San Francisco, CA- Once the “King of Promoting” worldwide, boxing promoter and staunch Republican Don King is almost a footnote in boxing history? I mean, since the “Bite Fight” between Evander “The Victim” Holyfield and Mike “The Predator” Tyson, what has Don King done? Promote John Ruiz, Nicolay Valuev, and the ever so uninspiring Devon Alexander, one could lay a stake to the claim that Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya have run the Donald out of the fight business.
MAYFIELD RELEASE BETTER THAN OLD DON’S
The rotund Mario Serrano, excellent publicist that he is, broke in pushing Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. Having done that with superlative results, and oh yeah, the fighter keeps winning, his latest client Karim Mayfield, a welterweight (147 lbs) out of San Francisco, unbeaten at 13-0-1, 8 KOs and fighting Friday on ESPN 2, Mayfield got more media play than Don King this week trying to resurrect Devon Alexander.
SAW VIDEO, KARIM WAS TAGGING MANNY GOOD!
That being said, Karim was kicking Manny Pacquiao’s butt some in training for the Shane Mosley fight. This is the same fighter that Sergio Mora sent home last autumn because Karim was kicking his ass, this as he prepped for Shane Mosley. “Sergio, his sending me home after two days was a badge of honor. I was kicking his ass pretty good,” said the San Franciscan.
PHOENIX’S JOE DIAZ GETTING LOUDER DAY BY DAY
Trainer Joe Diaz, felled by a massive heart attack a month ago, continues to improve and has become a “pain in the ass” for some of the hospital staff where he is recovering in Phoenix. Never one to be shy when it comes to dropping “F Bombs,” I’m glad he is doing so because it won’t be long before Diaz enters another phase of rehabilitation that should have him home in about six more weeks.
PHYSICAL THERAPY & VERBAL ABUSE PART OF RECOVERY
Diaz, 70, owner of the Top Level Gym, a successful operation until Bob Arum’s Top Rank, elected Arizona politicos like Mary “Sleazy Rose” Wilcox, and the ex-Arizona Athletic Commission tried ruining his life and anybody that had the balls to back Diaz who was victimized by fraudulent affidavits, conspiracy among politicians and Arizona boxing boss John Montano, has been heard cussing quite a bit and is still referring to a certain Las Vegas promoter as a, “No Good Rock Sucker.” Yeah, Joe’s on the mend alright!
