was a minor upset. Diaz showed very crisp striking and repeatedly tagged Johnson with jabs followed by straight rights to the cranium. It was a very nice performance by Diaz, but one in which his face got busted up in the last 15 seconds. I would love to see him take on McGregor, who he called out in a hilarious expletive-laden interview on national television just moments after the cards were read. You want a big fight? It doesn’t get much bigger than two great self-promoters with fan-friendly styles squaring off. UFC on FOX 17 was a win for Zuffa overall.
