NONITO DONAIRE IS PHILIPPINES’ MOST EXCITING LITTLE FIGHTER!
July 11th, 2010 By Frances Martel
“FIGHT CHICK” THINKS NONITO IS THE “ENTIRE PACKAGE”
Union City, NJ- Wimbledon, the World Cup, the Sarah Palin LeBron James one-hour non-special— boxing has had a lot of competition in the sports world in the past month, and the only real news story that has managed to permeate the mainstream from our world is the fact that our pound-for-pound best fighter has all but abandoned the sport for a career in politics. But under the radar lies the fact that Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) has a major challenge for the top title from a compatriot whose major career-ending victories have fallen comparatively under the radar: Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs).
DONAIRE IS A FIGHTER’S FIGHTER
He doesn’t make movies, he has never pretended to have a good singing voice, and he certainly doesn’t have anything remotely resembling a political career. He is simply a boxer— fighting is his passion and he devotes all his resources to that which he does best. And it has paid off in an extravagantly successful career against top opponents like Raul Martinez (27-1, 16 KOs), Rafael Concepcion (14-4-1, 8 KOs), and the biggest feather in his cap, Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs).
REMEMBER VIC DARCHINYAN? DONAIRE STOPPED HIM COLD
Three years ago, Darchinyan was the biggest name in his division, and managed to break through the popularity gap between tiny bantamweights like himself and the welters and, at some point in history, heavyweights that typically dominate the sport’s culture. He was big, and only growing, using his extremely unique style to climb over the the bodies of Jorge Arce (54-6-1, 41 KOs), Victor Burgos (39-15-3, 23 KOs), and Nonito’s older brother, Glenn Donaire (17-4-1, 9 KOs). Nonito swiftly ended this meteoric rise in what has so far appeared to be permanent fashion. True, Darchinyan still holds a couple of major belts, and Nonito Donaire has moved far and beyond this three-year-old tale. But it is worth repeating because it shows the magnitude of his achievements—to put a rising star permanently under commission— and, next to someone like Pacquiao, who made a career of fighting people who should have retired a long time ago, shines even brighter.
MARQUEZ ONLY HAD A CHANCE WHEN DONAIRE WAS FIGHTING SOUTHPAW
If you needed proof in 2010 that Donaire is still technically one of, if not the most, dominant figure in boxing, look no further than his battle with Hernan Marquez (27-0, 20 KOs) last night on Showtime. Marquez, with a respectable record for a 21-year-old, did some significant damage on the cards in the first few rounds, and if you thought the fight was unnaturally close for a while, you’re right: Donaire was fighting as a southpaw. As soon as he went back to his natural stance, Marquez was on the canvas, but got up to make it a fight until the eighth round, when the referee stopped the fight.
WHY DON’T FANS LIKE THE LITTLE GUYS (AND GIRLS)?
There aren’t really many people in his division against which Donaire still has to prove himself; it’s clear he is one of, if not the best, at what he does and where he does it. And, truly, this victory is only the cherry on top of a long, fruitful career that hasn’t made front pages based solely on the long-time arbitrary distaste boxing fans seem to have for the lower weight classes. While certain extremely unimpressive heavyweights (ahem, all of them) continue to make it to the top of the boxing publicity game with not one thriller to their name, smaller men like Donaire are the victims of the simple fact that boxing fans randomly don’t care about them. It’s time to give credit where credit is due on this one, and put Donaire on the fast track to a superstardom that has eluded him for no other reason than that fans and the media haven’t wanted to give him what’s rightfully his.

You don’t like the Pacman much do you?
Anyways, Donaire is great and all but he needs to step up his opponent selection.
Strongly agree
Nonito Donaire has to fight bigger and better fighter for him to prove he is one of the best. Don’t ne a Mayweather’s shadow of cherry picking his fight. His last fight was better than his other fights the only complaints i had was he is still fighting smaller fighter and brags about it. He does not have any rights in bragging his prowess unless he foghts those nbetter and bigger fighter.End of the story.
pardon the typos.
its long been a while when nonito goes back to the ring, and until now, he was not yet given a good break. the reason is simple, his promoter muddled his career. You guys give nonito a fight he and his fans deserves. a return bout to vic darchinyan and a title fight against montiel is what his fans like to watch..
Well said, as usual, Ms. Martel!
This is long overdue… Bob Arum and Top Rank should give Nonito Donaire the good breaks he rightfully deserves both on exposures and renumeration. Why waste talents when they are at their best moments?
he should leave top rank and join gbp. bob arum is not pushing big fights for him. he’s wasting his time in top rank.
Nonito Donaire is an exceptional fighter at his division. A pure tactician, gifted with power on both hands and can see where the punch coming from. I believe he can go further and surpass Darchinyan’s achievements. Only uncle Bob knows when to throw Donaire to stardom. Let him fight every 3 mos. uncle Bob and you will see the difference. I am your fan, so GO GO GO NONITO.
Nice one, Donaire become a good accessory to hit back pacquiao in your article, why making donaire as your subject while your motive is to downgrade pacquiao? what he wants to do is not our business!
Kudos to that big win of my kababayan! Magnificent move and agility was the reason behind the rampage……..
Frances,
Donaire is really good and almost a complete package style-wise. What irritates is the manner you get that point across with the subtle way of downgrading his Philipino compatriot Pacquiao i.e. quality of opponent, singing, political ambitions. Do you really have to do that to prove a point? Why do you need to stir this kind of controversy? I find it disgusting.
1.next to someone like Pacquiao, who made a career of fighting people who should have retired a long time ago.
>>i think you’re an idiot!you’re one of those anti-pacmaniacs out there who try to devoid all that pacman has done for boxing and boxing fans alike.
2.He doesn’t make movies, he has never pretended to have a good singing voice, and he certainly doesn’t have anything remotely resembling a political career.
>>that’s called passion you moron!if you like something and you strive for that something than you get that something even though you’re not good at that.yes pacman may have sub par singing voice unlike great singers such as MJ,and sub par acting unlike holywood greats richard denero.he may be a school drop out and doesn’t have the IQ of those political names who have built dynasties, but atleast he tries his best in fulfilling these passion of his.and for your information,he just passed his first bill in congress last week.
3.Hernan Marquez (27-0, 20 KOs)
>>this proves that you have no knowledge on boxing. HM’s record already comes with 1 loss,a decision loss, which came from the hands of richie mepranum
that’s all imbecile!
I don’t know what you Frances Martel have against Manny. Have you tried to seduce Pacman and you were turned down? You have been downgrading him for so long now?
How could you say that Manny made a career fighting people who should have been retired long time ago. Before Manny fought Marco Antonio Barrera (First Fight), Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey they were regarded as the top fighters or one of the top fighters in their divisions by most of the so called boxing experts. Even a lesser foe like David Diaz was the WBC Lightweight champion at the time Manny fought him. Even Oscar dela Hoya was still very respected and regarded as “still a very competitive” fighter before he fought Manny. The so called boxing experts even told before the fight that the midget Pacman does not stand a chance against ODLH and they called the fight a circus and a farce. All them were still looking far ahead of their boxing careers before they fought Manny. Some of them only decided to retire after fighting Manny and some continued even getting another win or a new championship belt. SO WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT MANNY FIGHTING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN RETIRED LONG TIME AGO??? Are you saying that if Manny fights Floyd Jr. and defeats him he should also been retired long time ago? Well I don’t think Manny needs to fight him to make him retire. Because Floyd Jr. is already considering retiring again instead of fighting Manny.
I like Donaire very much. He is a very intelligent and exciting fighter. But I don’t think you have done your homework here. Nonito also sings, acts and dances on TV same as Pacquiao. He has guested regularly in so many Philippine TV shows such as Celebtrity Duet, SOP Concert TV and Show Me The Manny and several other TV shows. You don’t see anything wrong about that while you take it against Manny for doing the same things. The only thing Nonito has not done yet is to enter politics. First is because he is still too young to do that and second is he maybe 100% Filipino in birth place and in blood but he is a dual citizen. He is an American citizen aside from being a Filipino, which could be an issue if he enters Philippine politics. By the way is there anything wrong about athletes entering politics if their goal is to help more people? Doctors, Actors, Engineers and other people who are still active in their chosen professions enter politics. Why not boxers like Manny Pacquiao?
Your bias is very obvious. If you don’t like Manny that’s fine but do not discredit his achievements by your baseless and brainless claims. By the way Nonito is also big in the Philippines the fans love him and follow him too. Even his wife is a celebrity in the Philippines.
nonito has been in shows in the philippines and has sang in celebrity events over there. he has a better voice than pacquiao and that’s for certain
Donaire is the next best fighter in the world after Pacman. He is a complete package. Unlike Floyd, he does not duck anybody and Bob Arum should start spending more money to get a championship fight for him at 118.
Donaire is not a small guy at 5’7″. With proper physical conditioning/training, he could go as far as lightweight or maybe Jr. Welter like Manny who is only 5’6 1/2″. Granting he does not carry his power, he is sleek enough to fight at Jr. Welter.
Well its time to give importance to those on lower weights like nonito donaire he is a very exciting fighter like pacman who came up from the lower weights. I think smaller fighter has better capabilty and exciting to watch than those in higher weights.
truly said. give him roach and all his attention he’LL BE THE NEXT IF NOT BETTER PACQUIAO
Donaire maybe technically better than Pacquiao as a boxer. And he is exciting but Pacquiao is more exciting. That is why we always wait for his next exciting fight with a good opponent. Donaire will become more exciting if he will an elite boxer like Darchinyan (again), Montiel and other very good fighters. Not like the opponents he’s been fighting lately.
Obviously, Your anti-Pacquiao bias is very evident when you write Donaire is the most exciting little fighter.
Donaire sings on TV. He has acted on TV shows. He would be in movies if given the opportunity. He is political. So?
Simply the best. His reflexes is awful. The timing is perfect. When he says you cannot hit what you cannot see, its just the plain truth. I enjoy watching this kid. Superb.
Not to take anything away from Nonito, but he DID take part in “Celebrity Duets” and appeared in Manny’s sitcom in a number of episodes. This writer has put down Pacquiao in the past and now didn’t even bother to do her homework in the process.
Donaire Jr. IS a great fighter but this “Fight Chick” is NOT a great writer.

I agree with the writer that Nonito Donaire is an exciting fighter but not necessarily THE most exciting fighter, above that of what Manny Pacquiao is. My only conceren is that if he tries to imitate Hagler, using left-handed stance, vice versa; what we gathered from his interview after the Marquez fight. Please, don’t let him attempt to experiment with Darchinyan, or for that matter, Montiel, or he and all of us, his fans, will be sorry. The first four rounds of his fight with Marquez, found him an easy target – his face showed what I am talking about.
Good job. Hope he’ll be fighting big names sooner than later.
who calls the shots, that’s the question.
the boxing world is also business, the moneymakers sprinkle a little dough here and there and some fighters shine if the crumbs fall on their laps. and nonito is not one of them. at least, as of yet. who knows in a little while these moneymakers take notice and nonito will be given “the breakthrough”.
we in the philippines hope for the best for donaire.
we are also proud of him, like we do with pacman.
nonito should just continue fighting anybody if the names won’t step up.
i like lambanog not martell
donaire is the real deal !! he can fight and he definitely can talk.. arum should focus on him now because i can see him becoming bigger than pacquiao.. this kid is the total package!!! brains..looks..guts
next to someone like Pacquiao, who made a career of fighting people who should have retired a long time ago, shines even brighter. Are you insa???
Can you answer the following:
1. Did you know that Lebwada was Champion when Pacquiao put him in the canvas?
2. Did you know that Barrera was Champion when Pacquiao put him in the canvas? and still barrera is fighting…
3. Did you know that Morales was Champion when Pacquiao put him in the canvas?
4. Did you know that Marquez was Champion when Pacquiao put him in the canvas 4x?
5. Did you know that Hatton was Champion and undefeated at 140 lb when Pacquiao put him in the canvas in two rounds?
6. Did you know that Cotto was Champion when Pacquiao put him in the canvas?
7. Did you know that Diaz was Champion when Pacquiao put him in the canvas?
8. Did you know that Oscar was like Champion only one point split decision lost to Mayweather and also won another fight before when Pacquiao put him in retirement and humiliated?
Now who among the above fighter that should be and who should have retired a long time ago as you had trying to discredit Pacquiao achievement?
kamandag99 quote:
“Donaire Jr. IS a great fighter but this “Fight Chick” is NOT a great writer.”
Now that’s funny.
I worked for Pacman and Frances is so desperately seeking attention from the Pacman. Sorry to tell you the TRUTH hurts, but Pacman is just way way above your paygrade/quality. Fortunately for you, I’m willing to give you the attention you need. You won’t regret it, Frances, just call me when you’re ready.
ringtalk.com should change it’s name to wehatepacquiao.com. donaire dabbles in other things as well just like pac, and there are interviews where he says no one works as hard as pac in the gym.
Nonito is one of those special fighters who is a pleasure to watch on account of his style. The fact that he can punch with concussive power and lightning speed are added bonuses! I’m just worried that if he gains too much weight the changes to his body will affect his style.
I believe that nonito will carry the whole filipinos on his shoulders everytime he steps in the ring when Manny retires.!! He’s the best that we have right now!
blame it on bob arum for not giving him a good opponent… maybe his style is not exciting for a promoter!
Actually Morales was not a champion he lost to MAB the fight before. Hatton wasn’t a champion he was just considered the best in a weak division, before the rise of bradley, maidana, alexander, ortiz, khan but he actually didn’t hold a title (unless u count the famous IBO as a world championship.) David diaz shouldn’t have been a champion ever. If delahoya beats mayweather at 154 no way he drains himself to fight pac at 147 cuz delahoya would have still been the draw in boxing. Marquez was a champion in there second fight not the first pac was remember he took MAB’s title. Being a champion doesnt mean anything nowadays anyway. Cotto has been champ twice at 147 and they were both vacant titles, Quintana and Jennings. I like pac he is a beast but i cant stand the way people make him out to be the best ever. back in the day at 147 hagler, hearns, duran kill him. Clottey landed two punches and had his faced all bruised up. Pac hits hard but a lot of fighters go the distance against him. Donaire vs perez/mares/montiel/hasegawa= great fights and show what he is made of.
Frances,
While I enjoy watching Nonito and think he is a good fighter that may be great once he fights some more upper echelon guys I don’t consider him to be as exciting as the Pac man. Having seen Manny live the guy is just amazing. Once he decides to turn it on his fists become a blaze. I have seen Floyd live too and I’m not even sure he can match Manny’s fast twitch muscle speed. I’m dying to know though. I think you should just be honest and write a column on why you despise Manny. There must be something you hate about the guy. What I don’t know. He is the only thing sparking boxing interest and the only real superstar in boxing. Floyd is too but I think Manny is a bigger star internationally.
Donaire is “the entire package” hu?? The two last fights have been with two little boys and yes they seemed like talented little guys but way smaller than this bully (oh I forgot it’s not him that makes decisions it’s his promoter). Donaire got hit left and right by this little man Marquez just look at his face after the fight, I can just imagine the beating he’ll take if a fight with Fernando Montiel ever comes to frutition which I doubt his next opponent will probably be against a good little 108 pounder. C’mon man up already and stop f*&*ing around!!
Nonito is a very mental type of boxer, a unique blend of pinoy flexibility and swiftness plus the analytical mind of someone who grew up in the West. check out this latest vid of Smity with donaire in YT just uploaded this week. Donaire shares insights on what makes his boxing a work of art.
I like Pacquiao, but I like Donaire better. Congratulations Nonito.
Why did Nonito Donaire hook up with Victor Conte, the guy involve in drug use controversy himself? I know he is a sponsor of Ringtalk radio show but I just feel if a lot of people wanted to ban Magarito for life for cheating….this guy Vic Conte is even worse offender than Margarito as he is the BALCO head. The company that make those Performance enhancing drugs that the athletes used illegally. And here is making a lot of money but with a blood/drugs on his hands and no one seems to care.
Nonito is using SNAC products, I am, my entire radio crew is, my friends are, my buddies that fight are taking it. Victor did his thing and now he’s trying to give back. Sponsoring fighters, amateur clubs, MMA schools, man give the guy a break!
Donaire is always wanted to fight those bigger figther out there like (Montiel)but no one stand in front of him! Now why should blame him if everyone else is afraid of him!!! Nonito more power to you stay humble and keep the uppercut always work more powerful and effective all the time that’s your the best weapon up there in the ring…
Pedro, what punishment did he (Vic Vonte) receive for his wrongdoings? Margarito and his family were deprive of their source of livelihood for a year or more now. And yet lots of people wants him ban permanently for an attempted cheating.
Look at Mosely, a proven cheater and he consumated his cheating (while Margarito attempted cheating but was prevented). Mosely was never punished for illegal drug use either.
Who says life is fair?
to all Donaire fan’s, you all dreaming that he will be next pacman
Hi frances. Be careful. Hatred sometimes result in high blood pressure and constipation, he he he. I think you and Floyd have the same disease – ENVY. Both of you are envious of Pacman. You hate and hate when there is absolutely nothing to hate. But I think I am wrong. It is not hate but ENVY.
I think Nonito will also be accused of using PED when he beats big names up to featherweight and most likely even lightweights; like Rafael Marquez, Juanma Lopez, Vasquez Jr, Chris John, etc. Only Mayweather doesnt use PED’s
Frances wrote “someone like Pacquiao, who made a career of fighting people who should have retired a long time ago”
LOL. You really had to write it, eh?
I remember one time in a forum I challenged all people who said that Pacquiao would be CLOBBERED and PATHETICALLY PUT TO CANVASS by Hatton and Cotto to acknowledge Pacquiao as the best boxer if he wins his fight against the two bigger, stronger champions. They told me “Are you crazy? You’ll pit the one-dimentional fighter like Pacquiao against Cotto and Hatton? You know nothing about boxing.” They’d been telling me these because they said Pacquiao was just lucky because Dela Hoya is a shot fighter.
When Pacquiao proved them wrong, NOBODY ever brought up the subject of who is the best pound for pound boxer again in the forum.
Every boxer that Pacquiao defeated SUDDENLY became a “shot, old, past-his-prime, etc”
Funny ignoramus and non-believers.
TT
if pac cannot ko duran & hagler, i think he will win by points, he is the faster guy among the 3, and also his punching power is almost equal to them. hearns may beat pac cuase he is tall, but if pac lands one like he did against hatton, hearns, known for his glass chin will get ktfo. clottey is one tough hombre, just ask margarito, judah, even the late diego coralles was beaten black & blue by clottey.
dencio,
your opinions are not based on anything other than loving Pacman. This blog is a display of historical ignorance.
it may seem like ms martel is a pac-hater but i honestly think that its just a ploy to generate readership for her articles..
just look at how many comments she got for this story..
you guys wont probably even recognize ms martel’s name had she not packaged herself like a pac-hater that she has so cunningly appears to be..she cant even get her facts straight for a simple story such as this..
so while all of you continue to read her articles and post your hate blogs against her, ms martel and mr fernandez will continue to rake in the cash..
The hatred from this poor writer is very obvious. She pretended to write about Nonito but her real motive is to downgrade the achievements of Manny. Oh that is so low… very very low just like her IQ. She does not even have the slightest idea that Nonito is also a TV star in the Philippines who does exactly the same thing that Manny does and more. While Manny sings and acts Nonito sings, acts and dances. Somehow I agree with this very envy bitch that Nonito is exciting and the Philippines is very proud of him too but the way she maneuvered her piece to blast Manny only shows the overflowing hatred and envy of this dimwit of a writer on the Pacman.
research more my friend…
but you are right nonito is great.
and moreover that, pacquiao and donaire haven’t the same style but they are sooooooo awesome!!!
whenever i see the flash nonito fighting…i see a fusion of pacquiao-mayweather style and stance…
pacquiao – southpaw
mayweather – orthodox
Yes, Pacquiao fans made this website click. And Pac-haters like Ms. Martel and Pedro should be thankful to them….
Dencio,
Pac doesn’t hit as hard as you think at 147. Other than knocking out Cotto at 145 who else has he hurt. Never had Clottey hurt and he never even got De la hoya off the ground he was just washed up and for some reason couldn’t throw a punch. Sorry Pac doesnt beat any of those guys. I forgot to mention Sugar ray leonard, moseley, trininidad, de la hoya all beat him at 147 in there primes of course. Y fight Cotto? To claim another title wow why not Berto or any other 147 legit fighter. He is a crybaby like mayweather. He had one fight at 135 and one at 140. I’ll be more impressed if he beats bradley or alexander at 140 than beating cotto again. Maybe he can win an actual title by beating a champion at 140 instead of claiming one. Like I stated many times Pac never won a title at 140. Hatton didn’t have a belt. HELLO PEOPLE!
Fight chick knows deep inside her boy Gayweather will never grow the balls to step into the ring with the Pacman.
TT, Hatton was the linear champion at 140…some of you guys hatred toward Pacquaio is so unwarranted. The guy beat Barerra(he was a 3-1 underdog). Beat Marquez arguably twice(I don’t care what anyone says, the fights were close but the guy that was knocked down four times in the two fights deserved to lose), destroyed Oscar when most thought he would get killed. Beat Cotto down, when people thought it would be competitive. dominated Clottey in every round even though he was viewed as a worthy challenger. Toyed with David Diaz for 9 rounds before knocking him cold in his first fight at 135. The guy deserves credit…give it to him. Donaire deserves his credit as well, extremely gifted and unfortunately there just isn’t any fighters with name value at 115 besides Darchinyan who won’t fight him. Donaire would just continue to stay active, those other fighters need him to get a decent payday as well. At the end of the day when the guy is winning most of his fights and scaling weights to do it whatever circumstances that ocurred are pointless to bring up. he won the fights and thats all that people will remember years from now, not all of your bs reason that I hear being brought up by knuckleheads(Oscar was drained, Cotto had to fight at 145, hatton had already lost to Floyd). Can’t thwe guy just get credit for winning the fights?albeit impressivlely
“He doesn’t make movies, he has never pretended to have a good singing voice, and he certainly doesn’t have anything remotely resembling a political career. He is simply a boxer— fighting is his passion and he devotes all his resources to that which he does best.” Did you know those two sentences make Pacman look like Superman!!……WOW
By the way Donaire is ok in my book!!
Your write-up about Nonito Donaire is good but dishing Pacquiao is another story and way off-course and on the verge of being IDIOTIC. Way more idiotic is calling yourself a “FIGHT CHICK” BWAHAHAHAA.
TT
when i say that pac can beat duran, hagler, MAYBE hearns & leonard, i’m thinking 140, sorry i did not mention that, look, we all know that pac/pbf vs 4 horsemen of the 80′s will not happen, we are just stating our thoughts/opinions, so when i say that pac can beat those guys, i didnt mean he will beat them, my point is, pac has a chance against all of those guys. anything can happen in boxing. one lucky punch & the fight is over. so, the way pac throws those punches in bunches, he may have a chance at landing one lucky puch. but you, the way you analyze it, you are 100% sure that pac will not win against any of those guys
PEDRO,
maybe the reason your not a policeman anymore is that you have this habbit of making people prove their innocence rather than you proving their guilt. you always use the line “suspected use of….”, but to you, unless pac submit to blood testing, he is already guilty.
TT I think u realy are crazy man. And when did hagler fight at 147?????? Dencio I think better of u kid. To put pacman in a ring with hagler, everbody involved should be tried and convicted of 1st degree murder. Hagler would realy kill pacman. U people realy are lost. Pacman or Floyd wouldn’t be able to compete with those dudes from the 80′s look at tape of Leonard he was faster than Floyd or PAC. A true welter with heart and power same for hearns and duran these people were true pros not like today. U people need to stop commiting boxing blasphemy by comparing PAC to these guys or try to imagine them in a ring together.
100% agree!
hits
Most people thought he would get killed by dlh but let’s not forget roach trained dlh so he knew he was shot. I’m not saying pac didn’t beat marquez I thought pac won the first fight and marquez edged him out the second. I have no problem with pac getting the nod I’m just more impressed with what marquez did in the second fight. Roach and Arum both predicted KO’s before the fifth because marquez was slowing down and pac had gotten so much better in those 4 yrs leading up to the rematch. That was a prime pac vs a slowing down marquez and he took it to him. I don’t buy the he knocked him down four times excuse everyone uses. If you knock down a guy 3 times in the first round and can’t finish him you probably don’t deserve to win the fight. I agree pac is a beast but people make him out to be invincible but if he is y go up to 154 and fight cotto last i checked there was 4 champions per division y not go after someone else? He is just as much a cherry picker as mayweather is. Do you think if there was one champ per division pac would have gone up as many weight classses? Hell no!
roberto rios
ok, my point is this, i think there is at least 10%-15% chance that pac can beat those guys from the 80′s, and i did mention “LUCKY PUNCH”, anything can happen inside the ring. ok who would think that TYSON would loose by ko to DOUGLAS at the time they fought? the first time ali fought liston, many said that liston will kill ali, but what happen.
dencio,
I have major problems with your reasoning!
PEDRO
but you dont have problem w/ manuel’s reasoning. did u find it hard to understand my point. just read my post again. i said nothing is impossible inside the ring, so there is a chance that pac, or even pbf can beat those guys from the 80′s , so whats your problem with that.
same here pedro, i also have major problems with your reasoning too. are u saying that there is 0 chance that pac can beat those guys? we will never know, thats why were only expressing our thoughts/opinions on those “what if” match-up.
roberto rios
it was an old sugar ray who beat hagler. i mean he is not that fast compare to pac/pbf…
Pac would have his lunch packed by Duran, Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, to compare fighters today with thast great era, and I don’t care how many weight divisions Pac wins, he doesn’t compare with these guys.
Manny Pacquiao can be compared to Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Robinson, Louis and even Ali. Pacquiao is an all time great as Emmanuel Stewart, Bert Sugar and other reputable boxing experts have said.
Pedro Fernandez opinion is as good as mine or as good as the bloggers’ opinion here in this site. In fact, if you consider Pedro as a Pacquiao hater, his opinion almost doesn’t count.
Hi,
Isn’t this article about Nonito Donaire? Should we not rather explore how he would fare against the current champions e.g. Arce, Montiel, or even Darchinyan, etc. At least your conjectures as to who is the better fighter here can be proved right or wrong. You can debate and argue all you want with regard to Pacquiao vs. Duran etc, with no end and final conclusion. Pacquiao should not be even mentioned here. Frances, I am not a big fan of Pacquiao but I think you are way too bias against Pacquiao. Why?
I’m with dencio. This is just an expression of thoughts. Like you Pedro, we are all free to express our opinions based on our own beliefs. There’s no way that Pacquiao fights those boxers mentioned above, so all predictions are subjective. Review your past predictions on Pac Pedro – it said it all.
Dencio please man ur post r like scraping fingernails against a chalkboard. If Pedro won’t say it I will pacman has ZERO chance to beat the 4 horsemen!!!!! ZERO!!!!!!!!!!! No lucky punch no hope. Leonard wasn’t old when he fought hagler. Look at what Tommy did to cuevas look at rays resume, look how duran beat the SHIT out of Iran Barkley when he was old and when u say hagler my personal favorite fighter look at hagler hearns hagler mugabi they hit hagler with shots I’ve never seen anybody take oh and one more thing these men fought 15 rounds and didn’t hand pick their fights.
Couldn’t have said it much better RR.
R RIOS/PEDRO
how come tyson lost to douglas? the odds back then were 42-1? or something like that. rios, i beg to disagree with u on that “0″ chance. as i’ve been telling here, anything is possible inside the ring. there is no such thing as 0 chance in boxing. pac may never ko hagler, but pac outpoint him.
Tyson was ******* Japanese hookers! Got knocked down by Greg Page & hammered by Mike Jamison. The “marks” may say that Pac belonged in the 80s with Duran, Ray, Marv, yeah he belonged in the 80s as a flyweight! Beating Hagler, please!
I’d like to see Pac vs Pryor. That’d be a hell of a matchup. Volume vs volume and both guys can pumch and Pryor takes hell of a punch. By the way isn’t this article about Donaire? Donaire is a really talented fighter who shows great skills and ring intelligence. He uses range and angle really well and seems to have a very educated left hand. Not as impressed with his right hand punches, thats the only thin he needs to develop but he is a great ring general who knows how to keep foes on the end of his punches. I’d like to see him against Yhonny Perez. Thats a good fight as well as Montiel.
Dencio I’m trying to be nice to u man. Tyson at that time wasn’t even a pro anymore. Tired bored sick of the grind. And let me say something else to u as much as I loved Tyson he wasn’t a natural born fighter. He was physicaly gifted. But hagler hearns duran Leonard pryor arguello Chavez and even pacman are born fighters. So Douglas Tyson equation don’t apply here. If ur waiting on a mirical then ur answer is in ur face he can’t in no way win. And if u can’t keep hagler off f u u have no chance and will be steam rolled. ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U need to watch hagler tapes man u don’t know what ur missing. I was a little boy who knew shit about boxing when I saw this bald black mean mother f-er just breaking this dudes will and spirit. To be honest that’s way more impresive than a 1 punch ko. That takes time and will hagler never got tired never got hurt never backed down manny had negative 1 million chance to be competetive with hagler. Please stop dencio or I’m gonna come at u hard not just for ur lack of boxing knowledge but the complete disrespect of the sport and it’s last true legends. No current fighter has a real chance against the past greats. Why do u think u see guys in their forties still doing it Hopkins mosley Toney at heavy?????? These are the watered down versions from the 80′s trust me I respect PAC and may they are atg’s but not in these guys league. I don’t give pbf or manny much a chance against a prime Trinidad or Oscar so don’t talk the 4 horsemen.
And speaking on Nonito not to speak down on pacman but nonito is the best pinoy fighter in the world. Head movement power, technique willing to fight I love to watch him. No check this dencio what did nonito say in his post fight interview(who he wanted to be like)???? Sweet pea whitiker and Marvalous Marvin Hagler!!!!!!!! U see that dencio. That’s says it all
rrios,
dont get me wrong, hagler is also one of my favorite fighter, and i did think that he beat leonard back then. ok pac may never beat hagler at middleweight, but at least give him 1 or .1 % chance at 147. for me, there is no such thing as perfect. and saying 0 chance sounds like perfect to me. and its only my opinion! i think should respect it as much as i respect yours, now, may i ask u a different “what if question”, hagler vs hopkins at middleweight.
rios
all in their primes
jc chaves vs duran
pryor vs pac
pbf vs sugar ray – ok u said that pac & pbf would never win against the guys from 80′s
erick morales vs arguello
sweat pea vs wilfred benitez
trinidad vs hearns
Duran moré complete , pryor could slug box and take a punch great Stalin 15 rounders and sitar ray wanted no part of him, ray all day!!! Arguello offemsive ballet of distruction. Sweat pea easy people say he couldnt puch but he had to have something to keep most those beast off him. I saw him hit Trinidad to the body and slow him for a quik sec. And me bring puerto rican id Love to say Tito or whoever landed First but the odds would be hearns sneaking that atomic bomb he calles a right hand and Tito would be doing salsa in his dreams. I have to be honest he was a sucker for fights David reíd, bernard hopkins, roy iones and none of them threw it as hard or fast as Tommy!!!!! Pedro elaborare for us that right hand Tommy threw on shuler holy shit!!!!!! Pedro what do u think of my predicts get at me dog
James Schuler, who would die like a month or so later in an motorcycle wreck, it was if somebody had shot him with a rifle. I remember his awkward but concussed descent to the canvas. It was a cold rainy day in Las Vegas. My cousin made a fortune selling big green trash bags as rain parkas for like $5 a pop!
Let’s talk about Pacman Fight this November 2010. Any updates?
