HBO AIRS DON KING CARD FROM MOHEGAN SUN
Uncasville, CT- Devon Alexander, 139.25, St. Louis, MO TKO 8 Juan Urango, 139.75, Cooper City, FL. (WBC/IBF 140 lb. titles) Alexander, (20-0, 13 KOs) unifies the titles, after seemingly outboxing Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) the 1st seven rounds, an easy decision seemed forthcoming. However a right dropped Urango in the eighth round and a follow up flurry from Alexander ended it at 1:12 of the said round. Alexander retains WBC belt and picks up IBF trinket.

Some exciting fights. Alexander is definitly a force to be reckoned with in the junior welter division. I can’t believe that Hilario is so poorly schooled that he doesn’t know how to throw a jab, shame on his trainer. Honorio fought a good fight and still may have won even if Hilario could throw a jab. Guerrero may be too tough for his own good! A couple of fights like the one against Darchinyan and he will be “shot” fighter at a very young age. Hopefully, his trainer can teach him better defense?
The fight that didn’t get mentioned was Zappavigna vs. Angulo. That fight was another example of INCOMPETENT judging. I watched the fight without scoring it. I listened to the analysts and thought Angulo had won the fight, but when the scores were announced, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! I went back and watched the fight again, this time scoring it. I break a round into 3 one minute segments, which is easy to do watching on T.V. ( I realize that watching live, you may score differently ). I scored the fight 114 to 113 Angulo, that included a point deduction against Angulo in the 9th round for hitting on the break. How Judges Cantu and Hamada scored it 116 to 111 for Zappavigna is BEYOND my comprehension! I could live with the 114 to 113 Zappavigna from judge Davis. If I was head of any boxing commission, I would hold officials accountable for their performance and if they couldn’t do a competent job, they would not have a job. Instead, these INCOMPETENTS are rewarded for poor job performance, sounds like politicians and government workers, at least the majority of them!!!! Tuck that chin and keep punching!
Martín Honorio sure seems to have recovered from that 1st round KO loss to Robert Guerrero.
I thought I saw a slightly heavy Marco Antonio Barrerra in Guerrero’s corner. Guerrero showed a ton of heart.
I also thought that Urango was just starting to get to Alexander, and that Urango’s best rounds (the later rounds) were coming up. What a great upper-cut by Alexander. Tim Bradley / Devon Alexander would be a solid match-up.
As the Showtime crew was talking about how Angulo was winning a close fight against Zappa, I thought “wait until the scores are read and see how far the judges have Zappa winning”. Saddened to be right.
Othereise, great fight weekend.
