HOW MUCH LONGER WILL BOXING BOW TO PACQUIAO?

New York, NY- Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs), the biggest name in boxing, is fighting this weekend, keeping the world of boxing journalism once again hostage to his seemingly unstoppable cult of personality. He is fighting Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs), whose only real loss is against Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KOs)—he also lost to Antonio Margarito’s (37-6, 27 KOs) cement bags and a pre-Gatti Carlos Baldomir (45-12-6, 14 KOs). The fight promises to be as droning and uneventful as the tone of the beginning of this article, because the frivolous celebrity world has corrupted the boxing landscape so much that any fight that isn’t Pacquiao-Mayweather is irrelevant. It’s a shame, because these two (and Clottey deserves recognition for this as well) are two of the most predictable, tiresome fighters in the game. Well, at least Mayweather’s performance-enhancing background is clear.
GETTING THE PREDICTION OUT OF THE WAY
Like every boxing pundit, I have a responsibility to make a prediction in Saturday’s fight. It is the single most important fight of the year so far, somehow, and it merits the attention. And by “somehow” I mean because the sport’s biggest names have been too busy accusing each other of steroid use and then not agreeing to the test that would end the discussion to prove it. Sure the complaints on the Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) side of the aisle can get irritating, but it takes two to do the work required to close the case on the steroid constroversy for a long enough time for fans to get a satisfying fight. As for my prediction? Pacquiao will win. Of course he will win—what’s to stop a man who, as Paul Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KOs) put it on Ringtalk Radio last weekend, keeps going up and up in weight and getting hit by bigger and bigger fighters with impunity? Certainly not a fighter like Clottey, who, while deserving of tremendous respect for his record so far, is not anywhere near the level of talent that many of Pacquiao’s recent fallen victims have been. Cotto, Hatton, and even an old Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) are far superior boxers, and yet they found themselves unable to respond to Pacquiao’s punches, as well as unable to get to the smaller fighter’s chin. Given his track record, I have to respectfully disagree with our own Jarrad Woods and say that Clottey really doesn’t stand a chance.
WIN-WIN FOR THE BOXER FORMERLY KNOWN AS ‘MUNCHKIN MANNY’
The Catch-22 here for Clottey is that Pacquiao will win even if he loses, because if he loses he will dispel the steroid rumors from the minds of many people, and if he wins, his core fan base, who care little about whether Pacquiao is pumping himself with steroids or gasoline at this point, will keep buying what he has to sell. In fact, should the pressure on him from the boxing community continue to snowball and his team continue to refuse the steroid testing, it may be in Pacquiao’s best interest to lose. But that’s not going to happen on Saturday night. It’s only recently that the voices in the community calling for Pacquiao to be tested have grown loud enough for the mainstream to hear, and it will take even more time for the clamor to bring about a serious investigation into the standard operating procedure at Pacman HQ. Except it to grow stronger as the pressure on Mayweather to make a move towards fighting Pacquiao grows, especially if he defeats Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) in May (not at all a certainty for the undefeated fighter).
YES, PACQUIAO IS BAD FOR THE SPIRIT OF BOXING
While we wait for the sanctioning bodies to make a move on this under-wraps steroid scandal, a part of possible boxing lore dies, and much more worthy and talented characters that are unfortunate enough to fight during the age of Pacman continue to lurk under the shadows, where we can’t see them. At least when Margarito cheated, he only took Kermit Cintron’s (32-2-1, 28 KOs) career with him down the drain. Pacquiao has left entire weight divisions in the dust, and now we’re so close to finding out he’s been cheating this whole time we can taste the deceit. It’s a tired metaphor, but it’s never been more appropriate to call a fighter a cancer on the game as it is today to describe Pacquiao in such terms. Many commenters here argued previously that Pacquiao is the only thing keeping the sport alive when, in fact, boxing has survived despite his existence, not because of it. Pacquiao is a hero because he makes movies and sings songs and has a colorfully scandalous love life—his work in the ring, while brilliant on paper, is under serious suspicion that Pacquiao and his trainer, Freddie Roach, refuse to acknowledge. He has very little discernable boxing skill, relying only on his chaotic punching and seemingly indomitable chin to get him through. And it does, but that shouldn’t be the example for upcoming fighters to follow. The sport should be generating more interest in the sweet science of it, not in the brawling. That’s what MMA is for.

Geez where to start with this article! Clottey’s only real loss is to Cotto..? I thought he should have gotten a draw.. His only “real” loss should have been versus Baldy! DQ is a DQ! I ask you to find any rational boxing fan to back you up on that….and that includes Pedro Fernandez, who certainly despises Pacquiao — but is someone who I assume is knowledgeable enough about boxing to recognize (albeit reluctantly) that Pacquiao possesses a tremendous amount of not only talent, but skill. Also, look at any fighter’s interview regarding Pacquiao and they’ll likely reveal the same….If a fighter can win so many fights by doing nothing more than chaotically swinging their arms and juicing up during training, then I don’t see why more fighters don’t do it — especially in light of the fact that there is no way to get caught under the current system of testing right? RIGHT.
Also, regarding your stance about Pacquiao alleged Steriod use — although a lot has recently been said about the steroid use and testing, the fact is, Pacquiao has done nothing to implicate himself of steroid use. Also, there is absolutely ZERO evidence to implicate Pacquiao of steriod use. You, Malignaggi, and the Mayweathers are predicating your accusation of Pacquiao’s alleged steroid use on nothing more than his recent trend of dominance. If you are going to accuse Pacquiao of steroid, then it at least should be based on something more substantial than Malignaggi’s assertions, even if he does possess tremendous scientific knowledge of how the human body should respond to punches and weight gain….He is a prominent figure in that area as well right? Based on how he acts and talks about the situation, he certainly makes himself out to be.
Also, your reference to Pacquiao and Clottey as being two of the most tiresome fighters in the game is comical to say the least. However, I’m glad you included it in the beginning of your article because it gave me an opportunity to immediately realize not only the absurdity of this article, but your capacity as a self-proclaimed boxing pundit.

I do not believe that PBF can dictate the rules of the sport, and not the Governing Body. If you want to play the game, just obey the rules….not change them! Frances is correct, when she says that Pacquiao is bad for boxing. Because Pac is a fraud, that gets away with undetectable EPO (hormones/steroids), that gives him extra stamina and strength. EPO can only be caught within 48 hrs. of its use, with a certain blood test. Urine tests dont catch EPO. And Urine drug tests is what all the commission only perform. This is how Pacquiao (like Shane Mosley), slip by and get away with the illegal banned substance EPO, and which is how they’re able to perform above expectations in the ring.
Now the boxing media is being misled by a falsely generated Pacquiao.
This can all be setteled if Pac Man gets tested (Olympic Style)…there has to be a reason why he and his team are so against it.

Wow. And people call me a hater. One thing that everyone I have discussed Pacquiao’s alleged PED use agree on: no drug in the world can make you a better boxer. Ask Fernando Vargas how using roids worked out. James Toney was already a master boxer when he used them in his fights with John Ruiz and Danny Batchelder. Shane Mosley actually looked worse to me when he rematched DLH. Roids can help you make an opponent miss, turn him and then land a brutal counter as Manny did against Hatton. That requires years of training and endless drills on mitts and in sparring to perfect.
Now I don’t know .Frances Martel. I don’t know is she is has ever boxed or been in a boxing gym. Fact is, this might be the only article of hers I have ever read. Nothing else comes to mind.So based on that, it reads like someone who covers some other type of news covering our sport for an editorial. It has misinformed facts and is filled with opinion which she is entitled to. But considering Pedro used to be a cop and should know the law, I’d think he’d be more careful allowing flawed facts on his site. But what do I know, I’m just a boxing writer.
I do know that Manny has never accused Floyd of using PEDs. Not to my knowledge and I would think, as a writer who actually goes to that gym to get his coverage, I would have heard that one.
Ms. Martel exonerated Floyd of PED use which we can’t know until we take old blood samples from past tests, DNA or a maybe a spinal fluid to determine his innocence. We just have his word and the same negative result test results Manny has been getting for years. Personally, I wouldn’t trust Floyd to tell me what time it is. In my experience, he has trouble answering questions in a straight forward manner.
What we do know about these two is this: at age 16, Floyd fought as an amateur at 106 lbs. At age 16, Manny turned pro at 106 lbs. They have since traversed the same weights divisions (Floyd as an amateur and pro, Manny as a pro) with Mayweather having actually fought one division higher. Both have been successful doing so. In fact, Floyd was every bit as explosive when he took on Arturo Gatti in a 6 round route. Was he juicing? Or was it matchmaking? Both? I don’t know. He only took a piss test. Floyd also scored a KO against Ricky Hatton at 147 pounds. Like Manny, he walked Hatton into a shot he didn’t see coming and stopped him. Was it matchmaking? Hatton had looked like shit at 147 in his previous attempt. Or was Floyd juicing? Maybe he’s just a good boxer or all three. I can’t answer about juicing. He only took a piss test.
In the end, why Floyd asked Manny to random blood test is only known by him. He might be jealous Manny gets all the love or he may think he is really on something. Or it could be like all the right wing religious conservatives who point the ugly stick at the other party and then get caught themselves screwing male interns and prostitutes. Sometimes, hell, a lot of times, the accuser is the biggest abuser of them all.
Why question is why now? Why with Manny? After having made Marquez move to welterweight, a guy who looked like he was maxing out at 135 lbs, why the sudden need for an even playing field? If you knew a guy had to move up in weight two divisions in one camp, wouldn’t you be more concerned with him using steroids? I know I would.

During a time long ago when we had real journalism in this country, a writer and an article like this would have never made it past the editor. I don’t even know where to begin, it’s so bad on every level. At one time this was a real boxing website, but for some reason Pedro seems to believe that having a staff member on who has no writing ability but is able to provoke a lot of controversy is good for his web traffic. It seems like Pedro and Francis believe that a great article results in as many reader responses as possible even if a vast majority of those responses are negative. Sad. Francis has no talent and little boxing knowledge.

Let’s be honost. This is about the May/Pac fight. I don’t agree with some of the things said in the article. I do know that for 30 million or more anyone should take any kind of drug test. There’s two reasons not to, guilty and dumb. I don’t like Mays mouth and antics but I have the utmost respect for his boxing skills. As for Pac, one has to respect what he’s done to this point. The fact they didn’t fight this time is sad and a shame but will only beef up the desire for the fight to take place after both of them beat two good, solid opponents. I’m wondering why there are so many comments about Mayweather on the site when the whole article is about Pac. Mayweather is selling this fight more than Manny or Clottey combined. You cannot find a read that mentions Pac w/o Mayweather (while May/Mosley is doing just fine on its own) but he is the face of boxing. These same blood cells carry hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. Do You Know things like this FRANCES MARTEL? Manny Got his strength because he is not dehydrated in the welterweight division and the fact that he is doing new sets of exercises put up by his strentgh conditioning coach Alex Ariza since the David Diaz fight.
