IS PACQUIAO MAYWEATHER’S DURAN?
November 17th, 2009 By Brian Gorman
FLOYD VS. MANNY: SHADES OF DURAN-LEONARD I?
Pittsburgh, PA- In the summer of 1980 at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, “Sugar Ray” Leonard put his spotless 27-0 record on the line against the animalistic brawling recent lightweight (135 lb.) champion Roberto “Manos de Piedra (Hands of Stone)” Duran, then 71-1. The outcome would determine not only supremacy of the welterweight (147) division but of the sport, with the decline of Muhammad Ali. As we now know, the contest would be Leonard’s lone loss in his prime because he chose to – or perhaps he was forced to – stand toe-to-toe with Duran, and he suffered a physical beating in a decisive, albeit competitive, defeat.
MANNY THIS GENERATION’S DURAN?
After yet another awe inspiring display this weekend, demand has reached new and greater heights for a showdown, not just for pound-for-pound supremacy, but for status among the all-time greats, between Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) and Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. (40-0, 25 KOs). Interestingly, those who favorably view Mayweather’s status amongst the all-timers evoke memories of Leonard, and with his aggression and thirst for blood Pacquiao has the boxing world speaking of the Panamanian, perhaps the greatest lightweight of all time. While Duran came off as a wild carnivorous beast who was unleashed in the ring, Pacquiao may be his antithesis, a cute, warm and fuzzy smiling assassin, though just as lethal.
HOW DOES PACMAN COMPARE TO DURAN?
So violent that he probably considered monetary compensation as just a bonus while he beat the hell out of people, you can only imagine Duran’s reaction to watching the young gun croon one of the lamest pop ballads, “Sometimes When We Touch.” But having watched both destroy helpless victims, one can’t help but want to hold them until the fear in them subsides. (I couldn’t resist that one.) With Pacquiao, like Duran, it’s becoming evident that, at this point in his evolution, perhaps only a great like Mayweather can stand in with him – but can he?
CAN FLOYD FIND SAFETY AGAINST THE PACMAN?
Leonard tried unsuccessfully to withstand Duran’s assault in their first bout, and when he learned that he couldn’t beat Duran in a fight, he showed his genius in their return match by proving that boxing isn’t only about fighting. He showboated, danced and pot-shotted an ill-prepared Duran in their rematch until his frustration and embarrassment got the better of him. Yet, while Mayweather has much more experience than Leonard did in 1980, he won’t have that luxury of competing against an opponent with a vulnerable psyche; in fact, it’s Pacman’s unflagging love for combat that unnerves his competition.
SO WHO WINS, FLOYD OR MANNY?
The most important similarity between Duran-Leonard I and Pacquiao-Mayweather would lie in the aggressors’ lack of respect for the skills and defense of the Americans. Mayweather has his opponents beaten the minute they start pulling their punches, concerned about getting humiliated and pasted at once. Like Duran, Pacquiao has such confidence that it takes only the most skillful tactician to remove him from his element – that is, fistic warfare. Like Leonard, Mayweather has that capability, but the great thing about the potential of a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather classic is he’ll have to prove that to the Pacman.

Great article!!
Pacquaio has looked like the new Duran for a while and it’s good to see both (Manny and Roberto) get remembered in the press. If Manny is Roberto to Floyd’s Sugar, he’s also Joe Frazer to Floyd’s Ali. It should be close, memorable, historical, and I might even buy the PPV. But if Manny dumps Freddie Roach before the fight, it might also be a frustrating footrace. Freddie has the skill and respect to plan the attack.
Let’s hope both camps come in, if they do come in, in top mental and physical form!
Manny the aaron pryor of his decade.
Aaron Pryor was the man! I would have loved to see either Floyd or Pac against him. Or Leonard, or Duran. Hawk Time!
this fight has got to happen.. pound for pound king, vs pound for pound king.. Floyd hasnt lost that p4p title in a loss or a beating.. He withdrew from the sport, leaving the rains up to pacman.. who is the p4p king now.. Floyd is back, and looks sharper then ever with the destruction of marquez.. And the boxing fans are left waiting and hopeing this fight will happen so we all can know who is indeed the best p4p fighter in the world today.. Nomatter what the outcome is.. This is the fight that will put boxing back on the map.. we need fights like this…
Manny is just so damn good! This is not the same Pac Man of 3 years ago, he’s a real monster now. As a man from the poor and a Catholic, he inspires me, because if he can do, so can I:)
We all saw the effectiveness of the jabs of miguel cotto against manny pacquiao on the first round, and mayweather will use this tactics, im also sure that coach roach saw this weaknesses
terrific article! witty and sightful! Keep them coming!
TOO BAD I THINK MAYWEAHTER WILL DUCK PACQUIAO BY PRICING HIMSELF TOO MUCH…
Floyd IS NOT AN ALL-TIME GREAT !! MANNY IS !! Pls. take a look at Floyd’s opponent (besides Diego) and how he wins fights..If you get what i mean. Floyd is boring, a runner and a cherry picker.. He was great at 130 – 135lbs. but untested and unproven at jr. and welterweight. If he’s great, then he should knock out a great 154lb. champ and then 160lb. champion (say Pavlik, Abraham)just like what Manny is doing in his 7th division..But knowing Floyd, he’s too chicken to do that..!!
as soon as the fight between leonard and duran was sealed, duran’s mantra before the gathered press (in ALL the months before the actual fight) was: “do not waste your money to watch this fight; tell everybody not to waste their money to watch
because there will be no fight; leonard’s just going to run, run, run! like an (expletive) girl.”
this is what set the stage for the MAJOR, MAJOR! surprise come fight night because leonard then chose to fight duran (the first fight) rather than pot-shot-n-run, as he eventually did in the second fight– which then led to a completely frustrated duran doing the “no-mas” walk-out deal– but only after duran had received some major punishment without the benefit of payback as he was punching air all eight (7?) rounds before he walked away from the bout.
but that was some kind of first fight, wasn’t it? i personally believe it to be on par with ali-frazer I. great fight!
Stop comparing Manny to any of this fighters. I’ve seen this fighters in their prime and you are doing a disservice to Manny’s accomplishments. Leonard was my favorite fighter of all time. But after watching Manny move up in weight and destroy all his opponents. He reminds me of a freak (like Magic Johnson a 6′9″ point guard) Something you have nothing to compare after 30 yrs playing his first NBA game. You’ve seen players commparable to Jordan but not Magic. Manny Pacquiao is a freak of nature.
Manny has been the “DAVID” slayer of the great, big and huge “GOLIATHS”.
Floyd, he’s not in the class of Manny. He is GAYweather.
As the saying goes, the bigger GAYweather is, the HARDER GAYweather falls.
you hit the bullseye Brian! great article indeed, it made me review my boxing history
Pacquiao is Duran (ferocity), Henry Armstrong (multiple titles), Muhammad Ali (rope a dope and fighting backwards against cotto), and could Joe Frazier (against Mayflower).
Gayflower could turn it into an ugly fight by running and pecking him all night to an excruciatingly boring points win – specially now that everybody witnessed the power that Pac brought in the welterweight division. Cotto who was supposed to be bigger and stronger fighter but he paid dearly when he tried to fight toe to toe against pac. Nobody could stand toe-to-toe with Wapakman!
why would Pacquiao dump Roach? LOL
Remembering Roberto Duran
Legend has it that Roberto Duran swam across rivers in his hometown to steal mangoes at the other side. It was his way of ensuring that he would find himself involved in fisticuffs.
The local police could only shake their heads as they ran out of supplies updating the Duran files and trying to contain the youngster, until they thought of how such a hyper-active fetish for mayhem could be put to good use.
They brought him to a boxing gym. And the rest was history: The kid who loved to fight would one day become one of the greatest fighters who ever lived.
He had yet to turn 17 when, on February 23, 1968, he took prizefighting as his life-long occupation. His first opponent as a professional fighter was Carlos Mendoza, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in 4 rounds.
If Duran’s first few fights were any indication, his boxing career was no doubt headed to something great, and the prizefighter to stardom.
All but 4 of his first 31 fights ended in either KO or TKO.
Esteban de Jesus halted his run at 32, losing to him by unanimous decision in 10 rounds. De Jesus floored Duran in the first round, and after that the bout was a breathtaking display of vicious give and take from beginning to end.
Duran and de Jesus would clash 3 more times after that. As in the first, the two locked horns in the middle of the ring, with either one unwilling to yield an inch of space to the other. But Duran was just too much class. He knocked out de Jesus in the 11th of the second bout, and in the 12th in the third and last bout.
Fighting mostly in his hometown Panama early in his career, Duran brought his brand of boxing to the United States and to the world in a 1971 fight against Benny Huertas at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Boxing fans who saw him for the first time wondered if what was before them was at all human. He had fire in his eyes that encouraged an opponent to seek out the nearest exit. And when the bell rang, he was like a bomb packaged in human form, ready to detonate anytime inside the ring.
Ring action had barely turned on the heat when Duran exploded, knocking out Huertas in the first round.
That fight alerted the boxing world of his arrival, and from then on boxing fans wanted to see more of Duran. He awed them in more than a hundred exacting ring battles. He competed for 31 years (the longest in boxing history) in a career that spanned 5 decades (also a record). No one knew how much longer he planned to continue fighting. What many people would later know was that a life-threatening car accident in Argentina in 2001 forced him out of the ring, never to compete again. The decision may have been made with reluctance, but he nevertheless ended his boxing career with a 103-16 win-loss record.
Duran fought the who’s who of boxing in his time and beyond: Ken Buchanan, Sugar Ray Leonard (winning once but losing twice), Iran Barkley, Davey Moore, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, among many others. Anywhere and whomever he fought he brought to the ring an almost unique menu of boxing, one that would not be his if it did not consist of ferocious and relentless attack.
At 51, Duran was the same 15-year-old kid who loved to fight, the same thrill-seeker who forced the police to dump him to the gym. A footnote, though: He did become fight shy once in his entire career. Duran was 29 when Leonard, in their rematch, boxed him rather than engaged him in a brawl. He would have none of that and said “no mas.”
Excerpts from “Manny Pagquiao – The Greatest Boxer Of All Time”
Read more of it at http://pacmandgoat.ws
Manny can never be Duran. Was Duran a southpaw like Manny? Did Duran have the in-and-out movement and awkward style? Nope!!! Manny is unique! Manny is just Manny!
Also, don’t mess Leonard’s hallowed name with Floyd. Floyd cannot and wont fight toe-to-toe like Leonard.
I think Manny can’t be compared to any past boxers considering his skills and fighting style, but their combinations. I believe that if compare to Duran-Leonard I, Manny is a combination of Duran and Leonard fighting a Leonard in Pity Boy Gayweather. If compare to Ali-Frazier, Pacman is a an Ali and Frazier against a lone Ali in the Pity Boy. Remember, Muhammad Ali himself called Manny a “Little Ali”.
The fight will never happen. Mayweather will out price himself. Mayweather avoids any fighter in their prime in their respected weight class. Oscar was way over the hill, Hatton had to move up 10 lbs, Marquez had to move up 15 lbs. He never fought Margarito, Mosely, or Cotto and now he will avoid The Pac Man!
Remember that Floyd Loudmouthweather Jr. , was behind Ricky Hatton until the Hitman became careless. Pacquiao will not commit the same mistake as Hatton did. Remember that Floyd has brittle hands and tender ribs. Remember again, that Floyd can only shoulder roll on his left. On the matter of running and back pedalling, Floyd may have used more of these techniques, but it is given that Pacquiao has the stamina to chase his opponent too as he has shown when he fought Barrera II when MAB did not like to engage. Finally, Master Roach has a dutiful Pacquiao not a hard-headed Dela Hoya. Remember that the Golden Boy was ahead in the scorecards when he disregarded Roach instruction to get busy with his jabs. Remember that Pacquiao has a more proactive team. This is his Manny’s edge over Floyd.
manny surpass henry armstrong in my opinion but it just me i dont know if anyone will agree but e.steward and l.merchant agrees with me i think
a very accurate analysis brian g…however, if i may add, lyke duran/paquiao, leonard is also the antithesis of moneymayweather, loudmouth, obnoxious, irritating, but slick and a good tactician in the ring, but @the end of the day, questions will be asked, can money withstand the pacman onslaught, as we have seen the other nyte he can take a punch from a legit welter champ whos a hard puncher, in that note we have yet to see money take a punch from a solid welter, say from the likes of sugar shane, andre b, or even the disgraced antonio m.
Definitely Manny can be compare to Duran, Fraizer, and some all time greats but I very much disagree that Floyd can be compare to Ali or Sugar Ray.. c’mon… He only beats B+ fighters to the extent.
Manny will beat Money. Manny is the “Manos de steel” (Hands of Steel).
why would manny dump roach? are you nuts?
the thing is,floyd may have thne best defense but he can’t shoulder roll pacquiao’s powershots with it all night unless he wants his shoulder dislocated. he may have been able to get away with it against slower opponents but pac has the speed to match his.also mayweather has been nearly knocked down by hatton,a natural 140 pounder,on the 1st round of their bout and pacquiao surely hits harder than hitman @ any weight class..also cotto might have a better chin than mayweather and pac put him down twice.sure money has more talents than pac,he can outbox him easily.but that is ONLY IF he can stop pac from landing that big left hand
Manny is no Duran, Duran had some of Manny. Manny got a faster footwork to get
“out” of the way when punches are coming, and can get “in” with a lightning surprise (it’s not boxing my friends it’s Martial Arts footwork ala Bruce Lee).
Power, yeah Duran has it (weigth base ratio). Patience, no. He quitted when Leonard dances. Manny called Cotto, do you want to fight or run? and his coach Roach said Manny go and get him don’t show mercy. So, Manny came on the 12th and said, ok coach. Lucky for Cotto the ref stopped him. Hand speed, nah. Duran is very fast on hands but Manny got blinding hand speed. Duran will attack, attack, and attack. Manny is attack, attack, and attack. It looks the same right? no, Manny attack but can retreat (footwork) to get out in the middle of the actions and boom with such explosive comeback in. My friends no one does better than Manny in Boxing not even Bruce Lee (I’m a million times Bruce Fans than to Manny) I felt bad for Idol Bruce for this it sounds like a blasphemy and a traitor, but I’m not done yet heheeheh. Bruce Lee is so fast to get out and get in with a blinding “KICK” not hands heheheeh. Bruce kicks is just as fast as the great boxer’s hands OPSS Bruce that’s a big compliment okay. Frazier, he attack, attack, and attack. Sound familiar, but he has his hands parry and parry or block and block. Hey, that’s not Manny that I know, Manny will attack and unload six combinations, and then he is gone and boom! he comes back again with another combinations. The guys went down and nobody knows what happened? We need to do a rewind and put a slow motion on what happened. Aha!!! now we got it. That’s how fast he did time and time again to a lot of guys. No blocks and blocks, Manny avoid blows with a strikes of his own at the same time (I don’t wanna say this, because Floyd might backout if he read this comment hehehe) and with power. That’s a gift Manny has right now. There’s a guy I know that can do it like Manny and its faster than Manny but he is old now, and he loves Manny too. I believe this guy has the style to surpassed and make Manny looks slow, but at the present young active fighters, no one come close to Manny, not even Floyd shoulder roll defense, and handspeed. Floyd shoulder defense is not a defense for a southpaw’s blinding handspeed. Look at the position of Manny’s left hand’s hook and Floyd’s position when he is doing the shoulder roll to the right (common guys, close your eyes for a moment Orthodox or right position doing a shoulder roll). Manny will obliterate
Floyd. This is a biginners martial art form. Good bye Floyd defense.
The big difference is that Floyd would never stand and fight like Leonard did with Duran. Floyd wouldn’t stand still long enough for the cameras to focus on him If Floyd is hit like Leonard was against Duran, he would be out cold for a month.
That being said, I hope Pacquaio can catch him and put him out. I’ve been tired of Mayweather since he beat Genaro Hernandez.
One thing that I think an slight edge of Pacquiao over Duran is the speed. It’s the reason why I also want to see the fight Pacquiao vs Mayweather.
Question…Will the showdown btw Pacquiao and Mayweather is the way to determine their status among the all-time greats? Coz I believe, right now or even after the fight, win or loss, Pacquiao boxing achievement is more than Mayweather has.
Comparing Floyd to Ali is ridiculous. Ali is a very charismatic person. Floyd of course we all know his antics. You can not compare Sugar Ray to Floyd either. If Sugar and Floyd happens to be fighting at the same time. Theres no chance for Floyd to show its antics toward Sugar Ray. Pacquiao is not Duran or even Smokin Joe. Manny is fantastic in terms of achievements in different divisions
MAYWEATHER WILL WIN AGAINST PACQUIAO, not because he is the better boxer, but because he is SMARTER. It will be a very sad day for all the boxing fans around the world who’d like to see an exciting, toe-to-toe, no-holds-barred slugfest because Mayweather is going to DISAPPOINT everybody by DANCING AWAY from the iron clad fist of the Pacman and strutting his shoulder rolls for defense while winning round after round BY POINTS. He has done it against light-punching, overrated boxers before, so there’s no reason why he won’t do it against Pacquiao whose fists must be made of plaster of Greek god Zeus. Hate to see blood-frightened Floyd getting all the credits for his boring style of fight, but sadly speaking that’s the truth. PACMAN has already PROVEN he is one of the best boxers of all time. It’s time to retire while a champ. At the “level of greatness” he claims he has, Mayweather has NO DAMN BUSINESS to do in welterweight. If he wants to do a PACMAN, he needs to step up and fight bigger men PAVLIK, WILLIAMS, KESSLER and ABRAM. Beat them all and he’ll get my respect.
I just don’t know why these guys put Mayweather on no. 2 in the pound for pound list just for beating (in a boring unanimous decision) the aging urine-drinker Marquez. You lost your heads!!!
Mayweather will never be a Leonard, when Sugar Ray retired and returned to the ring he always chooses the bigger and champion fighters to fight like Marvin Hagler and Donny Lalonde, unlike Gayweather who cherry picks a smaller and slower opponents no comparison, Leonards loves to engage while Mayweather likes to run and hug.
Manny is Manny…mayweather is mayweather…If they (PAC&MONEY) fight you can’t compare them to any other great fighters. They are all great fighters..But one thing to look at is which weapon would be more effective..The guy who has an unlimited offensive power that knows how to defend himself, or the guy who has an amzing defensive style that knows hows to punch too..My opinion the guy who will take punches to throw a harder punch will win..(PACMAN)..Im not being biased..if you just think about it,,do you think mayweather can just outbox Pacquiao for even a full round? at some point they will have to fight because pacquiao’s in the ring..The question is who’s punch will be more effective? ..you’ll be the judge..Pacquiao’s used to getting hit,,is mayweather used to that? he’s confidence will be shaken everytime pacquiao lands a punch, specially if he cuts him, (mayweather),,he’s known as the pretty boy,,,.pacquiao wont mind if he gets cut.. with mayweather?well find out…but one thing’s for sure,,after the fight he will not look like a pretty boy cause he’s in for a true fight..This is the first time both of these fighters will fight an all time great fighter..but pacquiao in my opinion has all the advantages in pressure type of fight with so much hype…You can watch thier previous fights and then ask yourself who do you think would win…the answer’s easy… THE MAN WITH BIGGEST HEART, WHO REALLY WANTS TO WIN…
Super article. Very astute points.
“So violent that he probably considered monetary compensation as just a bonus while he beat the hell out of people”
…best line I have ever read about ANY fighter!
Pacquiao is a much difficult opponent technically to Mayweather than Duran was to Leonard. With Duran, Leonard actually knew where he was going to be: close and up front incessantly shooting heavily loaded punches. With Pacquiao, Mayweather won’t have this luxury. Pacquiao can be anywhere throwing bombs at unorthodox angles. The only comparison between Duran and Pacquiao would be their unfailing love to inflict some sort of controlled injury to their opponents.
Just to let you all know if Manny wants to he can beat Floyd in his own game.Dont forget the only reason Manny gets hit is cause he like it and he wants the ko and he’s a warrior.Manny is fast enough technical enough to beat Mayweather at his own game.don’t be surprised if it happens that probably the only way to beat Floyd.
Are some posts insinuating that Manny is better than Duran?
Didn’t JMM found the Pacman enough to win most rounds when they fought?
Oscar just couldn’t pull the trigger, but he said he saw the opennings…LOL
Hatton landed, it just that he got taken out to fast to make an assessment base on that fight alone.
Pacman is not the invisible man, if JMM could make him pay, Floyd does it twice better.
Clotto Landed some heavey shots, is just that he had no defence to avoid the early KOs. Floyd can whoop the Pacman. I took $100 bet on Floyd when Pacman was an 8-5 favorite. Good bet since if and when they fight Floyd might be favorite.
For me Manny is the combination of both Duran and Leonard.
Jesus, you fail to realize that Pac fought Juan at 130, he’s a lot better now. You think Marquez would have been able to hang with Cotto? I doubt that. Pac has improved, Marquez has regressed. Partially due to age and size.
Wow is crazy how some off u guys say floyd be cherry picking his oppents.
What about pac man he beat eric morales when morales was more than half way out the door oh morales beat him too.
Same thing whit barera but barera just had no answer ill give u that.
Marquez beat him twice on points even when pac was clear ly the bigger man.
Davis diaz was not even a b class fighter.
De la hoya lost like every fight but one to a bum in his last fights.
Hatton hasn’t been the same fighter since mayweather rost him I mean he had trouble taking out paully.
JCotto man since margarita try to kill him in the ring mentally is not ther at all if clottey would off had the killing insting cotto pac would off never happened
Pac is good but too. Over rated duran would off ko him whit heavy weight gloves.
Borden is stupid and wrongheaded. He owns a dictionary of alibis and excuses. Together with the Gayweathers, their predictions is zero percent.
What has Juan Manuel Marquez ever accomplished above 135 pounds? Featherweights (aside from Manny and Armstrong) don’t beat top welters. And JMM’s still a great fighter; but it’s ridiculous to compare the feather JMM (and the 130 version) to the welter version. JMM’s lop-sided loss shows how freakish Pac’s accomplishment is.
Question: How would JMM have faired against Cotto last Saturday night? And I consider JMM a better P4P fighter than Miguel, but size counts for MOST:) fighters. Pac’s just a freak.
Great fighter as you are if you have one no mas…. no mas fight like Duran your greatness is nothing. Cotto is great fighter than Duran.
there is no way mayweather will last against a heavy hitting and smart fighter who will just come in to knock him out. once he hits pacman, manny will just come in harder. once gayweather get hit, he’ll run for sure.
defense? forget it. the best athletes of all time are great because they attack. the shoulder roll will not be effective, manny will come in with the left hook and knock pbf to gay county. try using your shoulder to block against 700+ hard hits.. see what happens. those who use floyds current defense as his reason to win are missing the point. he has to adapt to manny’s game… or he’s gonna get knocked the F out.
The realities of Cotto Titles;
He never beat a seating champion for legitimate title.
Notice the word “vacant” infront of every title.
vacant WBO welterweight title = Michael Jennings
vacant WBA World welterweight title = Carlos Quintana
vacant WBO light welterweight title = Kelson Pinto
vacant WBC International light welterweight title = Cesar Bazan
I keep hearing about Pac/Marquez. What about Floyd/Judah? Zab was a fast southpaw with power. Pac has more intelligence, and he doesn’t go to sleep after a few rounds. I don’t think Pac, for instance, would lose to a Carlos Baldomir type.
Guys, Manny’s 6-7 handspeed combination plus power will destroy Mayweather. The best defense in the world will have no effect and Why? 3 punches will get in
the very minimum hit either to the face or body of Mayweather. Those punches will
carry power and everybody knows that, no more hiding secret for Manny. We all know he got rediculous power beside his rediculous handspeed and footwork. On Mayweather side, I’m a fighter myself, I studied fight and tried to apply it. Its really hard to create power when you are back pedaling (backward move, and yes, you can lunched punches but with no effect especially against a fighter who got an iron chin like Manny. You can score points though by doing this, and floyd might the best in the business when it comes to punching while back pedaling next to Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. But the question is, Who is Floyd fighting? Its the guy whose footwork is faster than him. Manny will eventually kick Floyd’s behind you know. In Muhammad Ali, his opponent has no footwork faster than him, and Sugar Ray has no opponent who got footwork faster than him also, but Manny definitely has footwork faster than Floyd like Bruce Lee. Shoulder roll defense of Floyd ala Rope a dope of Muhammad Ali will not work and Why? Manny is Southpaw, meaning the left is in perfect position to hit the chin or body against a rigth handed or orthodox position when it roll to the right. I will tell tell you I am not even a professional fighter if an exhibition game against me against Floyd, and I am just 5′5 in heigth, and 127 pounds, and 40 yrs old. I said, just for fun exhibition game. If floyd just play his defense against me and not punching me okay ( I don’t wanna get knockout). I will challenge Floyd, he will get hit 3 out of my 6-7 combinations every single time in 100 times repetition not just one time because you guys might say I’m lucky. The 3 punches that gets in is just the minimum. It is scary confidence from me. Now, can you believe what Pacquiao will do to Mayweather, and his confidence against Mayweather. If Mayweather read this article from me, he can research my name through this blog and call me. If I prove myself to him, he might not as well fight Manny Pacquiao. I am bragging, right? well, for me to have this against Floyd that’s rediculous!!!! yes, I know what you are thinking…I’m crazy. Yes, I am definitely crazy but you have to see my speed first before you will make an assumption hehehe. Friends, there’s a guy actually has a little similarities with Pacquiao style, it’s Edwin Valero from Venezuela. If you guys want a very, very exciting fight, then it’s him against Pacquiao. Edwin got power and speed but less develop power of his right arm, and the speed is a little bit close but not quite like Manny. Oh, by the way Valero is left handed too, a southpaw. I said exciting, but Valero will not last long either.
Okay, so in short I see trouble for Mayweather if he fights Manny because Manny is the fighter who can change gear into the next level when he needs to. It could be footwork or a power and speed of the hands. Don’t get me wrong, Mayweather is a smart and great, great, great boxer, but Manny is just better than him. I don’t see Mayweather outpower and outspeed Manny at all. Hmmn maybe, he will outsmart and outbox Manny. But if you really think about Manny, Manny still has 55 fights against 40 fights of Mayweather, and by far Manny got a lot of fights against clever fighter, and he made it look easy too. I was talking about experience in the ring, so I don’t give floyd an edge to this category either. Let’s compare their footwork…in here, I can’t give Mayweather the edge either because they have different style and both fast with their style, nah…Manny’s legs speed is too much. Defense…yeah, I give it to Mayweather base on his previous fight but we are dealing with Manny who is definitely faster than the guys who Mayweather fights, that’s not an edge for him either. I don’t know folks but every category I’ve mentioned, Manny has an edge…don’t worry, I can really understand you that I’m just a big bias because I’m a Manny Pacquiao fans. I can accept that definitely. But don’t bet too much money against Manny in the day when Floyd face Manny in the ring because I don’t want you to get heart broken that much. I know Manny like I know mysell hehehe blah, blah, blah from me. That’s okay too.
Manny hands’ speed is slightly slower than Floyd. Floyd has a 5 inch reach advantage. I say that is more than enough to win most rounds against Pacman. Floyd know how to use his advantages better than anyone I have ever seen. Floyd is bar far the better boxer, he makes it look easy. After the fight against JMM he barely had a scratch on his face. After the Oscar fight same thing and ditto for Hatton. Pacman is great, but Floyd is greater in boxing abilities bare generations.
Floyd makes it look easy against the Pac in a 12 snooze if Pacman become overly aggressive he could get KO. Is not like Floyd doesn’t have the speed to deal with Pacman’s speed, ditto for stamina. After Floyd beats Pacman all of you will come back here and cry about Floyd not engaging the Pacman enough, but remember why engage the Pacman when Floyd can win easy fighting from a distance. Pacman is open to counter by someone with the hand speed and counter punches abilities of Floyd. Pacman over commit himself and ends up off balance when he throws the straight left or any other of his power punches for that matter.
Pacman is fast on his feet, but his hand speed is greatly exaggerated, he is not as fast a Floyd with the hand speed.
Handspeed’s equal IMHO, and Floyd’s faced at 147 one “sort of” Pac (Judah), who was giving him a lot of problems until he did his usual pack-it-in after a few good rounds. And the DLH and Hatton fights were much more competitive with Floyd than with Pac–and they didn’t occur 4 divisions apart from the Pac fights (unlike Floyd/JMM).
Floyd will use his reach advantage and speed to counter and leave. But Pacquaio will continue to stalk and and prepare his combos once Floyd begins to block with his shoulder. Because Pacquaio is a southpaw and left handed, his main power punch will come from the side that Mayweather had never defended from. As this fight will go to a decision, but Pacquaio should be able to get in enough combos to slow Floyd down from utilizing his jab and run style.
Didn’t see the fight between Duran and Leonard but as I recall, Duran was in his prime, fighting all the time like Pacquiao, knocking most opponents he faced. Duran was an aggresive, hard punching, non-stop action fighter. He was the hero of the Panamanians. Like Duran, Pacquiao is an icon of the Phillipines now.
This first match of possible 2 or three, Pacquiao will win; he cannot lose the first one. No way, is it possible he loses.
Consider all the factors that are involved in this fight: Current psychological states of two fighters, the team or the country that’s behind them, the socio-economic history and their goals of these fighter. Who or which team sees the big picture after this fight? Which camp has clearer understanding of how this boxing world works.
Pacquiao will and has to win the first fight. It will take a miracle for Mayweather to win. Overwhelming odds are against him whichever/however you look.
Mayweather will comeback but after experiencing his first loss.
may weather wins cause he wont stop boxin manny cotto looked good and was effective when he boxed but when he tried to slug it out he got his A$$ handed 2 him mayweater picks his shot and out boxex pac a win in 12 and u mayweather hater will say o he ran all night not but the object of boxing is 2 hit and not get hit right
The closest comparison to see how Mayweather will do, is his fight with Oscar. Oscar is the only fighter that is in the same class as Pacquaio (even though he lost to Manny, he’s career is to great to not take notice). Oscar found spots that all of Floyd’s previous never were able to utilize. Oscar used his speed to slow down Floyd’s speed and defense. But Oscar was very skillful enough to close the ring, so Floyd could not escape once Oscar threw his punches. To me it was a closer fight than most remembered. I believe, one judge had Oscar. If Manny’s corner studied this fight, it maybe the best insight on Floyd’s weaknesses. Floyd doensn’t have many flaws except the power of his punches. But its been awhile since I seen Floyd fight anybody in the welterweight division since Oscar. Marquez is a great fighter who probably could’ve been more of a challenge had he been able to fight a couple of times at that weight class, but unlike Manny, he wasn’t able to bring his power and strength as he moved up in weight. But whoever wins the fight truly signifies the pound for pound king. If Floyd wins, goes up in weight to fight Chad Dawson or Paul Williams, then I would put him in the same status with Manny. If Manny loses, he already jumped up 7 weight divisions and fought the best in every weight, so props to all that he’s already accomplished.
