HOLLY HOLM PUTS RONDA ROUSEY TO SLEEP!

LIKE FRIDAY MOVIE, RONDA GOT “KNOCKED THE **** OUT!

Night, Night Ronda!

Night, Night Ronda!

Los Angeles,CARonda Rousey (12-1) was supposed to be an unstoppable wrecking machine. How ironic it is for her to be knocked out in just over a round by former boxer Holly Holm (33-2-3, 9 KOs as a boxer) at UFC 193. Having dabbled in amateur kickboxing in her youth, Holly’s first love was boxing. Holm had won boxing titles at super lightweight (140lb.), welterweight (147), and super welterweight (154) going into Saturday night, and she now adds a UFC bantamweight (135) belt to her collection.

20-1 UNDERDOG SCHOOLS ROUSEY

From the opening bell, it was clear that Holm was in control. She battered Rousey’s face with straight lefts and right hooks from her southpaw boxing stance, and even managed to take the Olympic judoka down. By the time the second round began, a bloodied Rousey was visibly exhausted. After stuffing another takedown attempt from Rousey, Holm landed a head-kick of doom that concussed the ex-champ. The followup punches were merely a formality. The reign of Rousey was obliterated 59 seconds into round 2 in Australia.

END OF THE HYPE?

The UFC built Rousey into a cash-cow, and her drawing power will likely decrease significantly now. She already seemed to have a foot out the door going into the fight, and rumors of a poor training camp have only stoked that fire. This is a crushing, debilitating loss that will be very difficult to overcome. It was a bit ridiculous for anyone with 12 fights (in a weak division) to be considered on the level of a Tyson to begin with, but that hype has now come to an abrupt halt.

New UFC Champ Holly Holm

New UFC Champ Holly Holm

San Francisco, CA– A few months ago, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson compared Ronda Rousey to himself when he said, “she’s a natural born killer.” When it came down to the meltdown of the then undefeated Mike Tyson, there was Buster Douglas. In this case, Holly Holm will forever be Ronda’s Buster Douglas after “HH” secured a TKO :59 seconds into round two.

BOXING LESSONS PAY OFF FOR MMA FIGHTERS

As has been the case of late in the world of MMA, those with a balanced arsenal of mixed martial arts, this means a ground game and stand up abilities, those able to excel vertically (boxing) are excelling. Case in point Chris Weidman knocking out legendary Anderson Silva. Another example, bantamweight king TJ Dillashaw dismantling long time champion Renan Barao.

ROUSEY PERFORMED LIKE “FACE FIGHTER”

Although she has been training intensely in the boxing ring, Ronda, like the aforementioned Tyson was completely frustrated as “Double H” beat “Double R” to the punch from the very start of round one. In a nutshell, it was boxing domination per se and yet it was only Boxing 101. The taller Holm, used her height and reach advantage, fighting out of the southpaw stance, flat out kicked the snot out of the “rushing in” Rousey.

HOLM FAVORED IN ANY REMATCH

In all, the Holm-Rousey fight lasted just 5:59 seconds, not the norm when it comes to one of Rhonda’s fights as only two opponents get out of the first round. The end came as Rousey was battered and bleeding when Holly landed a flush left kick, dropping Ronda in a heap. “HH” jumped on the prone now ex-champion and referee Herb Dean stopped the fight.

TYSON WAS “NEVER THE SAME” AFTER BUSTER

A rematch will happen in 2016 probably in Las Vegas, although Albuquerque, NM would be ideal seeing it’s Holm’s hometown. As for the rematch, what could Rhonda do differently? Like the Tyson-Evander Holyfield fights clearly illustrate, when “somebody” has your number, it’s hard to prevail. Holly Holm dominated Rousey from beginning to end. And although this is MMA, Rhonda got turned out!

THREE UNDEFEATED FIGHTERS IN UFC MAIN & CO-MAIN

Mike Tyson & Ronda Rousey

Mike Tyson & Ronda Rousey

Los Angeles, CA– Three UFC fighters will walk into the octagon with perfect pro records on Saturday night. At most, only two of them will retain their unblemished records as UFC 193 features two females champs defending their belts.

ROUSEY SPORT’S BIGGEST STAR

Since the decline of Anderson Silva, the retirement of Brock Lesnar, and the indefinite hiatus of Georges St. Pierre, the need for a new star has been felt throughout mixed martial arts circles. Ronda Rousey (12-0) fills that need. She will put her record on the line versus Holly Holm (9-0), a former boxing champion. Holm does not appear to have the tenacity needed to take on Rousey, and I think she will eventually succumb to the bantamweight (135 lb.) champion’s brute force.

JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK IN CO-MAIN

One of the pound-for-pound most eciting fighters to watch, strawweight (115) champ Joanna “Champion” Jedrzejczyk (10-0) will remain unbeaten against Valerie Letourneau (8-3). Champion is a viciously accurate striker and will likely take out her foe within the scheduled distance.

REMATCH OF A CLASSIC ON UNDERCARD

Regionally based (New Zealand) heavyweght (265) Mark Hunt (10-10-1) will face Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (19-7-1) yet again. Hunt seemed to edge the first fight, but walked away with a draw in 2013. I think he wins the rematch, though both men have declined since then. Should be another bloody battle while it lasts.

WHAT THE HELL IS TRT?
Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 7.03.34 PM
Los Angeles, CA– Middleweight (185 lbs) steroid user Vitor Belfort (24-11) will likely beat a very washed up Dan Henderson (31-13) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 77 from the Geraldo Jose De Almeida State Gymnasium in Sau Paolo, Brazil. Both guys have extensive experience with performance-enhancing drugs, both illicit and prescribed, so this is essentially a battle for Testosterone Replacement Therapy supremacy sans the once legal TRT..

VITOR TEST RESULTS SWEPT UNDER RUG BY UFC?

According to an article on Yahoo Sports, Belfort has tested positive a few times, which UFC Prez Dana White and company allegedly had knowledge of, but Zuffa Sports, the UFC parent company, is alleged to have ignored these results and allowed him to fight on. If these allegations are true, there may be some serious repercussions for the mixed martial arts giant.

LIGHT HEAVIES (205 LB.) IN CO-MAIN TANGLE

Another Brazilian veteran Glover Texeira (23-4) will mix it up with Patrick Cummins (8-2) in the chief support of the evening. Cummins has proven to be a pretty decent fighter, but Glover has the edge here.

UNDEFEATED BANTAM (135) STAR ON UNDERCARD

Red hot Thomas Almeida (19-0) will look to keep his perfect record in tact against Anthony Birchak (12-2). Is Almeida the goods? This fight should prove or disprove that notion. Lean towards the unbeaten man to stay that way.

Bare MMA Landscape This Week

Bare MMA Landscape This Week

Los Angeles, CA– Another event, another major cancellation. This seems to be the UFC motto these days as yet another intriguing matchup has been lost due to a training camp injury. Red hot lightweight (155 lbs.) prospect and Conor McGregor (18-2) conqueror Joseph Duffy (14-1) reportedly suffered a concussion on his last day of sparring (Saturday) for what was scheduled to be the headliner of UFC Fight Night 76 vs Dustin Poirier in Duffy’s homeland of Ireland. The two will likely meet in the future.

MAIN EVENT SCRAPPED ENTIRELY

Rather than find a replacement opponent for Poirier (18-4), the UFC has changed the main event to a flyweight (125 lbs.) bout between Patrick Holohan (12-1-1) and Louis Smolka (9-1). We all know how well these flyweight main events have been received historically….looks like fans might wanna’ skip this one.

LUCKILY, BELLATOR HAS YOUR MMA FIX

Tonight, Bellator 144 strikes on Spike TV. Main event features middleweights (185) Brandon Halsey (9-0) and Rafael Carvalho (11-1) clashing for the Bellator title. This looks like a solid scrap on paper and a good main bout. The rest of the card is not so watchable, but the main event is appears to be a great clash.

WEAK WEEK FOR MMA

With only one real marketable match between two events, it is a light week for mixed martial arts…to put it ‘lightly’… UFC 193 with Ronda Rousey-Holly Holm is the next big fight on the Zuffa Sports (UFC parent company) roster, and even that looks like a squash match. Guess we’ll just hold our collective breath for Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor in December.

DC NIPS GUS IN FIERY UFC 192 MAIN EVENT

205 LB. TITLE BOUT MAYBE “FIGHT OF THE YEAR”

Gus Eats DC Right

Gus Eats DC Right

Los Angeles, CA– It was a brutal fight from start to finish.  In the end, UFC champion Daniel Cormier (17-1) walked away with a narrow Split Decision 5 win after a fight that could have gone either way as Alexander Gustafsson (16-4) had a strong showing where he landed several solid kicks to the body, punches to the face, and a knee to the head that dropped the champ.  Gus even managed to take Cormier down, but he too was taken down once.

CHAMP WORKED WELL IN CLOSE

Cormier landed several uppercuts from the clinch throughout the fight, and held Gustafsson down on the mat for a large chunk of round one. It was the kind of fight where neither guy proved to be better than the other and a rematch seems highly likely in the near future. Score s were 48-47 DC, 48-47 Gus, and 49-46 DC.  With the win, Cormier will continue to keep the real* light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ (21-1) strap warm till mid 2016.

CORMIER & SWEDE MAKE FOR INTERESTING FIGHT

Cormier-Gustafsson Headlines UFC 192

Cormier-Gustafsson Headlines UFC 192

Los Angeles, CA- Alexander Gustafsson (16-3) will get his second crack at UFC gold when he faces light heavyweight (205 lb.) champion Daniel Cormier (16-1) in the main event of UFC 192.  Gustafsson has been out of action since January and an embarrassing TKO 1 (2:15) loss to Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (20-5) in front of Gus’ home crowd back in Sweden.

PICKING THE SWEDE TO TAKE TITLE

Styles make fights, however, and the solid takedown defense of Gustafsson, which kept him upright for much of his fight versus Jon Jones (21-1) will work for him here.  Cormier has solid striking, but it is not as diverse as Jones.  Gustafsson has the best boxing and arguably the best overall striking in the division.  Can’t count D.C. out as the former Strikforce Grand Prix heavyweight champion throttled “Rumble” back in May at UFC 187 en route to a third round submission victory.

NICE WELTERWEIGHT TILT IN CO-MAIN

Former UFC welter (170) champ Johny Hendricks (17-3) squares off with the talented Tyron Woodley (15-3) in the co-main event of the evening. I favor Hendricks by a nose.  Woodley will be a tough fight and the winner will likely be next in line for a title shot.

ANOTHER FORMER CHAMP RETURNS

Former UFC light heavyweight (205 lb.) titleholder Rashad Evans (19-3-1) returns to combat for the first time since November 2013.  Across the cage from him will be perennial contender Ryan Bader (19-4) who just cannot seem to get to next level.  Probably because he is generally excruciating to watch.  Evans should be favored, but his rust from inactivity could be a major factor.  “Gatekeeper” Bader last fought in January.

WRAPUP OF LAST WEEK’S UFC FIGHT NIGHT 75

Heavyweight (265) Josh Barnett (34-7) won a unanimous decision over Roy “Big Country” Nelson (20-12) “Big Country” Nelson has now lost five of his last six, and being one of Dana White’s least favorite guys means he is likely on his way out of the UFC.  In a surprise upset, Uriah Hall (12-5) knocked out Gegard Mousasi (36-6-2) 25 seconds into round two.  Hall landed qhat appeared to be an intended body kick right on Mousasi’s button when the former Strikeforce champ ducked into it.  Flukey or not, Hall is on his way to a title shot in the near future.

UFC 192 SATURDAY & FIGHT NIGHT 75 NOTES

FEDOR EMELIANENKO RETURN TOPS MMA NOTES

JAPAN WILL HOST RETURN OF “LAST EMPEROR”

Fedor Emelianenko

Fedor Emelianenko

Los Angeles, CA-If you watched the freak show that was Bellator 142, you saw Pride Fighting Championships founder Nobuyuki Sakakibara bring out the legendary heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (34-4, 1 NC) to announce his return to mixed martial arts competition.  Fedor will fight on New Year’s Eve in Japan for a new organization that is essentially the rebirth of the beloved Pride banner.

QUESTIONS YET TO BE ANSWERED

Who will Fedor fight?  Will it be in a ring or a cage? Will there be a ten-minute opening round?  There are several questions that will be answered in the next few months.  Fedor’s return will no doubt generate a lot of buzz and bring Bellator, who will be part of this event, into the world spotlight in a new way.

WHY BELLATOR & NOT UFC?

Many fans have been left to wonder in the wake of Fedor’s return why he elected not to fight in the UFC.  The answer is more complex than it appears.  Fedor likely refused to UFC’s offer based on financial information, which makes a lot of sense.  Dana White, long an opponent of Fedor’s, no doubt low-balled the legend to stroke his own ego.  Fedor compiled a resume that has made him the greatest heavyweight (265) martial artist of all time without the help of the UFC.  He still may fight under the Zuffa banner, as this deal in Japan is only supposed to last for one or two fights.

“MIGHTY MOUSE” NOT SO WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERTAINMENT

Demetrious "Mighty Bore" Johnson

Demetrious “Mighty Bore” Johnson

Demetrious Johnson (23-2-1) is one of the best fighters in the world, but the UFC flyweight (125) champ causes fans to need “Viagra” as Pedro would say.  People just cannot get up for his fights.  Yes, he is the undisputed champion.  Yes, he just beat his biggest rival John Dodson (17-7) for the second time.  This has been met with a resounding “so what?”.  The guys can move, he’s fast, he is great technically, but his fights generally do not have the drama fans want to see.  They usually involve DJ picking apart some hapless opponent for 5 rounds and winning on the cards.  Fans booed this latest performance, and that says a lot about what type of entertainment value Johnson has.  Best bet is to move up to bantamweight (135) for a unification bout with kingpin TJ Dillashaw (12-2).

FORMER KING MIR LOST A TOUGH ONE

The good news for Frank Mir (18-10) is he did not go out there and get embarrassed on Saturday night.  The bad news is he lost a unanimous nod over three to Andrei Arlovski (25-10, 1 NC), who will probably get the next title shot after Fabricio Werdum (20-5-1) whoops Cain Velasquez (13-2) again in early 2016.  That is, of course, if Velasquez stays healthy, at which he has proven to be rather piss-poor.  This could have been Frank Mir’s shot to reclaim the heavyweight (265) title he lost back in 2009.  Instead, this will be a major setback for the 36-year-old vet.

NICK DIAZ MARIJUANA SUSPENSION A DISGRACE

NEVADA COMMISSION SO SADLY “OUT OF TOUCH” THEY ARE

Nick Diaz Training

Nick Diaz Training

Los Angeles, CA- The Nevada State Athletic Commission is not an ally of Stockton, CA’s Nick Diaz (26-9, 2 NC). DISGRACEFUL Following his UFC 183 positive test results for what has been determined time and again to be recommended “Medical Marijuana,” after the group suspended Diaz for five years and fining him $165,000.  This was Diaz’ third offense, having previously seen his career-highlight win over Takanori Gomi (35-11, 1 NC) change to a no contest and serving suspensions in 2007 and 2012.  Yes, Diaz broke the rules, but why does such a rule exist in the first place?

“KING OF MMA” RONDA ROUSEY WEIGHS IN

“I’m sorry no one asked me anything, but I have to say something. It’s so not right for him to be suspended five years for marijuana.  I’m against them even testing for weed at all. It’s not a performance-enhancing drug, it has nothing to do with athletic competition, it’s only tested for political reasons. They say ‘Oh, it’s only for your safety to keep you from hurting yourself because you’re out there.’ Well then, why don’t they test for all the other things that could possibly hurt us that we could be under the influence of while we’re out there?,” said Rousey.   Read more

UFC CZAR DANA WHITE ALLOWS NO USURPERS

DANA’S “FUN-DRIVEN PRESIDENT” IMAGE HAS WORN THIN

Czar White

Czar White

Los Angeles, CADana White has done great things for the business side of the UFC.  He and the Fertitta’s bros. (Lorenzo & Frank) took a company that was $30 million in debt and turned it into a billion dollar entity.  He was hailed as a visionary and his first little outbursts in which he would curse at anyone within range were refreshing diversions for most fans.  Now, it seems his ego has outgrown his popularity.

DANA WHITE LOVES DANA WHITE

If you pay attention to the UFC head, you will notice his appreciation for all things “Dana.”  To be fair, he deserves credit as a shrewd businessman.  That being said “shrewd” is only a consonant away from sounding a whole lot like “rude.”  Thankfully, fans do not have to endure his grotesque displays of wealth, as he has not hosted his own video blog for a couple years now.  Something just seems wrong about the president of a company showing off his material possessions while fighters who sacrifice their bodies for his benefit are paid being peanuts.

UFC BEHAVIOR SIMILAR TO FASCISM

One man controls the vast majority of MMA talent in the world.  This same man reportedly pays fighters about 12% of the total profit made by the UFC.  You read that correctly, folks.  Fighters, who are responsible for 100% of the viewership of the UFC, are only given 12-15% of revenue.  Some of Dana’s “boys” get a bigger cut, like Conor McGregor (18-2), but the majority are no longer happy campers.

UFC PREZ IN HOT WATER?

Dana "Moneybags" White

Dana “Moneybags” White

Los Angeles, CA- According to UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, Dana White has been forced to use an iPhone so he can be tracked by an unknown authority. Rogan claims this investigation is related to the recent lawsuit levied on the UFC by its former employees, including Cung Le (9-3), Jon Fitch (26-7-1, 1 NC), Nate Quarry (12-4), and the Bay’s own Kyle Kingsbury (11-6, 1 NC). While the exact parameters of the investigation remain unclear, it is apparent that Mr. White is being probed on some serious matters.

WHITE FAMOUS FOR “BURNER” FLIP PHONE

Before being forced to upgrade to an iPhone, White used a flip phone with basic functions. In 2015, seemingly the only people who use those types of devices are drug dealers. So tell me why the the head of a billion dollar company was using a “burner” to conduct business? Drug dealers generally use these phones because they have no GPS and are harder for authorities to trace. The fact that White would choose to use a phone like this may surprise some, but given his character it seems like a logical occurrence.

DOES WHITE HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE?

Speculation will no doubt swirl around the UFC president, but could he actually have some dark secrets? Only time will tell, but you can bet Mr. White will be less outspoken in the mear future than usual. He has yet to release a formal statement on this matter, and word has it the Fertitta bros., Frank and Lorenzo, UFC primary owners, have him on a short leash.  I do believe in reserving judgment until all of the facts trickle out, but I must admit my eyebrows are certainly raised.

JOE ROGAN’S EXACT WORDS ON DANA WHITE’S PROBLEMS

“He has an iPhone now. They make him use the iPhone because he’s under some investigation so they have to be able to track all of his shit because they’re getting sued. There’s a bunch of shit going on.”

World Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux

World Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux

San Francisco, CA– I spotted a YouTube.com clip of Guillermo Rigondeaux, the Cuban boxing legend who defected to box in America. Apparently, the former Olympic champion is being trained by Freddie Roach, and between the two they utilize a lot of interesting training methods.

BRUCE LEE FOUGHT IN OAKLAND STREETS

One training method that Rigondeaux uses is hitting a boxing glove hanging as a target. This training method is what living legend Leo Fong saw Bruce Lee doing the morning after the street fight that he had with Wong Jack Man in Oakland, that was a life changing event for him.

Ronda Rousey-Floyd Mayweather

Ronda Rousey-Floyd Mayweather

Los Angeles, CAFloyd Mayweather, challenged by Ronda Rousey to a “male vs. female” full contact fight, shot back and said he makes more money than Ronda. She fired back with, “I don’t know if you saw the Floyd thing; he said ‘You make $300 million a night, then you can give me a call.’ I actually did the math and given the numbers of my last fight, I’m actually the highest paid UFC fighter and I’m a woman. And I think I actually make two to three times more than he does per second. So when he learns to read and write, he can text me.”.

UFC MAIN EVENT HAS FLUKE ENDING

It was billed as an exciting matchup between two of the best young featherweights (145 lb.) in the world.  While the action certainly was not bad, the fight ended abruptly at 1:39 of the very first round.  Max Holloway (14-3) looked to be taking an early advantage over Charles Oliveira (20-5) with his striking before Oliveira crumpled suddenly and was unable to continue.  The officially result is listed as “TKO (Esophagus Injury)”, which was a first for me.  We did not learn too much about either guy that we did not already know.  Holloway is on the rise and Oliveira wilts under pressure.

MAGNY AND COTE WIN ON UNDERCARD

Welterweight (170) Neil Magny (16-4) scored a minor upset over Erick Silva (18-6, 1 NC) in the chief support.  Silva has been touted throughout his UFC career, but has so far failed to separate himself from his peers.  His UFC record stands at 6-5, though to be fair, it should be 7-4.  He was given a dubious disqualification versus Carlo Prater (31-15-1) in what should have been a TKO win.  Still, Silva will look to rebuild yet again after losing to Magny by split decision.  On the undercard, Patrick Cote (22-9) knocked out Josh Burkman (27-12, 1 NC) at 1:26 of round 3 in front of Cote’s home crowd at the Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
