San Francisco, CA- When you combine boxing, MMA and professional wrestling, boxers per se, well they don’t fare well popularity wise on the Internet. According to Google statistics from January 1, 2011 to July 22, 2011, the most popular performer was WWE performer and movie star Dwayne “The Rock Johnson. The runner up was the late Randy Poffo AKA Randy Savage, who died a couple of months from a heart attack while driving in Florida. The 54-year old Poffo/Savage hadn’t appeared on a wrestling TV show since a cameo appearance on TNA Wrestling in 2003. Holding down the same spot he held in 2010, Manny Pacquiao, boxing most illustrious performer ranked #3 in the US. The WWE’s John Cena, ranked #1 in 2010, dropped to #4.Floyd Mayweather Jr. made #5, this after placing #9 last year. No other boxer placed in the top 50 except Shane Mosley at #15 and WBA/IBF 140 lb. champion Amir Khan who made #44 on the United States Google hit list. The retiring wrestler known as Edge was #5, followed by UFC champ Georges St. Pierre. Rounding out the top ten were Randy Orton (WWE), UFC champ Anderson Silva placed eighth, followed by Mayweather and Brock Lesnar, ex-UFC champ Brock Lesnar placed #10.
WORLDWIDE GOOGLE RANKINGS INCLUDE PACQUIAO, MAYWEATHER & CENA
Globally, John Cena was the most popular of wrestlers, boxers and MMA stars. The aforementioned Georges St. Pierre was #2. The rest of the list was dominated by wrestling and MMA stars seeing Manny Pacquiao placed #9, dropping two slots from #7 in 2010. The British dog that was all bark and no bite, David Haye checked in at #14, while Mayweather held down the #24 slot.
DANA WHITE BEATS PACQUIAO IN CANADA
Dropping from #7 in 2010, Manny Pacquiao placed #9 in Canadian Google hits. Native son Georges St. Pierre took the top Canadian spot, Randy Poffo/Savavge was #2. The #3 & #4 slots went to Anderson Silva (UFC) and John Cena (WWE). UFC executive Dana White took the #5 position. The only other boxer on the Canadian list was Shane Mosley who came in at #16.
NEITHER KLITSCHKO BROTHER IN THE TOP 50!
Being as popular as they are in Europe, I thought that either Wladimir Klitschko or brother Vitali would have placed in the top 50 of Google hits worldwide. That didn’t happen, which surely proves that the old adage, “He who controls the heavyweight championship controls boxing,” is not applicable in 2011.
