WON’T BE A FIGHT FOR VERY LONG
Las Vegas, NV- Having went to the usual haunts to talk boxing this week, the Mexican taco joints, sports bars, the car wash, it seems people await Manny Pacquiao’s challenge of Miguel Cotto this Saturday with a high level of expectation that the fight will deliver.
SIZE KILLS AND SO DOES COTTO
There comes a time when even the great Roberto Duran, a champion at 135, 147, 154, & 160 lbs., he turned professional at 122 lbs., he got to a point where “size” was just too much. Now we take Miguel Cotto, a strong as a bull fighter with “wrecking ball” punching power, and put him in with a man that ascended 40 lbs. At some point and time a fighter bites off too much, and Cotto is all that and more!
COTTO WAS THE “FRANCHISE” FIGHTER
A seasoned pro after a successful amateur stint, Cotto, until Manny Pacquiao came along, was the Top Rank flagship. The heir apparent to the great success of countrymen like Wilfredo Gomez, Edwin Rosario, and Felix Trinidad, Cotto was the “franchise” and still may be for Top Rank. Having promotional ties to both fighters, promoter Bob Arum is in a “win-win” situation. But Cotto has a lot to prove here, while Pacman does not. Pac can lose and go out and still fight Floyd Mayweather, as Pac-Floyd isn’t even a contest, and neither is Cotto-Pac.
THE SIZE FACTOR IS NO JOKE!
The size differential here cannot be offset by nutrients or work ethic. Cotto, and this is where it scary for Pacman fans, Miguel Cotto will weigh over 155 lbs. come fight time. He has one of the best left hooks in the business, can crack with the right as well can Miguel. What he does for the most part is he beats you up in increments. And to quote San Francisco’s Larry “The Lip” Albert, “When Cotto hits you, it stays with you. Not too many people can punch hard like that.”
MISMATCH IN TRUE LIFE
In what may end being a mismatch of gigantic proportions, Manny Pacquiao, the man that turned professional 40 lbs. ago, is in the ring with a man that is physically stronger than him, and while Cotto is not afraid of Pacman per se, he will exercise good judgment as Cotto will stalk Pac from the start. When Pac stops and fires, doesn’t land with the money punch, the left cross, and being too far away to use the right hook as a weapon, Manny Pacquiao has reached the point of no return.
BASIC BOXING MOVES MAKE THIS COTTO’S FIGHT
When a fighter that is looking to assert size advantages can cut off the ring, as Cotto can, that makes the task of the Pacman more daunting. Unless he wants to get his head taken off, Manny will have to fight Cotto as some point and time. And whether he is ahead or behind, it doesn’t matter, because in this case, size kills and Manny is done!

size is a factor and cotto is big compared to pac but the fact of the matter is that cotto is also gonna lose a lot of weight. any athlete is gonna know that losing an extra 2 lbs is gonna effect you.
do the research, cotto has been looking drained for losing a lot of weight. cotto was even having a hard time making weight at 147. how much more for 145?
and just like your article about duran, sugar leanard had the speed to overcome durans power.
speed, power, precision, better shap, more natural weight, and the x factor of pacman having a world reknown trainer (cotto’s trainer is really a nutritionist) are going to be advantages for pacman.
I see cotto wining this fight based on physical advantages, cotto will enter the ring weighting around 160 lbs. pacquiao has never been hit by a true welter weight. so nobody knows how is pacquiao going to take cottos punches, because trust me on this one…he will be punched. cotto will not be drained as de la hoya was and he will not face pacquiao with the guard down like hatton did. i know that cotto can take a punch from a welter weight and he also hits like a welter weight, do you really think pacquiao will be able to resist cottos power? while pacquiao needs punching volume, all cotto needs its a single well connected punch and pacquia will be ktfo.
I am a big fan of Pedro, but he will be wrong again on Saturday night. Pacquiao stops Cotto on cuts in the 8th or less.

Very intresting Pedro i am very anxious to see how this plays out. In my head I have been trying to use previous fighters and fights to compare this to.I figured hatton would give the pacman a somewhat of a fight after the dehydrated goldenboy.My gut tells me cotto will take this one.I mean in the last three fights david diaz is the only one who put up a fight so thats why I think cotto is coming away with the win on sat.Looking forward to your prediction tommorrow!
I don’t think Cotto is the destroyer you say he is Pedro. It seems to me Clottey had a clean face after they fought, and we all know that Margo took everything Cotto threw at him. Mosley is still better than ever and got better after fighting Cotto and is the legitimate welter champ. Judah was a Junior welter with a soft chin, who was KO by one righthand(the chicken dance KO) by Kostya Tszyu. It took Cotto eleven rounds and dirty tactics to beat Judah. The Mosley fight could have gone either ways and I felt Mosley was the victor, the Clottey fight could have gone either way also. He is not the killer your portraying Pedro.

Love Cotto and all but don’t see Pedro’s prediction being anything close to accurate. It’s a bit funny b/c it’s so biased it’s unreal. Cotto definitley has a shot. But his shot is in the early rounds. Between 3-5. He’s gotta do some work and damage, hurt or KO PAC early otherwise he’ll be pissing up stream as the fight wears on. As Cotto who is known to fade begins the middle rounds….PAC will be getting stronger and faster. The size will be a factor early, but if PAC can keep the early rounds under control with his speed, movement and footwork…..He’ll be able to weather the early strom from Cotto and the difference in CLASS will begin to show. PAC will completely control the fight by mid rounds and Cotto will begin to eat a lot of punches. Cotto won’t give up…but he’ll definitly look the beaten fighter and eventually I see Cotto’s camp saving him from any further punishment at the hands of Manny. But Cotto has got to make his “feeling out process” a very short one. As the time ticks on the 3 min clock he is loosing his window of opportunity in this fight.

The whole weight issue or “NON ISSUE” for Cotto has been blown way out of proportion. What was Cotto’s weight for the Clottley fight? 146! How long ago was the Josh fight? 4-6 months ago? Cotto went almost immeditately in to camp after his fight with Josh knowing good and well he was going to be facing PAC in his BIGGEST career fight. Lossing a measly pound without the trend of blowing up inbetween fights like he normally does will be a lot easier making 145 than most think. Cotto isn’t struggling to make weight, he’s going to be 100% for this fight and PAC has got to be prepared for the best Cotto…whcih I believe he is. If PAC isn’t…..Cotto has this fight in the bag. I see PAC by KO/TKO 9-10
This is why i love to see Pacman fights, you’ll never know if he will win or not. The guy is always stepping up. I’ll take Pacman winning by KO in the ninth round.
People think that Cotto will have trouble with somebody as fast as Pacquiao. However Cotto has faced fast boxers. Cotto is not fast … but I do not remember Pacquiao ever facing somebody as fast as even Cotto. Barrera, Marquez, Morales and Hatton had average speed; while De la Hoya was slow and spent at that time. I think that Pacquiao will have more problems adjusting to Cotto than viceversa.

It was interesting to see you show both sides of the arguement and to read peoples replies about how wrong you are, how biased you are, etc., while the repliers didn’t even read both articles.

I think this fight will be a hard fought fight. Pac will start strong and fast but as soon as Cotto begings to land some effective body shots and don’t disreguard a low blow here and there they will start taking their toll on Pacquiao. Pacquiao wil be pressed hard and offten by the middle rounds it will be ovious that Cotto is the stronger opponent that Manny has faced and although he will stagger Cotto early in the fight it won’t be enough to stop him. I predict a Cotto win going the distance and for the first time Pacquiao looking like a beat fighter at the end of the fight possibly even cut deffinetly swelled up just like when he fought Morales the first time around. Almost everyone is counting Cotto out for this fight at the end if Pacquiao engages he may be the one getting count out of this match. Either way good luck to both fighters as they both are magnific athletes.
Pedro is a gambling man, much like a poker player.
He has lost a lot of chips on Pacman and being the gambler that he apparently is, he is betting this time that he will be dealt with an ace card, taking it to chance. All his reasonings are obvious facts, resonating around the internet over and over again, nothing new. But it appears that Pedro hasn’t seen a dice player on a fantastic roll and keeps on betting against him hoping that this time he’s correct. But by the time Pedro is correct, he would have lost so much that in retrospect will ask himself, was it all worth it?
Its true Cotto has beaten fast fighters in Shane Mosley and Zab Judah before but what people also forget is what Cotto had to sustain in those fights he won. Both Judah and Mosley connected over 50% of their power punches on Cotto, with Judah landing as high as 57% of his power shots according to compubox. The flipside is, Cotto aside from his wicked left hook, Cotto has a destructive jab in his arsenal and if he can throw off manny’s rythm using the jab, he has a good shot at stopping the filipino dynamo. Dang I can’t wait to see this fight!

I love you man! Unfortunately I have to disagree 100% with your assessment. Manny beats up Cotto and stops him by the 8th or 10th rounds. MC has turned into the current version of Vinnie Pazienza. MC will start dripping blood with the first dirty look Manny throws his way. Manny is in his prime and MC is clearly not. MC has the tools to beat Manny but I doubt very much that MC’s trainer, Santiago whom clearly lack experience has developed a solid game plan. MP is not Clottey who came very close to beating Miguel. The lack of having a solid corner and having tender skin will prove to be a huge advantage for team Pacman.

I think the fight will be stopped before the 5th round by a cut from an unintentional headbutt and we will all have wasted our money purchasing the PPV fight. I can’t remember for sure, but if the fight is stopped this way before the 5th then it is scored a No Contest?
Neither fighter will have dominated the other by this time so there will be no way to predict who may have won.
We will again blow $50 to see the rematch.
people keep talking about how good of a body puncher Cotto is and how he will break Pac down with body shots to win. I don’t think that’s the way to beat a quick fighter like Pacman. If thats his game plan he’ll get beat early. He will leave too many openings. The way you offset speed is with a jab, and Cotto has a very good one. Also if he can switch to Southpaw every now and then he may be able to confuse Pacman and slow his aggression. Pac can be outboxed, but If Cotto thinks he can win by turning this into a slugfest that’s his downfall. He might be able to win with his brains, but the only Physical advantage he has here is size, and in this case draining himmself to 145 diminishes that slight advantage.
The big difference is that Mosley had speed and a 7 inch reach advantage over Cotto. Pacquiao will be smaller and may even be at a reach disadvantage with Cotto.
As long as Cotto can adjust to Paquaio’s speed then Cotto’s winning.
Cotto needs to bulldoze Paquaio. Back his ass up and make him fight going backwards. I think if Cotto plays the countering game, he won’t be quick enough to win and will most likely be outboxed. Cotto should use his size and be all over Paquaio from round 1.
its cotto’s fight to lose. he has all the tools to beat pacquiao. cotto has the jab to disrupt pacquiao’s rhythm. cotto has the body attack to slow pacquiao down. cotto has the right hand to keep him honest. and the x-factor that cotto has over pacquiao is that cotto shoots the left hand hard from the southpaw stance. when was the last time pacquiao has been hit by a lead left from a southpaw? cotto wore down judah with that punch late and he’ll find it a great asset in this fight. pacquiao isn’t nearly as powerful as margarito, clottey and mosely. to say that pacquiao is gonna run over cotto is nonsence. it took margarito eleven rounds to wear out cotto and he had to go through hell to do it. i don’t think manny has the chin to withstand cotto for 12 rounds. and those three names should be all the evidence needed. you put up those three names to the best pacquiao has faced and you’ll notice one glaring difference. those men were way bigger fighters. cotto is not washed up like oscar and ricky. whatever pacquiao saw in cotto during the clottey fight doesn’t mean anything. clottey comes to the ring as a super middleweight for godsakes. you think manny would have went 12 rounds with clottey, nine with a big gash over your right eye? please! manny paniced when he got cut in the first morales fight and wasn’t the same after the cut in the marquez rematch. cotto is gonna get his well deserved shining moment come saturday night.

Pedro, if you seen the Clottey-Cotto fight, to me Cotto looks robotic, he telegraph his punches, he is not focuse. A lot people including myself think Margarito took a lot from him. I don’t see Cotto having any strenght over Pacquiao. They said that about DLH, Hatton, Diaz all three are down for the count, with no interest in boxing anymore. Marquez could’ve, should’ve, would’ve beat Pacquiao, but the judges seen a different fight. At this time Marquez is the only one that gave Pacquiao the fight of his life. One thing Pacquiao has improve so much in boxing, is increible. On Saturday night Pacquiao will once again show the world he is not a fluke, but the best fighter in the world.

One scenario I see for a Cotto win:
Pacquiao trying the same type of in and out footwork game as with DLH but Cotto’s jab consistantly interrupting his attack and spoiling his timing. Pacquiao gets a bit frustrated and tries to force the straight left without an effective jab to set it up and gets caught coming in with a big straight right for knockdown one of the fight. A shaky Pacquiao shows his heart, getting up and trying to retaliate on the now stalking Cotto, but his naturally over agressive instincts leave him open to flush shots. Referee stops the fight with a helpless Pacquiao on the ropes after a strong body/head combo from Cotto. Round 6 TKO Cotto retains the WBO belt.

Hello Mr. Fernandez, no offense intended, but you’re sounding like the Pac/ODLH fight. Isn’t it the same? that it was a mismatch, a circus, and so on, but look what happened? Couldn’t we just leave it on Nov. 14th. Let them decide, and not whackings, are you sure of that?
COTTO HAS FOUGHT GOING BACKWARD IN HIS LAST 4 FIGHTS (EXCEPT FOR THE JENNINGS FIGHT), PEDRO.
What everyone is not figuring in is Manny’s unique ability to throw lightning fast punches from unusual angles. That is what DLH’s impression was in his comments about that fight. It is the punches you don’t see coming that hurt the most. Additionally, maybe it is just me, but everytime I see Cotto on video lately, he looks a little drained whereas Manny always looks full of energy.
Here is another point. Cotto can be hit. That means Cotto will be hit. Manny’s power is amplified by his speed and unusual punching angles. I see a decision though since it took Margarito almost the whole 12 rounds to stop him using plaster of paris in his gloves.
Also, what is so much fun to watch about Manny is that he keeps getting better with each fight. The Manny you saw against Diaz was better than he was against Marquez. Better yet agains DLH and even better against Hatton. The Manny you will see against Cotto will be even better than that. That will be fun to watch. So much better than a boring Mayweather fight.

Both of these champions are class acts and Boxing is lucky to have them. And I agree that the weight and size difference will be too much for Manny. I see Cotto after 8. I hope I’m wrong.
This is a fight that will definately live to its expectations. The fact that Miguel Cotto is the stornger guy here make alot of fans believe that he will prevail. That is a great prediction. For me I see the outcome different, I think Pacquiao will be the one to end the fight in a fashionable way (KO) Im sayin in the 7th or 8th round. But dont be surprised if Pacquiao is the one that hits the mat first. The undercard is stacked and it sure be a great night of boxing for us fans.

you cannot neutralize what you can’t catch and those boxers above all are not in the same league as pacman. the footwork of pacman is simply too fast for cotto let alone had speed. pacman can hit just as hard as cotto and will stop him. as a follower of both cotto and pacman, cotto has declined since his loss to margarito. manny has gotten even better.
paulie malignaggi who was smaller than cotto couldn’t be knocked out and put one hell of a 12 round fight. paulie malignaggi also lost badly to hatton and hatton was slaughtered by pacman. so to say cottos power is gonna ko pacman isn’t that easy to say.
there is no boxer in greater shape than pacman. pacman is going for 7 titles in 7 ifferent weight classes and is destined to be one of the greatest boxers ever lived.
if pacman wins, people are going to say that the weight was too low for cotto. haters of pacman will always find an excuse.
1 more, x factor. there is no recent great fighter with a nobody trainer. cotto has a nutrionist trainer while manny has a world reknown trainer. if you take 2 fighters with almost even boxing skills, the man with the better trainer will always win. look what happened to tyson when his trainer died? do the history search on trainers. if it was that easy, anyone could be a trainer.
it’s really sad that cotto didn’t upgrade after he lost his uncle trainer.

Your comment last Nov 13 (7:44 pm) is very impressive. I am really surprised that you were able to “confidently” predict RIGHT that Pacman can hit just as hard as COTTO.
It leaves me wondering how Pacman can punch if not HARDER, as hard as COTTO because he is NOT a natural welterweight. In fact, Pedro Fernandez explicitly pointed out he used to be JUST a light-flyweight boxer (106 – 108lbs) when he launched his pro career.

thanks for the positive comments. how does pacman hit harder or as hard as cotto? pacman is like bruce lee. not to be cynical but pacman hits with power because he has excellent speed and technique. his body mechanics in his punch are all in 1 punch. the other thing is that fighters are completely blind sided at the angles he’s coming in. there’s not time to brace what you don’t know is coming which leaves manny’s opponents completely vulnerable.
did you see chavez jr? manny could knock that middle weight in 1 rd. he’s so slow. jr could hit a small pacman and he’d still be coming.
do the search on shawn porter. he’s a middle weight (165) that has a killer left much stronger than cotto. he couldn’t bring down pacman. they used to train for cotto. roach is genius.
