ANTONIO MARGARITO TO FIGHT COTTO! SHOULD HE?

June 19th, 2011 By Manny Caballero

Antonio MargaritoCaguas P.R- NO! After what Antonio Margarito (pictured) was caught trying to do vs. Shane Mosley, fight with a ‘plaster of Paris’ blocks already loaded into one hand wrap. A couple of weeks ago the talk was Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0, 30 KOs) or a rematch with Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs). The bout that got the blessing from promoter Bob Arum was Chavez vs. Cotto. He even stated that Jr. would be a better challenge for Cotto rather then Margarito, he even said that Margarito’s trainer Robert Garcia told him that Margarito should retire and that Margarito eye will never be the same after his fight with Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs) seeing Manny broke his orbital socket bone.

THEY GOT CHAVEZ JR. A PAPER TITLE & NOW WANT PIMP HIS NAME!

Well all of a sudden J.C. Chavez Jr. is not the best challenge for Cotto, instead Margarito is, those were Arum’s words. If Cotto accepts the bout will take place in Cotto’s second home Madison Square Garden where he’s 6-0 fighting in the Garden in December. I think Bob saw what all of us boxing aficionados saw in Chavez, nada, “a made up champion,” saying now that the kid wasn’t ready for Cotto. What I don’t understand is how the kid was ready for a belt but not for real opposition?

MARGARITO SHOULD BE BANNED, REGARDLESS OF “BIG” TEXAS MONEY

Instead they gave a man that should not be fighting another big payday. If you ask me, I think it is likely that he used plaster against Cotto and others. I can already hear some of you screaming, “innocent until proven guilty.” The first fight between Margarito vs. Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28KOs) could be another one to look in too, the kid was never the same after that loss. There are video’s running around in YouTube.com where you can see for yourself and be the judge.

ARUM INSISTED COLLINS JR. GET HIS O BACK AFTER THE RESTO FIGHT

Back in June 1983, in the semi-final of the MSG card topped by Roberto Duran’s stoppage of Davey Moore, a punch-less boxer named Luis Resto (20-8-2, 8 KOs) had the padding taken out of his gloves when he fought Billy Collins Jr. (14-0, 11KOs) and Resto destroyed Collins (Check the Ring Talk “Wall of Shame”) He and trainer Carlos “Panama” Lewis The first “Wall of Shame” inductee ended up going to prison and suspended for life from boxing. Panama Lewis has been involved in so much controversy, one we know is the first fight between Alexis Arguello (77-8, 62KOs)vs. Aaron Pryor (39-1, 35KOs) where Lewis gives Pryor, “the special mix” and Pryor came out and destroyed Arguello in the next round.

LEWIS & RESTO ARE EQUAL TO MARGARITO & CAPETILLO

Those two men never again got a chance to fight or train and went to prison. On the other hand Margarito and trainer Javier Capetillo got a slap on wrist. I agree 100% with what trainer Freddie Roach said about the incident, that he does not believe what Margarito says about not knowing what his trainer was doing when he was wrapping his hand. As an ex-fighter. I know that’s bull ****, and according to the circumvented California Penal Code, they should have gotten a charge of intended assault with a deadly weapon.

COTTO BADLY CRAVES REVENGE

I know Cotto want to prove to himself and the fans that he can beat Margachito fair and square. But Cotto is not the same fighter he was when they met the first time, especially after the “catch weight” smashing at the hands of Pacquiao. Miguel, he left a little of himself in the ring both times and it’ll be hard for him, maybe impossible to be same fighter he was when they first fought. The Puerto Rican WBA 154 lb. champ has more to lose than “The Cheat.” So I hope Cotto doesn’t give him a chance, as there are better fish for him to fry.

  2. About 88 of the 92 titleholders out there are paper champions. And when doesn’t a promoter pimp a fighter’s name?

  3. margaCHEATo should have immediately & permanantly banned from the sport. I believe with every fiber in my body that he used that against cotto. You gonna tell me that it was the first & only time he used the plaster? Yeah, ok! He could have caused not only serious damage but even could have killed somebody. Why would you let a lowlife like that back in. He degraded the sport. I say don’t give him the payday. screw him!

  4. I hope Cotto busts Margaritos ass right into retirement.

  5. i would love to see chavez jr fight cotto. chavez jr would be exposed for just what he really is, a “paper champion” and a bag of hot air. surely he’ll be beaten black and blue once he fight someone of cotto’s caliber.

  6. Margarito vs Cotto is a more watchable fight than any of the Floyd Mayweathers past fights, because these two will come to fight not run and box, run and box. This is a fight im look forward to. Fighting not running around then hug, running around then hug. Got it?

  7. >>>he even said that Margarito’s trainer Robert Garcia told him that Margarito should retire and that Margarito eye will never be the same after his fight with Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs) seeing Manny broke his orbital socket bone.

Why the H*ll didn’t Garcia and corner STOP the Margarito fight in the tenth round at the latest? They’re partially responsible for the damage inflicted upon Margarito. Had they stopped in then, Margarito might not have had the orbital fracture. Heck, Pacquiao even held up a bit in 11th.

Both Margarito and Cotto took beatings–both took beatings against Pacquiao and Shane gave a beating to Margarito and he to Cotto. Hard to say who took the worst beatings but Cotto seems to have more left.

I thought Chavez Jr showed a good body attack in his “title” fight, but much of what looked good about him was that he just looked so big and strong, almost as if he was 20 pounds bigger than the German title holder. Wait a minute , he WAS 20 pounds bigger.

  8. im sick of this stuff calling fighters “not the same fighter he once was” after a loss, that unfair to be judged like that. even to that might hold true in some circumstances, that doesn’t apply to everybody who’s been beat-up! and cotto is still cotto, margarito is still margarito

  9. Margacheato is still going to beat Cotto. I say he should take a lie detector and he should be asked if he knew about it in the Mosley fight, and if he has used them before.
If he knew or used them before, kicked out of boxing for life. But that is not going to happen, he has his license back, end of story.

Hope Cotto tunes him, but it’s not going to happen.

  10. IF NEW YORK ALLOWS THIS THEN PANAMA LEWIS SHOULD SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE COMMISSION BUT ALL HE WILL GET FOR IT IS ANOTHER FIXED TRIAL EVERYBODY IN NY KNOWS IT WASNT PANAMA WHO CUT THE GLOVES ,AND RESTO DID NOT HAVE A BRICK IN HIS GLOVES WHICH IS WHAT MARGARITO HAD

  11. With a target mark on Margarito’s face, what could go wrong with Cotto?
Besides it can correct the feelings between the two.If Cotto wins, he will be vindicated, justice is served However ,if Margarito defeated Cotto,a closed chapter was produced and finally a moving on.

  12. Cotto will beat the hell out of margarito and chavez!

  13. I think that Cotto has every right to go in the ring with margarito and get his revenge!!! Cotto may not be the same fighter, but neither is Margarito. He is physically done, due to the hands of pacqiao!! Secondly, without the illegal substances in his gloves, he has never been the same fighter so this fight is interesting on all levels!! I think Steward will have Cotto well prepared for this fight, and he will be very hungry for it!! Cotto will be in top shape, and it should be a win for him via ko by the 11th round. Margarito’s career will be over, and it will push for Cotto to get a great payday against another top elite fighter!! Does margarito deserve to be in the ring and earn another payday, NO!! Does Cotto deserve his revenge, and another great fight in his future, without a doubt!!! Cotto has been a true warrior, and given us many great and entertaining fights, and has never ducked anyone, so we as boxing fans should be behind Cotto 100% for this fight against Margarito!!!

  14. I agree with Gerard in the old days they would get smashed and take a couple fight. Be back better than ever. Look at Louis when schmeling busted his azz?? And many more. It’s the media that doesn’t let a guy get over a loss. He loses 2 fights in a row and he’s done???

  15. the fight is okay. but this time, i think cotto will win.. the beating antonio took is horrible as compared to cotto’s…

  16. I agree with you a 100%. You gotta be totally ignorant or naive to think that he would use plaster of paris for Mosley, a fight Margocheato was expected to win because of Mosley’s last performances and age, and not use it with Cotto who at the time was an undeafeated, top five P4P with the championship Margarito so badly wanted. With the adrenaline rushing Cotto won the first half of the fight, but then he must’ve started feeling the hammerlike punches that eventually messed up his face and body. Cotto was never the same after that and never will be. Just take a look at the way his face ended up. And still you gotta give Cotto a lot of credit because up to the point were he quitted he was close to winning the fight. Although, Margarito was beaten badly by Pacquiao I still feel that Cotto is the more damaged fighter and in a rematch I’m not sure Cotto would win. This is one situation in which the cheater ends up making a lot of money fights and never gets penalized for what I believed and should be a f-cking crime.

  18. so your telling me honestly that steroids don’t cause the same injustice. what damage can that cause we know of Mosley using with balco . why don’t we have Manny take a lie detector test to prove he hasn’t been using . that is unfair to say. let him let him prove himself like they say the ring never lies everything shows up there if he cheated in the past he would be exposed as a cheater. let them decide i think also Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is living off his fathers name and is a bullshit champ. so again i would love to see a slug fest between Margarito and Miguel Cotto. let them decide what is best for them i would pay pay per view money for this so hopefully arum does not let us down with pushing a Chavez Cotto fight. Cotto would win hands down . but again if they ban Margarito then they should ban Mosley and James Toney and many others i think we should be fair. every one deserves a chance

  19. The reality is, no one except Capetillo and Margarito know if they have used loaded gloves before the Mosley incident. Everything else is just speculation.

That said, attempting to get an edge by illegal means, is wrong. Margarito served his time, and as a result, has an asterisk by his name when it comes to his career accomplishments. I think that hurts him more than any fine or suspension.

If Cotto wants the fight, as I’m sure he does, then let them fight. As long as they are both medically cleared to fight, there should be no outcry against this match.

  20. Rito fights Cotto and Rito again will earn big cake which is what most seem to be against. But to see Rito get another beating seems to be the trade off. Rito and Cotto would be a brutal fight again. Cotto maintained his skills and technique despite the beatings he took and Rito still fights in the same fashion which will always trouble Cotto. Rito has diminished greatly though looking back at his fights with Lujan and Diaz. Rito fought twelve rounds with a sense of urgency throughout and the ability to absorb punishment. But Rito might not have much left in the tank after the Pacman torture. Intriguing match up again.

  21. Mosley was not speculation james Toney wasnt either . Mosley admitted to the use of steroids under oath. he used them during the first and second fight with Oscar Delahoya. so what then why don’t we have doubt next to his win againts Oscar. James Toney tested positive also nothing is speculation on those 2. so lets be real on this one. but you didnt see them banned from the sport. you don’t hear anyone crying over that. not even oscar cried about it. so again let them fight. you know it would be a great fight to see. i don’t know how people think Margarito does not have much in the tank when he hasn’t fought since last year lets make a judgment when he fights again.

  23. I DONT THINK MARGARITO’S FACE IS GOING TO HOLD UP IN THIS REMATCH. COTTO WILL MOST LIKELY PUT HIM OUT OF BOXING AFTER THIS ONE.
