“FIGHT CHICK” TKO’S PAC REPORTER!

March 16th, 2010 By Frances Martel

NEW YORK, NY- Ring Talk is first and foremost a place to discuss boxing, the boxing community, and the culture surrounding it, and rarely will you see any of us, especially me, engage in any self-absorbed defenses. But recently a piece came to my attention that merits at least a little bit of navel-gazing, so bear with me for a few hundred words. An individual named Colin Seymour, who purports to be a boxing journalist famous for his “theater and classical music reviews,” is upset at me and has called for Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) to physically assault me. I don’t have the heart to tell him he’s irrelevant, so let’s take a stroll through Seymour’s column, shall we?

POLITICAL SCIENCE (FICTION)

He starts his piece with a sloppy mess of convoluted political metaphors where he concludes that my sneaking suspicion that maybe not all is right at Team Wapakman is an obvious sign of anti-semetism, Tea Party membership, and some sort of strange Ann Coulter mimicry. This misinformation is best tackled piecemeal: unless Seymour knows something we don’t, Manny Pacquiao is not Jewish.
I am not, in fact, affiliated with any Tea Party organization, nor would it be proper of me given my day job. And if I’m like any major right-wing political figure, I’m obviously Glenn Beck– the uncanny ability to infuriate, the Ivy League education (Beckster was sentenced to do some time in Yale), the endearing extra ten pounds… but I digress. To say Mr. Seymour’s understanding of politics is extremely limited is being way too generous.

GIVING MOVIE STAR WAPAKMAN THE SPECIAL TREATMENT

Of course, the article isn’t meant to be about politics, and it doesn’t take long for Seymour to get into the meat of his argument, that it is outrageous that I “can say without equivocation that Manny is a cheating criminal.” Yes, of course it is! Which is why I didn’t say that. I said that Pacquiao was bad for boxing because his popularity is centered around things that have nothing to do with his skill: “Pacquiao is a hero because he makes movies and sings songs and has a colorfully scandalous love life—his work in the ring, while brilliant on paper, is under serious suspicion that Pacquiao and his trainer, Freddie Roach, refuse to acknowledge.” Nothing in that sentence confirms that he is a “criminal;” it merely states that someone whose primary passion is not boxing is a bad role model for potential champions who view the lack of discipline as proper multitasking. It’s not. It’s athletic negligence and fighters like Chris Arreola (28-1, 25 KOs) and even Ocean’s 11-era Lennox Lewis (41-2-1, 32 KOs) were skewered in the media for it. Why give Pacquiao a pass when the press gave people like Lewis such a hard time?

PROVE PACQUIAO HAD SOMETHING TO LOSE FIGHTING CLOTTEY

The strangest thing about this person’s rage is that it seems to be directed at the fact that I saw Pacquiao’s fight with Clottey as a win-win for the pound-for-pound champ. To which my only response is: prove that I’m wrong. Argue that, somehow, Pacquiao could have left this fight with a reputation tarnished and a loss of any, even one, fan, even if he lost. The only thing Pacquiao could have done to leave the ring on Saturday night losing is if he taped an anvil to either glove, punched Clottey in the groin with them, and did a coke line off of Clottey’s unconscious body. Pacquiao’s popularity in circles where he is respected is so high that the man can do no wrong. Or else he wouldn’t be fighting a giant crab in a d-list movie. You underestimate the power of Pacquiao’s deification among fans when you claim that a fight against someone like Clottey is not a win-win.

AND DON’T FORGET TO BUY HIS BOOK!

And of course this masterful wordsmith ends his piece with a brutal take-down of epic proportions: “Lying liar.” I’d call him the liar, but I’m not five years old, and I think at this point his is a pathological issue more than just a moral one. But all this conjecture is meaningless because, in my attempt to make sense out of the senseless, I seem to have missed the true intention of this article, sneakily written into the second sentence: “My own novel is about a liberal sportscaster who runs afoul of the right wing’s predominance in the world of sports. So you won’t be surprised,” he continues, that he chooses to attack a sports journalist he arbitrarily labeled right-wing to fulfill his fantasy of being a Keith Olbermann-esque liberal superhero. And while he’s at it, he might as well shill his new crappy Harlequin smut novel. If you like stream of consciousness leftist tirades and Jewish-Filipino alliance conspiracy theories, you’ll love Countdown to Overtime and the War for the Soul of Boxing 2: the Squeakquel, by Colin Seymour! I hate to give in to his real motives, but fine: you win, Seymour. Send me a free copy and I’ll gladly review it– even give you literary advice! Everyone needs a mentor, and I’d be glad to be yours.

  2. Frances,

I don’t always agree with your columns but that guy is a creep. Calling someone a racist in public is one of the most underhanded things one can do to someone; doing it without any proof–ie for ulterior motives–shows worse character than being an actual racist. “False accusers” are the lowest on the list in my opinion.

Uhhhh, Hello, Frances (& Pete)? I think I may have been the only one to catch Franny’s argument on the piece about Pac that incited a flood storm of hate. And yet you 2 responded to the ‘idiots’ that cant read, and not to someone that had a question directly related to the MAIN ISSUE. Frances, again, How could you call someone that has generated Oscar type of money and news into the sport, bad for boxing? If Pac is bad, what about Floyd, and his ring riots, IRS scandals, strip club brawls caused by counterfiet bills, baby mama drama, rap beefs, skating ring shootings, family drug deals, and uncles beating women? I mean Frances, c’mon now, how about an address? I am the only ONE to have pointed out your view, the least you could do is counter, and give a solid reason, when offered a different opposing perspective.

As for this ‘dweeb’ Seymor. He sounds like an agitator looking for some attention. Sounds like someone we all know, doesnt it, Fran? So now this is what the news or reporting has become, journalist BEEF? My god, this is ABSURD.

  14. This article just want to have some hits. When an article mention Pacquiao, many web readers commented, esp if its Pac’s critics. No matter what, Pac is Pac, Seymour is Seymour. Pacquiao is not a hero because he makes movie, the proof is his latest movie didn’t even make to top 5 in the Phils. He is not a hero because he has great skill in boxing, he is a hero because he wins fight, no matter what adversaries he face. Floyd has great boxing skills and he might win easily when he fights Pacquiao, but may not be praise by many boxing fans that love to see a real fight, mano o mano.

    2. Why can’t you accept the truth that a non-American, let alone a Filipino is dominating your favorite fight sport? Do we smell r_____m?
    3. Why is Pacquiao bad for the sport? Did you think the great Michael Jordan was bad for basketball then with all the gambling and off-court issues? How about writing an article about Tiger Woods’ example to kids who wanna play golf? Bad for the sports, huh!
    4. True journalists present two sides of the story and develop their piece from it. Did you bother to ask the trainer – Freddie Roach why he allows Manny Pacquiao to do all these non-boxing related stuff? Too bad you chose not to or you ignore your duty as a journalist.
Oh by the way, I forgot: this is only a blog.
And, blogs are not a good source of unbiased and relevant information.

  19. Frances, you got it all wrong about Pacquiao achievements and the other things he can do well. Being recognized by both BWAA and Ring Magazine as the Fighter of the Decade speaks volume about the right things he does outside of boxing. Because he can do other things well outside boxing, people from other sports and fields of interest become attracted to boxing because of Pacquiao. In this way, boxing become larger and more popular which helps not only Manny but other fghters like the arrogant Floydie Jr. I have a feeling that you are one of a kind for not appreciating a great sportsman cvan do other things well outside of his sports.

  22. Interesting article, Frances but you can’t blame Pacman for multi-tasking because he wouldn’t be able to do boxing forever. He needs something to fallback into when he retires. Lots of boxers are broke and umemployed now a days. Anyway, your piece is good and thought provoking. Way to go,girl.

Glasschin Roy on March 16th, 2010 at 4:08 PM
  23. lol, wow. his popularity IS centered on boxing, this makes more people suspicious about your knowledge about the sport. most if not all the extra side works he’s done is in the Philippines. You cant give us that bullshit reply. I have love for Money May but it sounds like you’re one of those cum guzzlers who is hypnotized by his ring skills. No one would know Pac if the guy has no skills. There are tons of different boxing styles out there. Know boxing? I dont think you have much. Do you think Obama should’ve answered his birth cirtificate critics? Do you even know who started the roids fiasco? Exactly.

You’re basing your arguement from the Filipino media that follows his every move.

His skills are always the ones mentioned first, his side job in movies, music, politics are mentioned as extras. Boxing is full of drama and politics, it’s not new in this sport.

mark on March 16th, 2010 at 4:11 PM
  24. Nobodys perfect, Pacquiao accepts that, Seymour maybe, Frances may not. There’s always an excuse for a person that will not accept others achievements. Like Oscar, he said after their fight that Pacs punch were not hard enough, but lately says the punch just like Vargas when Oscar attempt to accuse Pac of using steroids. Recent Pacs fight has some says fixed, they just don’t understand that Clottey was avoiding a knockout, or was just simply outclassed. Shame on clottey for not fighting Pac, anyway, thanks because I win when he’s still standing after 12 rounds.

Gogoy on March 16th, 2010 at 4:36 PM
  25. Frances, it is your incendiary language that invited the like response. While I do not condone Colin Seymour’s statements, your column was intended to bait such a reaction from Pacmaniacs. For a Harvard graduate, your boxing “analysis” leaves much to be desired, being contradictory, illogical and sarcastic. For example, you start on the premise that Pacman is an steroid-user. What is your proof? That he is an “extraordinary fighter,” to use Floyd’s own words? How can someone who routinely does stratospheric PPV numbers be bad for boxing. By your own reasoning, the boring John Ruiz or Valuev is therefore good for boxing.

Your anti-establishment political style won’t wash in sports column. It may work to discredit politicians, who are to be judge by public image, but sports athletes must be judged by statistics, not sarcasm.

You reap what you sow, Frances. Start a political blog.

  26. I didn’t bother reading your article because I did it once and I thought you didn’t present a valid argument for your rants. You’re just trying to get attention for yourself at the expense of a popular boxer. Sort of like Paulie Malignaggi trash-talking Pacquiao to get attention for his fights, you do this to get hits for your column.

  33. I am not a pac fan, in fact I believe him to be overated and I believe that he is an easy fight for Floyd however that doesn’t stop me appeciating him. I enjoy watching him fight. His style is exciting and he is good for boxing. As for his non ring activities, I very much doubt that many fans in the USA or Europe have seen his movies, and most couldn’t give a tuppeny toss about his singing, and any success that he has in these endeavours is due to his exciting ring appearances.

Do you think that anyone would pay to see Joe Frazier or Larry Holmes sing if it wasn’t for their name recognition as Heavyweight Champions, or for that matter Sugar Ray Robinson’s tap dancing if SRR hadn’t generated excitment in the ring. The list goes on and on, and includes greats an not so greats like Tex Cobb who have parlayed their ring career into singing or acting dollars. Good luck to them all.

  35. “Pacquiao is a hero because he makes movies and sings songs and has a colorfully scandalous love life…”

Let me take a wild guess here Frances… you’ve never been to the Philippines. That’s what I thought. I’m from Canada. I’ve been to the Philippines 5 times, and am currently living here. Allow me to give you some insight on something which is seems to have alluded you: Pacquiao is a hero here because of what he has accomplished in the boxing ring and that gives Filipinos a serious sense of pride. Period. If you fail to grasp that simple concept, I strongly suggest you start writing on topics with which you have at least some basic understanding – or at least educate yourself on the true reasons behind Pacquiao’s popularity.

Failing that, I would suggest – if you insist on writing inane, banal nonsense aimed at discrediting the accomplishments of Manny Pacquiao – at least do it in such a way as to not insult the entire nation of the Philippines.

Pls use your head not your emotion, alright? and before you start punching the keyboard, try to go out in the sports world, feel the heat of being in the ringside, interview the boxers, trainers and other true boxing fans, boxing experts, instead of, uhhh, staying infront of the computer the whole day getting info from different writers and pick the one you dont like, especially if it smells like too mUCH megamanny , then you use your little talent to start this big words and attract the attention of many, get the hits you need, and earn a lot of money. 39. Notice how Frances can’t seem to respond to legitimate questions that are asked that might refute parts of her article. So she can write anything but can’t come back to defend it.

Floyd most likely has popularity that has nothing to do due to his skill unless you call running off at the mouth and being a hypocite a skill. I’, quite sure some are fans of his due to thug mentality and the way he thorws money around. Is that not bad for the sport?

Brian on March 16th, 2010 at 6:06 PM
  40. I read your previous article just to know why Colin Seymour reacted that way. And you can notice, too that the blogs, comments below the article really showed their sentiment that you’re really Manny hater. Why? “Yes, Pacquiao is bad for the spirit of boxing” You mentioned “steroid scandal.” Is there any single moment that Manny was tested positive for any prohibited drugs, or is there any single incident that Manny refused any commission’s required drug test? Manny is bad for the spirit of boxing because he has very little discernable boxing skill? Huhuh. And you perceived that he could not win a fight because of that limited skill he has. Because he is winning, then you conclude that he is taking something such as PED or HGH and other prohibited drugs.

Do you mean that all those who voted for him as Fighter of the Decade, Fighter of the Year are damn and blind which could not see the reality?

If he started as a singer or an actor who suddenly went to box you might say this might be the case but it’s the other way around. A completely false generalization. Maybe Harvard should start reconsidering your admission.

“.. it merely states that someone whose primary passion is not boxing is a bad role model for potential champions who view the lack of discipline as proper multitasking.”
The quoted statements above show the utter unfairness of Frances Martel towards Pacquiao. She makes conclusions based on nothing but her biased opinion, which is ridiculous or non-sensical, to say the least.
What proof does she have that Pacquiao’s primary passion is not boxing? Why does Frances Martel say that Pacquiao lacks discipline for pursuing his other passions outside of boxing. On the contrary, it only proves that Pacquiao is well-disciplined because he has been successful in boxing in spite of his pursuit of his other passions in life. In fact, everybody who has seen him train raves at his total dedication in training for a fight.

The fact that Pacquiao’s concert in Hawaii was canceled due to poor ticket sales only proves that Pacquiao’s popularity is not due to his singing, but his boxing ability.

Secondly, the fact that Pacquiao lost in the previous congressional election also proves that people love him more because of his boxing exploits than his involvement in politics.

  67. I wonder how this bitch Frances Martel got to writing stuff about boxing? Is Ring Talk stupid or what? There’s so many writers out there who are much better and much knowledgeable, they have to give this job to a stupid right wing racist feminist who got no clue what she’s talking about… I think Frances Martel is better off writing tabloids because she’s so good at fabricating stories. Is that what they teach in Harvard these days? Do they teach you to be racist and down right stupid? To make the record straight, Pacquiao has never been proven to have taken PEDs, HGH, steroids, A Side meth or any kind of performance-enhancing drug. Pacquiao should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. The Mayweathers on the other hand are notorious for being drug pushers and women beaters… I am more likely to suspect the Mayweather of using drugs than Pacquiao. In fact, Floyd was known to have used Xylocaine when he broke his fists in one of his fights to lessen the pain. Do your research bitch or find a new job. You’re disgusting.

  75. As others have already cited Frances, Pacman’s famous because of his boxing skills, people watch him because he is an exciting fighter, a few years back, he is a pure slugger and crowds love sluggers, but now he’s evolved to much more than that, and people are amazed with his career. Admit that the guy has God given talents and he is hardworking, maybe you should go and visit his training camp you get a chance to see why other boxers and trainers say he’s one of the hardworking athlete they’ve seen.

All his acting, singing and whatnot are just icing on the cake, honey. You didn’t do your research well, read up on his early life in the Philippines and how he got started on boxing and tell us why it isn’t his primary passion.

Hey, F Martel what’s the use of that Harvard degree if your name is mentioned alongside people who trash-talk all the time because they’re uneducated, idiotic actually because of great envy? Imagine them interpreting AGIMAT (Tagalog term for a supernatural amulet that is based on myth and folklore), as A-Meth! Idiots, morons and imbecils!

I believe you are capable of writing brilliant articles to get some attention, than downsizing Pacman’s enormous achievements. Are you dreaming of being on the Mayweather’s payroll one of these days? Who knows, they might offer you a PR post?

  80. Ms. Frances Martel,

To say that Pacquiao’s popularity is due to reasons other than his success in boxing is absurd and not based on facts as expected from a Harvard graduate.

Fact is the ticket sales for his movie “Wapakman” was dismal
Fact is his concert in Hawaii was canceled due to poor ticket sales
Fact is he lost in the last congressional election.

In other words, he was not successful in his other endeavors. His popularity is due to his success in boxing alone.

  87. Ms. Frances Martel,

I hope you could be more factual the next time write. Do your research, interview people who knows boxing. Interview people who knows Pacquiao. Ask people why or what they love or like about Pacquiao. Visit the Wildcard Gym and ask about Pacquiao’s training regimen. It is only in this way that you will be able to make factual observations and then and only then should you make conclusions about Pacquiao.

You can not just make your negative opinion about Pacquiao appear like it is factual. It is bad journalism. It is bigotry.

You can not just smear a person’s reputation without factual basis. It is unchristian.

  90. Don Juan Dinero:

Sorry for not getting back to you quicker. I liked your question and meant to answer it sooner, but I’ve been busy in the alternate universe where I write about politics celebrating the fact that I checked off something big (career-related) on my life’s to-do list.

Your question was: “How could you call someone that has generated Oscar type of money and news into the sport, bad for boxing?”

The health of boxing is not entirely dependent on money and publicity– there is a level of integrity and sportsmanship that goes into it, too. Pac could make millions of dollars and make headlines for fighting giant crabs, but ultimately if he’s declining steroid testing and gallivanting around with all sorts of women gambling and generally being a bad example, that’s not good for the next generation. Imagine if that South African hermaphrodite runner declined the gender test- even if she turned out to be female, it’s bad sportsmanship. And bad sportsmanship outweighs profit.

Thats funny bro! But trust me, this chick has no repect for boxers that she does not appreciate. A pampered ass ivy league graduate critiquing these ring warriors with no respect deserves what they get, whether male or female. I can understand it coming from a blogger, but she’s supposed to be a boxing writer! When anti-pacquiao fans begin to critique what she writes about pacquiao, then you KNOW she done fu**&% up! IDK, when over 90 percent of the people DON’T like your writing and it’s evident in the responses, I’m sure it gets to the person on some level…

  92. The biggest problem with this whole steroid testing controversy is that it is being pushed on ONE fighter. If there is such a big problem with boxing’s steroid testing then why aren’t all of these people, who are so concerned about steroids, campaigning to get the testing improved for the whole sport and then everyone would have to meet the requirements of stricter testing and not just Pacquiao.
Until it is mandatory for all fighters, Pacquiao should not be singled out and this topic should be a dead issue. But, I guess controversy brings in the readers.

What about the next generation of Mexican fighters naming themselves El Pacquiao? Or the top MMA fighters naming their punches “The Pacquiao”. What about the Hospitals or Schools Manny has built in the Philippines, or the countless jobs that Pacquiao just can’t say no to people, so he gives them “duties” so they to can earn? What about the SPORTSMANSHIP that Pacquiao shows to all his opponants, never throwing intentional lowblows, or giving in to demeaning trash talk?

One of your old articles you wrote in which you called De La Hoya one of the greatest middleweights ever (funny) was going to KILL pacquiao in the ring in a totall mismatch and the only reason you stated Pacquiao was fighting De La Hoya was because of the Pacnuts and sycophants around him CONVINCED him he had a chance. And Pinoys are proud of him for his RING ACCOMPLISHMENTS, not from his movies, singing, etc…Just look down south of our border and look for a chicle kid (a kid as young as 6 years old selling gum)…Thats pacquiao in the past…

  99. FRANCES, I like the way you write, but you messed this one up big time. You’re self-contradictory. Saying that PAC is BAD for boxing is the most thoughtless statement you have ever written, much less saying that he has no discernible skills. YOU DON’T KNOW how many people are being inspired by this humble boxer. Again, you are mistaken, Pac’s popularity is not centered on his scandalous affair (which has never been proven, unlike that of TIGER WOODS), political exploits (which he is actually mocked) and singing career (many Filipinos are even embarrassed to sing his songs). Much couldn’t care less about these things, even I wouldn’t comment about these stuffs. Saying that he lacks discipline is outrageous, perhaps you have never seen him trained.

His refusal to submit to a blood test NOT commissioned by sanctioning body is VALID and a privilege he shouldn’t be denied of. Let the commission changes it policies and Pac will gladly comply! What other assumption you have to say Pac might be on PED other than taking ex-convict/drugpusher Mayweather’s accusations seriously? You just can’t believe that Pacquiao can be THAT good, can you? But then again you said that Pac has NO DISCERNIBLE skills?
