RON LYLE HAD MUHAMMAD ALI BEAT?

QUESTION SHRINK COULD ANSWER & VIDEO AT END

Ron Lyle

Ron Lyle

Emeryville, CA– If you ever awaken from Anestesia induced slumber, have a pen and paper handy or a cell voice voice recorder. Because if you’re anything like myself, you’ll wake up with a myriad of thoughts and memories, some of which I was able to scribble on the bootom of a tissue box.

“THAT’S CASSIUS CLAY” SAID MY FATHER

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali

The effects were reliving a few of my own fights, waking up like they had just occurred. There was the first time I saw Muhammad Ali, then Cassius Clay in San Francisco’s Herman-Newman’s Gym circa five years of age.

DAD SAID “FOREMAN COULD KILL A MAN”

There was then bully George Foreman, only just 17 and his domination of professional heavyweights in mid 1967, a good year and a half before winning the 1968 Olympic Gold Medal. The admission charge, sometimes in effect was 50 cents.

REMEMBERING ZENITH OF RON LYLE

As is the case with both dreams and going to the amusement park, all you can do is go along for the ride. That being the case, Ron Lyle came to mind. Dont know why as I hadn’t seen the Denver, CO native in a decade or so. But it wasn’t my times with Ron while he was training fighters in Johnny Tocco’s Main Street Gym, this segment of the flashback brought me back to May 1975 and Ron’s challenge of then heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. BOB FOSTER THE BEST AT 175 LBS. “UNPLUGGED”

BOB FOSTER THE GREATEST LIGHT HEAVY PERIOD!
Bob-Foster
Canastota, NY– When it comes to rating the greats who have fought at light heavyweight, you cannot omit the name of former World champion Bob Foster. There are boxing fans and historians alike who say Bob Foster was the best 175-pounder of all time.

EPIC KNOCKOUTS OF TIGER & QUARRY

The highlight of the Foster reign, in my view, was his chilling one-punch knockout of Mike Quarry in 1972. There was an almost deadly hush as the prone Quarry lay lifeless for more than five minutes. Others say the zenith of the “Albuquerque Thin Man’s” career was the left hook that defanged Dick Tiger in May 1968 and capturing the world light heavyweight championship in the process.

COULD NOT BEAT THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT ERA

As a heavyweight, Foster proved too frail and failed to match the strength to match the behemoths like Ali, Frazier, etc., losing six times to bigger foes. Overall, Foster posted a log of 56-8, with 46 KOs including 14 title defenses with 11 challengers failing to go the 15-round distance. Standing close to 6’4 and wearing his age well, Foster still had the aura of a man brimming with self-confidence when I conducted this interview.

EDDIE MAFUZ HONORED ON WALL OF FAME

BOXING LOST BORICUA GODFATHER IN EDDIE MAFUZ

Eddie Mafuz & Isaac Logart

Eddie Mafuz & Isaac Logart

New York, NY– Of all the obituaries I’ve written, (and as we get older it gets more often) having to tell the boxing world about the death of Eddie Mafuz in November 2005 was a very hard thing to do. Today we add Eddie to the Ring Talk “Wall Of Fame.”

EDDIE PART OF BOXING’S 98 %

Having known him for about 20 years, I would occasionally venture to New York City and from time to time I’d see Eddie and his late wife. The 80’ish Mafuz had been in boxing since the 1940s and could run off the records of some of the greats, and even the not so greats he was around.

MANAGER, CORNERMAN, IN THE GYM, EDDIE DID IT ALL!

Some people will say, Eddie who? But for those of us that have been around the ring more than once, Eddie Mafuz was a hell of a guy who passed away from a heart attack in 2005. Ironically Lydia Mafuz, Eddie’s granddaughter told me that he was at the Dr.s office for something routine. Suddenly, he collapsed and passed soon thereafter.

PROMOTER BOB ARUM MAKES “WALL OF SHAME”

ARUM ON “WALL OF SHAME” SECOND TIME WITH PAC

Bob "Always Truthful" Arum

Bob “Always Truthful” Arum

Las Vegas, NVBob Arum is the most powerful man in boxing! As the man behind the Top Rank promotional firm, Arum, a Harvard graduate in the late 1950s, became a United States Attorney under then Attorney General Robert Kennedy. While collecting tax money from a Sonny Liston heavyweight title defense circa 1962, Arum was bitten by the boxing bug. After the assassination of President John Kennedy, Arum felt the need to resign his position with the “G” and became a boxing promoter.

THIS “QUOTE” ON ARUM’S TOMBSTONE!

With Muhammad Ali his first client, Arum has been involved in big fights since the mid 1960s. His most famous quote is, “Yesterday I was lying, but today I’m telling the truth.”

MET WITH & SENT BRIBE MONEY TO LEE

In the mid 1990s, Arum committed a host of Felonies when he admittedly gave then IBF President Bob Lee over $100,000 as a “bribe” to allow George Foreman, then heavyweight champ, to fight Axel Schultz instead of a top contender. He accomplished this by laundering the money through Europe with then booking agent Stan Hoffman. Shortly thereafter, Arum admitted such in a US Dept. of Justice affidavit that was published here at RingTalk.com. The fallout saw Arum fined in a number of states, while unable to promote in Arizona.

JIMMY LESTER AND ANA REMEMBERED

QUICK LOOK BACK IN TIME

Jimmy Lester

Jimmy Lester

San Francisco, CA-I’m sitting here in a somewhat depressed state. The reasons are two-fold. A professional friend of mine for almost 20 years has Cancer spreading through her like fire in a skyscraper, meaning Cancer is jumping from floor to floor. Secondly Jimmy Lester, a San Francisco born prizefighter died here yesterday from a major heart attack. Because Ana Bustamante is not known to you fight fans, let me say that she is one of the most wonderful people I have ever known, and yet another example of bad Karma happening to a truly great person.

JIMMY LESTER DIED LONG AGO!

Although the death certificate will say September 9, 2006, the truth is Jimmy Lester has been all but dead for a few years now. Unable to speak, paralyzed from the waist down, Jimmy died hard. With nicknames like Bay View Bomber and Bay View Blaster as he fought out of SF’s Bay View district.
