ESPN 2 FIGHTS WERE IN SIN CITY
Las Vegas, NV- Miguel Vazquez W10 Breidis Prescott: Tall lightweights faced off with the man that KO’d Amir Khan, Breidis Prescott (21-1-0-18 KOs) getting the better of the tough Miguel Vazquez (25-3-0-12 KOs) during the early going. However Vazquez overcame a first round knockdown and dominated the Colombian Prescott from the third round on. When a split decision was announced a worried Vazquez held his breath. Scores: 95-94 & 96-93 for Vazquez, the third card inexplicably read 97-92 for Prescott.
Erislandy Lara UD 6 Darnell Boone: Widely thought of as the best prospect of the recent Cuban defectors, Lara (7-0, 4 KOs) had an easy night against journeyman Boone (16-12-2-6 KOs), who survived a shaky finale. Scores: 60-54 twice & 59-55.
Guillermo Rigondeaux KO 1 Robert Guillen: Another highly touted Cuban defector Rigondeaux (2-0, 2 KOs) easily knocked out overmatched Robert Guillen (4-3-2, N0 KOs) with a body shot at 2:57 of #1.
Yudel Johnson UD 4 Justin Paolo: Cuba’s Yudel Johnson (2-0, 1 KO) pitched a four round shutout over Paolo (1-1, NO KOs) with scores of 40-36 on all three cards.
TELMUNDO TRYING HARD TO ELEVATE VAZQUEZ
Kissimmee, FL- Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. KO 2 Cecilio Santos
The son of two-time WBA champ Wilfredo Vazquez, Wilfredo Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs) knocked out the usually durable trialhorse Santos (23-11-3, 13 KOs) at 2:59 of #2 with a hook to the body.
Jonathan Cepeda KO 6 Vladimir Laguna: If it went the distance scoring would have been tricky. Cepeda (6-0, 5 KOs) was penalized two points for twice hitting Laguna (1-2, NO KOs) while he was down in #2. Laguna was later deducted a point for holding. The end came at 1:03 of #6.
SATURDAY RESULTS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE
Manchester, UK- Amir Khan (21-1, 15 KOs) UD 12 Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs) vs. (WBA 140 lb. title) Scores: 120-108 & 118-110 twice. Denis Lebedev (18-0, 13 KOs) TKO 3 Enzo Maccarinelli (29-4, 22 KOs)
Mexicali, Mexico- Martin Castillo (34-3, 18 KOs) KO 1 Alfredo Montano (9-9, 5 KOs)

Amir Khan didn’t impress me much…all he did was hit and run. he put no power on his shots, and mostly just flurried away at Kotelniks gloves. There was no committement whatsoever in his attack. The game plan worked, but it was a display that showed that his victory reminded me of an amatuer fight. He did little to no damage on his opponnent, and his unwillingness to engage makes me feel that once he steps in with an aggressive fighter, his days are numbered…I just can’t enjoy or appreciate a fighter who won’t engage…Kotelnik was frustrated, because Khan didn’t really want to fight. Khan is still young and has a lot to learn, but he isn’t the real deal, and Roach knows that the only way for this guy to win at the top level is to stink the joint out.
Mr. Fernandez, is it true that while being suspended in Ca. Jack Riess refereed a WBC title fight in Mexico this last Saturday the 18th?
I will look into this Tuesday. Did you see video, or are there written accounts of Reiss working?
Agree with KP’s view of Khan.
Yes, Pedro, Reiss (according to Fightnews.com) worked the Tomas Rojas WBC interim super flyweight title bout this past Saturday night.
I though Khans performance was great, the fight was a complete shut out. Afterall this is boxing and Khan put on nothing short of a tactical masterclass. Nobody had Kotelnik on their P4P list and his KO record wasnt the best – but a world chapion all the same and he was SCHOOLED, even if Khan wasnt all guns blazing he had the superior skills.
He has good power and should have backed Kotelnik up more, but with the prescott fight in mind and the fact this was hid 1st world title fight – its completely understandable. I guess we’ll see what happens from here. I scored the fight every round for Khan bar 1, thats impressive in anyones books – but KP is right, it did look a bit like an amatuer fight.
To spice things up, I watched Naseem Hameds first world title challenge immediately after, now that was a show.
