ALEXIS ARGUELLO AND SUGAR RAY ROBINSON
ALEXIS ARGUELLO AND SUGAR RAY ROBINSON “GREAT FIGHTERS” FROM DIFFERENT ERAS
San Francisco, CA– The picture you see here was taken in either the late 60s or early 70s, the great Alexis Arguello and the man who a lot of people feel was the greatest ever, “Sugar Ray” Robinson. By now Robinson had retired with his last bout being in 1964. Arguello on the other hand, Alexis looks about 22 or 23 years old. Having spent time with both men, albeit briefly with Robinson in 1984, and a week in Nicaragua trying to coax the late featherweight (126 lb.), super featherweight (130) and lightweight (135) champion into a drug rehabilitation program some 13 or so years ago, these were not only great boxers, they were great men.
NEVER TALKED ABOUT DEATH OF ALEXIS ARGUELLO
And even though Alexis appeared on “Ring Talk Radio” in 1999 and stated that he wanted to die, I could not believe that he committed suicide just a couple of years away from being elected President of his native Nicaragua. Already the Mayor of the country’s capital, Managua, I talked with Arguello couple of months before he is alleged to have shot himself. In our 20+ years of knowing each other, it appeared that with his drug issues behind him that Arguello had beaten all of his demons. Therefore what was ruled a suicide by Nicaraguan authorities, I feel was instead a political murder. A coup de etat prior to Alexis becoming president.
