MANNY PACQUIAO: THE RISKS, LEGACY, & REWARDS!

July 23rd, 2009 By Jarrad Woods

New York, NY- One reason Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) is considered the consensus number one ‘pound for pound’ boxer is because of the general doubt experts had that he would conquer recent opponents. Not only did he prove his doubters wrong, but he emphatically proved them wrong, leaving no question that he was the better man on fight night. In the fall (November 14), Pac will now officially take on likely his toughest task to date in Miguel Cotto (34-1 27 KOs). Pac a former lightweight (135 lbs) titlist three fights removed will face Cotto not at the welterweight limit of 147, but at 145 lbs. Pac’s critics think he’s bitten off more than he can chew, but his fan’s think he’ll once again elevate his campaign to become unquestionably the best fighter on the planet. One thing is for certain, Pac versus Cotto should be a great fight and no one should doubt Pac’s ability to win and win big.

WHY INSURANCE COMPANIES SPEND $1.4 MILLION A DAY?

July 23rd, 2009 By RingTalk

San Francisco, CA- I have an HMO (Heath Maintenance Organization) that my employer pays about $450 a month for. With co-pays, it’s about $20 bucks to visit my personal physician. When I was self employed, I paid about $6,000 a year for what my job pays for now. The question I ask of you, not the sports fan, but the average American, why are insurance companies flooding the TV & radio airwaves daily with $1.4 million worth of ads knocking the President’s Health Care program? And yet at the same time, 14,000 people a day in the US are losing their health care.

US DOCTORS ARE TOPS BUT OUR CARE IS RANKED #18 OR 37! READ MORE…

GATTI’S BROTHER & MANAGER SAY “NO SUICIDE”

July 23rd, 2009 By RingTalk

TAKEN FROM TRENTON NEWS

Trenton, NJ-There’s no way his younger brother committed suicide, Joe Gatti, the older brother of Jersey City boxing legend Arturo Gatti said this week. “Are they kidding me?” said Joe Gatti, brushing aside an autopsy report that stated Arturo Gatti was found at a Brazilian resort on July 11 “suspended and hanged, indicating he may have committed suicide.”

“Everything points to her (Amanda Rodrigues Gatti),” said Joe Gatti, referring to Arturo’s wife. “No doubt they’re trying to get her off.” Initially police believed Rodrigues, 23, strangled Arturo Gatti, who was asleep from a hangover, with her purse strap. Gatti’s manager Pat Lynch also rejects the suicide theory. READ MORE…

Brockton, MA- The clash between Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) is set to take place on September 19th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The quotations are there because of the numerous cancellations and postponements of fights recently, including this one. BARNETT OUT: BELFORT TO FACE FEDOR SATURDAY!

July 22nd, 2009 By Matthew Grizzle

FEDOR HAS “EASY” MATCH IN STORE?

Los Angeles, CA- It looks as if Josh Barnett (24-5, 5 KOs, 15 SUBs) will not be able to gain a license in California to fight Fedor Emeilenenko (30-1, 7 KOs, 16 SUBs) at Affliction: Trilogy.  Apparently the California State Athletic Commission refused to license Barnett due to a positive drug test on a preflight exam.  Vitor Belfort (18-8, 12 KOs, 2 SUBs); who last fought at 185, will look to step in to fight the heavyweight king.  All props to Belfort, but he is likely to be crushed like a grape!

ARTURO GATTI WORTHY OF HALL OF FAME

July 21st, 2009 By Pedro Fernandez

San Francisco, CA- Although emotion is in the air seeing his funeral was yesterday, there has been a lot of talk about Arturo Gatti’s place in history.  In other words, are Gatti’s accomplishments worthy of the hall of fame?  Without any doubt!  Although he held two alphabetical titles, gatti ward 1 picGatti’s career was a stellar one.

GATTI ACCOMPLISHED MORE THAN TITLES

In addition to being in four Ring magazine fights of the year, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2003, Arturo had many bright ring moments since he turned professional in 1991.  Beating Pete Taliaferro (25-2) in 1994 brought Gatti much notice.  The 12 round win over then IBF 130 lb. champ Tracy Harris Patterson (54-3-1) in 1995 wasn’t scintillating, but it gave Gatti a belt late promoter Dan Duva could move around the boxing chessboard.

WILSON RODRIGUEZ WAS BEATING GATTI UNTIL…

In his initial defense, Gatti scored a come from behind one-punch KO of Wilson Rodriguez (44-7) in round six.  After getting dropped and sporting a closing right optic, this was the first time boxing fans in masse witnessed a bloodied Gatti roar back READ MORE…

ARTURO GATTI BURIED TODAY

July 20th, 2009 By Pedro Fernandez

Montreal, Canada- Having dealt with death more often than I’d like to admit, it takes me a while to emotionally react to it.  Gatti FuneralThis may have a lot to do with the training one receives in a California Police Officers Standards & Training (POST) law enforcement academy.   If the training achieves its goal, you react to death or mayhem in a calm professional manner.  It’s later, maybe that night when you’re driving home, that you realize somebody died, a human life had  ended.

LAST MODE OF TRANSIT HAUNTING

That being said, I didn’t feel a wave of emotion come over me until I saw photos of Arturo Gatti’s funeral procession.  The finality of death, the picture of Gatti’s hearse nearly broke me down.  And while his wife, the only suspect in Gatti’s death, Amanda R. Gatti sits in a Brazilian jail, his family, friends, and fans remember the 37-year old father of two as a decent human being.

However Vazquez overcame a first round knockdown and dominated the Colombian Prescott from the third round on. When a split decision was announced a worried Vazquez held his breath. ARUM: PAC-COTTO TO FIGHT AT 145

July 20th, 2009 By RingTalk

Las Vegas, NV- The Miguel Cotto-Manny Pacquiao fight is set for 145 lbs. on November 14, as predicted here a month ago. Pac, 47-3-2, 37 KOs, a Filipino phenomenon, will meet Puerto Rico’s Cotto (31-1, 27 KOs).  At this weight, I think Manny’s in water deep enough to where he will have difficulty staying afloat for 36 minutes.

WILL WEIGHT & SIZE FINALLY BEAT PACMAN?

STORY OF A STREET FIGHT WITH ARTURO GATTI

July 18th, 2009 By Jarrad Woods

GATTI HAD BALLS BOTH IN & OUT OF RING

New York, NY- A 6’5” Los Angeles based talk show host named Tariq “King Flex” Nasheed recently made mention of a physical encounter he had with the late Arturo Gatti.  Gatti was only 5’7” but apparently was not diminutive in heart as he picked a fight with the much larger Nasheed.  Nasheed, known for writing relationship themed self help books like, The Art Of Mackin, hosts a weekly podcast and revisited an encounter he had with Gatti about eight years ago.  The story was both entertaining and telling as he described an incident that detailed the type of man Gatti was outside of the ring.

ARTURO GATTI BEING…..ARTURO GATTI

According to the story Tariq was visiting a “posh” hotel with a few female companions in the Los Angeles area and heard loud music coming from one of the rooms.  He noticed what he described as a “short Puerto Rican dude” (Gatti obviously is Italian) in the hotel and was surprised to see someone like him at a five star hotel.  He recalls that Gatti showed some interest in a few of his female companions READ MORE…

NEWS ICON WALTER CRONKITE DEAD AT 92

July 17th, 2009 By RingTalk

CRONKITE WAS MOST TRUSTED MAN IN AMERICA

New York, NY- The life of all great men are celebrated at their death.  That being said, let us that knew him rejoice in the fact that Walter Cronkite, host of the CBS evening news from 1962 to 1981, was a man of character and substance.  At first, Cronkite bit into the poison apple that was Vietnam.  But in 1967, Walter had seen enough and soon thereafter was questioning the war.  This prompted then President Lyndon Johnson to declare, “If I’ve lost the trust of Cronkite, I’ve lost the trust of the nation.”  Soon thereafter, Johnson decided he would not seek reelection in 1968.  What was so memorable to me was when Cronkite would end his nightly broadcast during the Vietnam era by saying, “32 Americans died today in southeast Asia, bringing the American death toll to…”  In the end the number exceeded 58,000 Americans.

WALTER CHOKED WHEN HE TOLD OF JFK’S DEATH

One of the most gut-wrenching times in American history was watching Walter announce the death of President John F. Kennedy on live TV November 22, 1963.  At first, like with Vietnam, Walter was a team player.  But once the compelling evidence came forth that Lee Harvey Oswald was the fall guy for the president’s public execution, Walter changed directions on the JFK assassination.   In closing, Walter Cronkite will probably go down as the best national TV news anchor in history.
