NBC BOXING SATURDAY AND SLICK AL HAYMON

DANNY GARCIA-LAMONT PETERSON TOP NBC BILL

San Francisco, CA- There is no speculation when it comes to who sits atop the jr. welterweight division as Danny Garcia has proven he’s the best 140 lb. fighter in the world with wins over Amir Khan and Lucas Matthysse being “statement” making events. His, what some thought was a lackluster win over Mauricio Herrera in 2014 in a Puerto Rican homecoming was nothing to rant about with some saying he didn’t win. That being said, the Philadelphia tiger will face Lamont Peterson in a match set for 143 lbs on NBC TV Saturday evening. For the record, Peterson holds the IBF belt at 140, which for the life of me I can’t fathom how seeing Matthyyse drilled him a few fights back.

TIGER WITH TEETH MEETS PAPER TIGER

So with Danny being the recognized World linear champion, he will meet the “paper” titleholder Lamont Peterson with both weighing three lbs. above the championship limit of 140. I’ve heard different reasons as to why this 143 lb. limit was agreed to. Danny can’t make the weight anymore, Lamont wanted the extra poundage, when in reality it could be Al Haymon looking to freeze out the sanctioning bodies. If you’re at 140 in a title fight you’re giving up either a percentage of your purse or a flat fee as is the case when purses get huge. Thus at 143 lbs. there are NO fees to pay.

PACTS MEANT PAYOFFS PART OF DOING BIZ

Having read and heard a tad about “Big Al’s” heyday in the music biz, one of the things Heymon did best was that that he eliminated the middlemen anytime he could. In the end, it meant more money for him and his acts to split up. The way it went, I was told, was that certain guys like the fictional Frank “The Shark” Palmerri would tell a promoter that if he wanted to book an event at a certain venue, Palmerri had to get “his” piece.

BOXING PROMOTER FORCED FROM MUSIC BUSINESS

From what i’ve tried to tie together from memory and old accounts, boxing promoter Cedric Kushner, who died in late 2014, was run out of the music industry because of his violating the R.I.C.O. Act with “shake downs” as he would obtain exclusive contracts with the venues. Then Ced, as he called himself in that long South African drawl, would be the guy you had to pay off in order to get the venue (say) in Albany, NY. Heymon supposedly played a part in putting that to an end.

LAST MAFIA FAMILY IN BOXING

The last I remember of this in boxing was when a certain family was alleged to have gotten a “piece” from every boxing event that took place in a huge east coast city that had casinos. And if you think I’m going to name them, I won’t because I truly respected the way this Godfather greatly and would never tarnish him or his relatives, and secondly, I’m not nearly as dumb as I look.

COP IN ME SAYS “BIG AL” LOOKS TO MAXIMIZE

A Harvard grad who was not the fraternity type, if what I’m being told is true, “Big Al” is a numbers whiz who thinks he has a plan in place to, if not takeover professional boxing in whole, at least be the most powerful man in the game. A lot of this has to do with the cutting out of middlemen. If Al Heymon, friend, manager, promoter, advisor, whatever his role or roles, I think eventually the long held role of the boxing manager as we know it may become a thing of the past. The elimination of sanctioning bodies, is that part of the Heymon plan as well? Well, just think about it, two 140 lb. titleholders fighting at 143 lbs.

  • Eventually they are going to have to make weight or be stripped of the title. Then again it might not matter for the bigger stars in the game. Will weight matter if Garcia fights Broner. I wish NBC would dump Sugar Ray. He was flat out rooting for peterson. At one point Ray says that Peterson power shots are not heavy but are frustrating Garcia. Then punchstat comes up 51-16 in favor of Garcia in power punches. He also kept talking about Petr. movement, meanwhile the fans are booing Petr. Put in Paulie Maling. to do the color. both fighters will get a fairer shake.

  • Quillin didn’t make weight. See a trend. It may have been on purpose. No sanction fees to pay and no fight for WBO title.
