COMBAT SPORTS NOT NEW TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

MANY ALL-TIME GREATS ABUSED PARTNERS

The Late Edwin And Carolina Valero

Murderer Edwin Valero, wife Carolina & Children

Los Angeles, CA- Combat sports are violent in nature.  Two people compete to determine who is better at hurting the other while avoiding being hurt themselves.  This combat should be left in the ring, Octagon, cage, etc., but it often enters the household.  Evander Holyfield (44-10-2-1, 29 KOs), Mike Tyson (50-6-0-2, 44 KOs) and Sugar Ray Leonard (36-3-1, 25 KOs) are just a few legends who have had violent conflicts with women.  While they are adored by the public for their exploits in the ring, their exploits outside the ring should not be forgotten.

MOTORCYCLE WRECK DIDN’T HELP

Knockout artist Edwin Valero was well on his way to becoming one of boxing’s next stars before he murdered his wife Carolina.  Considered “Brain Damaged” and banned in most places from boxing after a motorcycle accident, Valero had problems with alcohol. His late wife went to the hospital twice after “falling down the stairs.”

BAN AGAINST VALERO BOXING LIFTED IN TEXAS

After he admitted murdering his wife April 18, 2010, 28-year old Edwin Valero was found dead hanging in his jail cell the next day.  Despite an impressive ring record of 27-0, all 27 KOs and titles in two divisions, Valero was a mess when the gloves came off.

CARLOS MONZON MURDERED EX-WIFE

World middleweight champion Carlos Monzón (87-3-9, 58 KOs) of Argentian is one of the greatest fighters in history, but Carlos had a very dark side outside of the ring.  Seven years prior to his death in a 1995 car crash, Monzón was found guilty of killing his wife Alicia Muñiz. Sentenced to 11 years in prison, Carlos died after a drunken car accident during a weekend furlough with another dame.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER HAS “LUMPED UP” CHICKS

Boxing’s ‘pound-for-pound’ and pay-per-view king Floyd “Money” Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) has been convicted of domestic abuse on multiple occasions, and famously served a very brief jail sentence as a result.  Floyd is the current face of boxing, and his violence against women gives the sport a bad reputation in the eyes of many casual observers.  He is just the latest in a long line of offenders.  Sugar Ray Robinson (175-19-6, 109 KOs), a man widely considered to be the greatest boxer of all time, also beat his wife in front of their children.

MMA NOT IMMUNE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver (14-5) was jailed in 2014 for abusing his girlfriend Christy Mack.  Travis Browne (17-3), Jason “Mayhem” Miller (23-9, 1 NC), and Thiago Silva (16-4, 2 NC) are other fighters who have histories of hurting women.  With the recent HBO report coming out that domestic violence in mixed martial arts is double that of the civilian population, there is certainly cause for concern in the sport.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

If you are a man who assaults women, you should not only be ashamed, you should be jailed, especially if you are a trained fighter. And hey, this is not a problem limited to combat sports, as there are several offenders in other sports as well, but it is one that is the most unacceptable as participants are trained to do as much damage as possible to another individual.

MANDATORY PRISON TIME IF FIGHTERS HIT WOMEN?

More severe penalties must be put in place to fight abuse in combat sports. If you commit Felonious Assault via a partner, spouse, etc., you should get state prison time. Whether common sense and responsibility triumph over the money that stands to be made as some promoters sweep D.V. under the rug, that is another charter in this ongoing story.
