IS KELL BROOK ANOTHER DONALD CURRY?

KELL BROOK “MAKE OR BREAK” VS. SHAWN PORTER

Kell Brook

Kell Brook

San Francisco, CA- First off, if your name was Ezekiel Brinsly, you might want to change it to Kell Brook. The #1 ranked IBF 147 lb. contender, I’ve watched develop on European TV. Fighting out of Sheffield, UK, Kell has shown a few flashes of potential greatness.

SHOWTIME FROM STUB HUB CENTER IN CARSON, CA

This is an “acid” test of sorts for the 32-0 with 22 KOs Brook who has fought the usual pedestrian suspects like Lovemore N’Dou and Carson Jones twice. His standout performance is a TKO 4 over Viacheslav Senchenko (37-2-24 KOs) in 2013.

CURRY TURNED OUT TO BE OVERRATED

As for mentioning former 147 & 154 lb champ Donald Curry (34-6, 25 KOs) and Kell in the same sentence, I do that because the Brit’s think Kell has “the goods,” much like the Yanks thought Curry would deliver in the 1980s. He didn’t and Curry was thwarted by Lloyd Honeyghan at 147 and was put to sleep by Mike McCallum in 1987 by a single left hook.

KELL & PORTER BOTH HAVE LOTS TO PROVE

Brook, like Curry has looked good against guys he was supposed to beat. But American Porter (25-0-1, 15 KOs) is a bit of an untested commodity as well. Looking at his professional resume, there are a lot of undefeated guys he beat. But when you look closer most of these guys were just the product of good matchmaking and a promoter willing to pay for opponents with good records.

PORTER HAS MASS EDGE WHILE KELL HAS HEIGHT

The 24-year old Porter once campaigned at 154, thus he has the edge in body mass. Kell on the other hand will enjoy a two inch height advantage with their reach being even at ’69. While this is a very close fight, you have a clear choice regardless of whom you pick.

BROOK LOOKS LIKE BETTER BOXER

If you like flashy combinations and good hand speed, the 28 year old Brit is the way you would lean. If you thought Porter dismantling Paulie Malignaggi and beating Devon Alexander were something special, then you’ll like Porter. Looks like a real competitive fight worthy of your time or space on your DVR.

  1. Thank God we’re treated a fight next saturday and that Shawn didn’t choose to do another Danny Garcia. At least on paper it looks like a good matchup.
On paper Porter certainly has the edge in this one. As he has the greater experience and fought the better opposition. But Brook certainly is no pushover and the Brits over here in Europe are definetly counting on him.
I expect Porter to be somewhat cautious until he finds the opening to get inside. Especially from the 5th round onward it should get interesting. Porter by late round tko.
    Cheers

  2. I think Donald Curry was a great fighter between ’83 and ’86 (when he was stopped by Honeyghan). He beat many outstanding fighters including Marlon Starling (twice), Nino LaRocca, Colin Jones, Jun Sok Hwang and Milton McCrory. These opponents were outstanding, and each presented different styles. Curry beat them all pretty convincingly. He was patient, quick, had excellent hand speed, was well-conditioned, could counterpunch, and his power was above average. When he got hurt, he never panicked. Remember that Curry had roughly 400 amateur fights, and he may have started to become shopworn when he lost to Honeyghan. Also, trying to make 147 had became difficult. Even after losing to Curry and McCallum, he was still good enough to beat Lupe Aquino, Gianfranco Rosi and Brett Lally.

I don’t know too much about Kell Brook, but I read that Sean Porter beat Paulie M. really convincingly. Paulie has been thru many wars. Also, Porter had difficulty with Julio Diaz.
