KELL BROOK “MAKE OR BREAK” VS. SHAWN PORTER
SHOWTIME FROM STUB HUB CENTER IN CARSON, CA
This is an “acid” test of sorts for the 32-0 with 22 KOs Brook who has fought the usual pedestrian suspects like Lovemore N’Dou and Carson Jones twice. His standout performance is a TKO 4 over Viacheslav Senchenko (37-2-24 KOs) in 2013.
CURRY TURNED OUT TO BE OVERRATED
As for mentioning former 147 & 154 lb champ Donald Curry (34-6, 25 KOs) and Kell in the same sentence, I do that because the Brit’s think Kell has “the goods,” much like the Yanks thought Curry would deliver in the 1980s. He didn’t and Curry was thwarted by Lloyd Honeyghan at 147 and was put to sleep by Mike McCallum in 1987 by a single left hook.
KELL & PORTER BOTH HAVE LOTS TO PROVE
Brook, like Curry has looked good against guys he was supposed to beat. But American Porter (25-0-1, 15 KOs) is a bit of an untested commodity as well. Looking at his professional resume, there are a lot of undefeated guys he beat. But when you look closer most of these guys were just the product of good matchmaking and a promoter willing to pay for opponents with good records.
PORTER HAS MASS EDGE WHILE KELL HAS HEIGHT
The 24-year old Porter once campaigned at 154, thus he has the edge in body mass. Kell on the other hand will enjoy a two inch height advantage with their reach being even at ’69. While this is a very close fight, you have a clear choice regardless of whom you pick.
BROOK LOOKS LIKE BETTER BOXER
If you like flashy combinations and good hand speed, the 28 year old Brit is the way you would lean. If you thought Porter dismantling Paulie Malignaggi and beating Devon Alexander were something special, then you’ll like Porter. Looks like a real competitive fight worthy of your time or space on your DVR.
